ICEBERG PHOTOGRAPHY!

- Without a doubt, East Greenland is the best place I've ever been to take photos. The light is incredible, the landscapes are unlike anything I've ever seen, and it's often so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I took 7000 photos in one day.
In this episode I worry about polar bears, eat whale and walk on icebergs. It was a good day.

It's all downhill from here...
I highly doubt that!
Something you should know about sharks. Despite their bad press, they don't kill many people. Get the stats from Google.
Greenland!! 👌
Came for the photography, stayed for the personality 👌🏻
Thanks for sticking around :)
At this point we are calling it "the Popsys trap".
And you didn't see Emily. Oh boy.
Don't worry about the polar bears, they're only slightly larger sheep ;)
haha!
Love your exposures so well controlled by not underexposing to keep those beautiful muted colours. How quiet. We need quiet! Great, James.
Cheers Gary!
The best photography spot is the street in front of my apartment. Many cute dogs pass by.
That sounds awesome 🙂
Your overhead photo of yourself lying down on the iceberg-what a treasure! This adventure looks incredible and I wish I was there!
Cheers mate, it was amazing! I want to go back already!
01:54 the wooden steps your companion was standing on, that caught my eye and something I would have taken a few photo of, something man made next to a ton of nature. cool video I love seeing how all your shots came to be it really completes the story behind many of your photos. I really need to start doing the same
As ever your own style makes for great watching...looks Amazing!
Cheers Philip!
Loved this video.....Greenland is going onto our bucket list.......Thx
Great to hear Tony!
Love the photo at 8:40, man. Looks like a printed photo in a picture frame hanging on the wall. Amazing views outside the window!
hi James. enjoy yr videos. thirty years ago I spent 6 months in nuuk Greenland playing in a band in a nightclub. since then I have travelled and played all over the world, but nothing has come close to the experience of those times in Greenland. truly a special place. and the people are as special as the place itself. interestingly it hasn't got any easier to get to has it. we flew London to Copenhagen, Copenhagen to sonde stromfjord, then prop plane to nuuk. on the way back of went nuuk to baffin island prop plane, baffin island to Montreal, then Montreal to new York.
Wow, what an adventure! And yes sounds like the flights are just as chaotic :)
That's awesome! Great vlog James
Thanks so much :)
"How did you get here?"
"Just floated in on an iceberg, why?"
haha!
Going to become the landscape photographer vlogger... becomes Thomas Heaton 😂😂 Great video, Would love to go to Greenland someday!
Cheers mate, haha!
Love the iceberg selfie! I think they are now called “Advanced selfies” 😄
“Landscape vlogger James” is a legend. You should bring him back more often...
Wow what a place, great video James!!!! Absolutely amazing!!!👍🏻 thanks for sharing.👍🏻
Thanks Mark! :)
Great video, James! Stunning location. I thought it was hilarious that talk about not worrying about a polar bear while one is clearly in your background! So funny. So you!
😨😨😨
Yes, how didn't you guys saw it, it was there when you walked at night, you can see it in the background, it was just starting at you guys!
@@MichaelTapel It wasn't staring at them, it was Vlogging.
Incredible James! Where can I find your photos from your trip there? Ohhhhhhh.. . Duh... expand to get the links!
Went to South Georgia once due to my job, the old abandoned mining communities there Leith, Stromness filled with wildlife mainly seals and penguins was my favourite place on earth. Definely something to do with the ice and light.
The algorithm has hidden your vids from me the past couple months despite being subscribed - a shame because this is pretty epic.
Thanks mate, that's really interesting and I'm finding the same thing with my subscriptions. So annoying! I make sure I tick that bell thing but you shouldn't have to if you sub.. Annoying!
Great video! Loving this series from you!
Can you share some tips for catching amazing aurora shots like the ones you did here? I'm really struggling to nail them just right!
That's a good idea! I'm no expert but a one second exposure, bright aperture and iso 1600 or so did the trick for me :)
i love this video so much :) the colors, the photos, the place, everything!
Thanks Andrea :)
James, try whistling at the northern lights if you are ever lucky enough to experience them again!
I've heard of this!! i will :)
I flew over Greenland years ago and it looked amazing and a little intimidating in it's remoteness. That's as close as I have got, one day...
Fantastic vid, been looking forward to seeing more and it didn’t disappoint. So jealous it hurts but hey, the rainy Kent countryside is basically as beautiful so I’m not complaining 🤔🤔🤔
Thanks Andy! I'm jealous of myself that I'm not there anymore :)
James Popsys ha! You’ve had an incredible few weeks, hard to keep that level of excitement up, I’ll bet there’s something around the corner though 👌🏼
Stunning photo's and drone footage again, WOW!
