Many have tried and a lot have failed on this track but West brings his own flavor to it. 6 years later it’s still timeless and a classic. Thank you my brother west for keeping the movement going. We drummers and I love music.
A mew level of excellence in meter regulation, always in the one but never out of the mix. One of the best drummers I've seen in quite a few years. Keep reaching for those heights Wes you're almost there. You'll know when it's at your grasp. You da man!
wes, you got it. its been long time since the last time i discover a good drummer like you. hugs from spain. hope to get news really soon of you. good work, well done, thanx
I really like how he just does whatever he wants. He not doing it the way spanky did or nun of that. He just killing it in his own style. surprised this dude ain't blown up yet.
Hello friend, i saw your video and I loved it ... My bro congratulations !! my brother I'm from Brazil and I particularly admire these lines of 'chops gospel' and one thing that I admire is the sound of 'snare' could you give me some tips on how to make this pitch! Thank you! strong google translator sorry for the mistakes
That's what's up bro!! Nice all around. You got your on style for sure. Man dem drums sound so good you could have did everything wrong and it would have still been right!! What you record with?
Dude is bananas. The only thing i don't like is the typical gospel phrasing he has. I hope its not intentional. Mad props for his skill set though cause homeboy is ridiculous.
Jessit Tunales the triplet or semi-triplet based mixed with Chris Dave-ish stylised licks. I understand its popular and have even heard it called the "new" style(although its been around since the mid-eighties) but its done a lot especially by black drummers. And i live in ATL(the belt buckle of the bible belt) so that's all you hear down here and its because thats all a lotta cats listen to. This dude is a little different, though. I've seen his other videos and I hear Chris Dave and gospel phrasing but he puts his own twist to it. A lotta cats that are seen as the hot drummers are playing the same triplet based gospel licks. Like, if you close you eyes they'd all sound the same. That's why certain music schools (Drummers Collective in NYC for example) won't even let you send a video as an audition. It has to be audio because you can get fooled into not hearing whether the guys actually doing anything impressive if your watching a video. And this isn't coming from a place of hating because I'm no slouch on the drums myself, its just the experience of have been playing since i was 3 years old and seen, done and learned a lot.
well, it starts with what you listen to. you will never play beyond what you've heard. the more different music you listen to the wider the range of places to pull from to obtain musical ideas. wow, as i'm writing this i'm hearing this guy and not looking at the screen and noticing how he rushes the pulse sometimes but thats neither here nor there. also. learn and listen to stuff you specifically don't like. a really sick drum friend of mine(Dana Hawkins, look him up. he's a beast) once told me that music is like food, the food that you like more likely then not isn't very good for you but the food you hate(like vegetables) is the music that is really good for you musical tastes and abilities. all in all. just try to be as different as possible. youm don't want people saying ...."hey you sound like(fill in the blank) drummer".
marc777danielle Thanks I appreciate it. Honestly speaking I dont really listen or play gospel music. More CCM than anything. A lot things I work on I try to stay all the way away from "gospel Phrasing". So if your hearing that then best believe thats the last thing I want. Not that there is anything wrong with that to each its own. I try to create my own sound. Of course I listen to different drummers Mark Colenburg, Chris Daddy Dave, Tony Royster, Buddy Rich, JoJo Mayor, and a list of others. But I try my best not to sound like a lot of cats out here with the same phrases. A lot of my videos I try to do different things ya dig. But again I appreciate the compliment man and your honesty
marc777danielle People like Wes Watkins, Spanky, Calvin Rodgers ect dont play typical gospel chops. They take rudiments and transform them. Check out the shed sessions video with Wes. That will blow your mind.

What do you mean by " gospel phrasing"
