You just hit the nail on the head, accountability. The reason these types gravitate towards government employment is because there is no accountability. Most have no useful skills or talents, so they need a job where that doesn't matter. Allegiance to the party is all that is required.

( and we're talking 2-3 jobs a year). When he hit his mid-forties, he realized is future was looking pretty bleak. So what did he do? He went to work in a civil service job precisely because he knew civil servants seldom gets fired. It is beyond frustrating, and unacceptable. There need to be some sweeping changes in our government. And I’m afraid the only way for that to be accomplished will be by war or coup. How sad for America. How sad for the futures of our children.

First of all, thank you Senator Cotton for your clear and direct questions. Even better, you knowing the answers to the questions you asked. Having read the responses of other people to this hearing, I think I agree with them. How is it possible for the Director of Prisons to be so unprepared for this hearing? Senators are supposed to ask questions and have a dialogue with the witness to make good, sound decisions, recommendations, or what else to maximum benefit or our tax dollars. I have to agree with others in this post, government needs to change, with accountability, clarity, responsible and responsive of all directors or leaders of any bureau or department. God bless America.

When I worked for the BOP, a regional director’s visit was a dog and pony show. Everything was brushed up to look perfect. There were accounts, at some facilities, of snow being covered with flower and bushes being sprayed with food coloring. A visit from the director must be a nightmare.
A trick the “leaf eaters” (administrators or folks with no inside prison experience) play to get hazardous duty retirement, is to come from their cushy regional or central offices to work in a prison for three years, then return to their administrative jobs.
Former Assistant Director, Peter Carlson believed (with some legitimate exceptions) that all BOP administrative staff should be correctional officers for at least one year before getting promoted to any other position.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:16 📆 Delays in providing responses to the committee's written questions are attributed to an ongoing review process with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
00:45 🤔 The term "Justice-involved individuals" is used instead of "criminals and victims" to be more encompassing but raises questions about clarity and semantics.
02:48 📊 The prison system is struggling to meet the mandated 90% time allocation for employees to focus on their primary responsibilities, indicating staffing issues.
04:22 ❓ Lack of precise data on the number of employed correctional officers suggests poor oversight and record-keeping.
05:58 🛠️ The prison system needs to prioritize recruiting and hiring core staff (correctional officers) over support and headquarters personnel.
