    Ford Cruise O Matic Transmission
    Ford-O-Matic was the first automatic transmission widely used by Ford Motor Company.[2] It was designed by the Warner Gear division of Borg Warner Corporation and introduced in 1951 model year cars. In contrast to Detroit Gear Division's three band automatic originally designed for Studebaker which became superseded by this unit, a variation of Warner Gear's three-speed unit named Ford-O-Matic continued to evolve later into Cruise-O-Matic named transmissions in 1958 and finally the FMX[3] named transmissions in 1968. This line continued in production until 1980, when the AOD was introduced. Like Ford, variations of this same Borg Warner design were used by other automobile manufacturers as well, such as AMC, International Harvester, Studebaker, Volvo and Jaguar, each of them having the necessary unique adaptations required for the individual applications.

    Apparently the "historians" on this channel have an issue with what constitutes a '58 Ford and a '59 Ford. Showing a '59 and titling it '58 Ford ad. They did same thing on another posting.

    So was it a 2 or 3 speed automatic?

    • @g0989
      @g0989 2 года назад +7

      Cruise-O-Matic had 3 forward speeds. In later years, the selector quadrant read: P-R-N-D-2-1.

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 2 года назад +4

      "Cruise-O-Matic" was a 3 speed, "Ford-O-Matic" was a 2 speed. at 0:06 you can see the selector for the 3 forward gears.

    • @Al-thecarhistorian
      @Al-thecarhistorian 2 года назад +4

      A fully three speed automatic. D1 shifted automatically from 1 to 2 to 3. Always started off in low gear 1. If selector put in D2, low or 1st gear was by-passed. You started out in 2nd gear. Great for slippery surfaces, such as on ice or snow.

      @@jamesslick4790 A lot of people think Ford-O-Matic was a 2 speed trans. That's only partly true. The selector for Ford-O-Matic only ever offered D & L positions for forward driving. HOWEVER, the original 1st generation trannys had 3 forward gears. "D" position, used for all "normal" driving gave only 2nd gear starts equivalent to the D2 position mentioned in the video. The only way to start in 1st with the early transmissions was to manually select L & bump the lever up to D for the upshift. THEN if you actually wanted to wind out 2nd to the max you would shift BACK TO L because over about 30/40 mph (depending on engine & axle ratio) the trans would not revert to 1st gear but would hold 2nd until returned again to "D". That was how you did a fast take off with an early Ford automatic. I believe these transmissions were offered until 1958 with the "6s" & smaller V8s. The Cruise-O-Matic was "beefier" & was offered with larger engines. (It would have been a derivative of what I believe was referred to as "Multi-Drive" used in the heavier & more powerful Lincolns in, I think, 1956. Previously FMC had been buying Hydra-Matics from GM for the Lincolns because the Ford/Mercury trans was more a "light-duty" unit.)
      In 1959, pre-dating the Ford Falcon by 1yr but evidently in preparation for it, the 2nd generation Ford-O-Matic was introduced as a new light weight, light/medium duty, simplified, low-cost, aluminium case 2 speed automatic. That transmission was then the only automatic offered in the "full-size" 6 cyl cars for several years. Most of the smaller V8 big cars could be had with either trans while Falcon & mid-size Fairlanes as well as Merc Comet & Meteor were pretty much all 2 Spd until '64/'65 when there was a new light/medium duty 3 speed Cruise-O-Matic, just in time for the arrival of the Mustang. AFTER '64, Ford was all 3 Spd till the later arrival of the AOD 4speed.

      @@jamesslick4790 Fordomatic was also a 3 speed, but unlike the Cruise o matic where you could Access first in *D2* You can only get first in a Fordomatic by having it in Low gear, or by flooring it all the way from a dead stop. I have a '57 Ford skyliner with the fordomatic, its a wonderful transmission. I think Ford had a leg up on Chevy at that time vs the Powerglide, which really was a 2 speed. I've driven that thing and its a dog by comparison. There was an actual 2 speed Fordomatic, that I believe came out in '58 I believe, but that was meant to be a cheaper economy automatic, and was inferior to the Cruise O Matic. I think that's where the Fordomatic 2 speed misconseption comes from. The pre '58 Fordomatic has 3 gears.

    No one can say that marketing wasn't on the ball here. There are still people today with new cars that still have little clue about how to drive an "automatic" transmission. The cruise-o-matic was option for both Y and FE blocks. The commercial is about drive train components, I'm not terribly sure just why it invites so much criticism. Its a flipping info-mercial knob heads. Lol...