Thanks mate!
I don't really care if there are no roads or something. I have to get my a$$ there some day. Thank you so far for a lovely perspective the a massive island (belonging to Denmark, that's probably why you can reach the capital from there). Excited for the next part.
Thanks mate, yeah it's really worth the effort!
Canada is about to do a take over of Greenland.. hurting our tourism in the north... on a serious note, it is very similar to Canada for landscape and nature, one day I will make it there...maybe by boat since I'm not that far...I'm in Newfoundland..
Looks awesome
Cheers Brian :)
I'd love to stay in a hut where the windows look like paintings :O
It was amazing! 🙂
I want to go! I am close to Denmark so seems to make it easy
Well worth a trip Andrew :)
Love to camp out on one of those Icebergs⛺ You should do more landscape photography, it was the best part of this video🙃
Thanks :)
TRIPOD ???? the things people do for their art.... ;) Lovely video !
haha!
Greenland looks amazing! Good job with the photos and drone footage.
One note though. You got probabilities backwards in your head. Lets say you have to go swimming in a certain place a million times before you get bitten by shark. That means that every time you go swimming in that place, you are getting closer to that million times, meaning that your probability of getting bit increases the more times you go swimming there. But don't worry, it will be very cool way to go when you finally get eaten ;D
Wow 👍
You're more likely to be stung by a Box Jellyfish if you go swimming in the sea around Australia (apparently..I've never actually been to Australia! LOL)
Yeah like BEEEG spiders! (Fortunately they don't scare me!) Although some Australian spiders apparently hide under toilet seats?! What's that all about??
Cool images! What microphone do you use?
Thanks - A Rode videomic :)
Wonderful work my friend.
Going to share your beautiful work. Well done. 👍😊👍
Thanks Sir, was such a pleasure to share the time with you!
Pretty good heaton impersonation !
Watching you on that ice float, I couldn't help thinking about killer whales and seals that hang out on them! :D
Enjoyed your travel log.
Pleased to report I didn't seem to bother any of them! Thanks for watching :)
Standing on an iceberg! Now you know how polar bears feel. lol
Big time!
I hope you got a shot with the composition at 11:19 or 11:20. it looks epic. thanks for sharing
I like your editing skills, tells a story and it's interesting, also some really good photos especially the one at 3:38 it would be nice if you mention how long that exposure was and what gear did you used, just curiosity, so amazing vlog overall one of (if not the) best you ever made ;-)
Thanks so much, about a second I reckon, G9 at f2.8 and 1600 :)
Love it!
Thanks my man! And thanks for the expert drone shots!
Sold me. Mission accomplished.
Great to hear Larry!
Possibly one of your best videos,,, Love the location and the commentary,, thanks again James :)
Thanks so much Ian! 🙂
Hi mate bit late in viewing your video ,I have a name for your iceberg kingdom Popsicle sorry couldn’t help myself.
👍
haha!
Haha it‘s great to see you enjoying this place so much.
Greenland is definitely on top of my list, now I‘m just waiting for someone to invite me over so I can afford going there haha
Ahh mate it's definitely worth the cost. Phenomenal place!
James Popsys One day for sure!
Wow there are some awesome videos and pictures here! I would love to go there, but I am guessing its not cheap - can you put up some links to help us organise a visit?
Not cheap at all David, but well worth saving hard for! I'll try to find some links :)
How expensive is east Greenland on a daily basis? Food transportation etc.
Really tough to say as it depends on lots of things, but a fair bit more than your average destination at this point!
How about compared to Iceland or Scotland? Thanks for the information! I've wanted to visit Greenland for a long time, and I might go next year!
You did find it a more beautiful place then New-Zealand? To me it all looks a bit the same (white/ greyish). It must be cool to be at such a remote place, but the most beautiful?
Did you have your Polar beer? Amazing (I know...it's tedious) stuff man! That iceberg selfie? Masterpiece... Let me check it on your IG... I want to see it in large
Congrats
Thanks mate :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto you're welcome (thank you!)... you didn't answer... I think you technically had a polar beer... :)
Great video as ever. I love my g80. Think it’s a great camera, for stills as well. Don’t agree with the slaughter of whales tho, but it is their way of life tho. Thanks mate.
Cheers Alex, I hear you but typical western food is difficult to come by in locations that remote..
AWESOME!!
Thanks Patrick! 🙂
That's amazing
Thanks 🙂
"The icebergs aren't lining up... " :o)
I guess after that little trip back to the hotel, a beer was good for whatever ale'd ya ? :)
I'm definitely stealing that :)
Nice video
Time for a Bear??? ;-)
haha!
