David Draiman went through a divorce last year that was, by all accounts, very painful for him. I suspect that he feels this song very deeply. As for Ann Wilson, she is a marvel who has always had the ability to live in the song. Both of their voices are so strong and powerful. I can't help but feel the emotion, painful though it is, in this song.

The song was actually conceived by the guitarist Dan about his and the drummer Mike's divorces that happened back towards the beginning of the pandemic. Dan wrote the music and he and Dave co-wrote the lyrics. David's divorce didn't happen until after, but I suspect it's still quite deeply personal to him too as you said. How could it not be?

During the 4 years they recorded Divisive, two of the band members' marriages broke down. Drummer Mike Wengren got divorced early in the pandemic and guitarist Dan Donegan went through a split in early 2022.
This song is about a disintegrating relationship where each party struggles with letting go. It was inspired by the ending of Donegan's marriage.
"That was a really personal one for me," Dan Donegan told Billboard. "During COVID-19, I was going through a divorce after 18 years of marriage. Part of that divorce process is that there was still a great deal of love we have for each other, and we couldn't imagine our lives without each other. Just that letting go, letting somebody go that you still love, but maybe the marriage just might not be working anymore... It was touching on that. It was just very personal."
Donegan came up with the concept, then wrote the lyrics with Disturbed singer David Draiman. "I threw a few lines at him, and he took the ball and ran with it." Donegan said. Then Feb 2023 David Draimen also got divorced.

Great analysis of a very cool song and collaboration. Ann Wilson is the greatest female hard rock singer of our time, but her band Heart had it's commercial peak from the late 70s through their breakup in the mid 90s so most people under 40 aren't as familiar with them. This song is about Dan's divorce and the video symbolism really adds a lot to the song. David (lead singer) also went through a divorce shortly after Dan so it's emotional for both of them. According to American Top 40 Heart's song "Barracuda" was the first metal song with a female vocalist to make the Top 40 back in the 70s. If you're interested in hearing how incredible her vocals are check out "Barracuda" and/or the power ballad "Alone" which was later in their career.

If you would like a treat, check out Disturbed's live version with Moriah Formica, who's band Plush is amazing and their cover of Heart's Barracuda got David Draimans attention and he asked Plush to open on tour with them so they could perform this live

This song was actually inspired by his guitarist Dan who got a divorce a few years back then David himself divorced early last year. He then also linked his divorce to this song.

“We love them to death, but they’re no good for us…”
I’m not sure where your music tastes and experience lies, but if you’ve never heard it, check out Kenny Chesney Come Over. It’s that exact theme.
On a different theme, try Travis Meadows. It’s all about self reflection and repair. Chesney did a great cover, but Travis is the songwriter and his version is more stripped down and comes from the heart.
    Cheers!