Yeah, thanks for that mate. I need to buy a new camera, visit my daughter in Sidney, buy a new Mac and now you have added a trip to Greenland :-) The wallet is getting thinner by the minute.
haha, sorry mate!
Not if the polar bear had a gun too!🤷🏻♂️
I hope Greenland limits the number of tourist so it doesn't get overrun like Iceland. The pictures looking out the windows look photoshopped and I know they aren't. I can't believe that the wind was so calm.
Me too :)
I'm a regular viewer of your videos; as in I've them watched all, but I do have to say I don't agree with people going to try to see polar bears while being prepared to
shoot them if you see one a bit too close up. Something similar was reported as having happened quite recently I believe. Its not as bad as slaughtering a giraffe or a lion so you can get a selfie of yourself with the corpse, but I think it would be best if we could leave an already struggling species alone. Sorry you didn't get to see
one.
Hi Derek, I was desperate to see one but we certainly didn't set out to find a Polar bear. And I'm with you, I'm dead against one being shot unless it was about to kill me in an unprovoked attack. I was worried when I edited this that it sounded like I was a bit too happy we had a gun with us - it was simply peace of mind, that's all. Thanks for watching :)
HELP ME !!!!!!
The birds didn't hear you! May be they don't care about money! Or both!
hahahahaa you copied thomas heaton. uncanny impression. xD
- this is coming from a huge fan of thomas'
Wasn't meant to be specifically Thomas, haha!
you actually replied! that's unexpected :D
and dont worry, it was amazingly done. im sure if he sees it he'll be proud!
ps. love the content you produce man.
(Not) first!
😂
Poor whales. And definitely not the country.
ahhh to be rich and a white European man
At 1st when you were talking about polar bears, I thought you wanted to see them, seems like that would be a sweet nature shot... funny how living takes priority over better photography, hahaha just messing with ya... awesome video, have a great day...take it easy...
😂 I know, clearly I'm not dedicated enough to the cause!
There is a youtuber I watch time to time who often says - in order to improve your photography, do not buy a new camera, but spend the money to travel to an interesting place ;)
I couldn't agree more :)
I love the shot of you lying down on the iceberg!
Cheers Andrew! Me too :)
If Britian was a person 😂. I really value your content because for me your photography really inspires me and makes me want to pursue a career of photography (13 years old) . I couldn't recommend enough that you visit sogn og fjordane In Norway I'm sure you would love it and take great photos , I have some on my ig @nordicscape . :)
Nice Stanley - it's certainly on the list! Thanks for the kind words :)
Just starting my photography journey, so I just found you, you are hilarious. The little quips, the facial expressions, comedic timing inserting clips. Great videos mate, I'm binging them.
Top drawer James 👍🏻
Cheers Gary!
Just sent you a PM (email)
That was AMAZING :)
Thanks Scott! :)
Wow, not watched a video of yours for a wee while - life and that, know what I mean? I'm really glad I saw this one though. Looks, erm, amazing. Seriously though, I love your editing style and story telling. I find it quite inspiring and hope to be able to copy you in many ways, technically speaking. You're a teacher!
Thanks mate! Glad you were able to catch it! :)
He should have aimed at the bit below the water, it's reputedly much larger.
Hi James. Just wondering if your still happy with your move from the Full Frame Nikon to M43rds? I've recently upgraded to a G9 from my old GH3 and I'm more than happy with the G9. Just wondered what your thoughts were?
Really happy mate, throughly enjoying it :)
Just to screw with you: The probability of something unlikely happening increases the more times it hasnt happened as long as the probability doesnt reset (Lottery resets, polarbears die, you move etc etc.)
I like that!
I am follower nr. 57.410 and That’s the best number in the world, so happy!!😀
Thanks :)
Man.. you sounded like Thomas Keaton when the landscape vlogger mode kicked in.
haha! I'll take that :)
That light (e.g. at 04:01) is amazing. It seems like a heck of a trip to get there, though!
Yes to both :)
try absolutely stunning to substitute amazing.
This is a good one James. This is a really good one.
Thanks :)
How cold was it? You did not seem that wrapped up.
Somewhere between -2c and 4c for the week :)
Great video! Extremely jealous. My GF and I are going on a Norwegian cruise for NYE, hoping to get a glimpse of the Northern Lights too. What settings did you use to capture the shot in your video? Think it’s at 3:30 ish. Thanks!
Exposure of about a second, then play with the others until you get something bright enough :)
James Popsys Thanks that’s great news! Most guides I’ve read suggested 8-10 second exposures which seems an eternity. Especially since I’m hoping to get a few time lapses. If you don’t mind me asking what’s the overall cost of travelling to Greenland like? Sounds like a lot of flights/helicopter rides/boats. Would I need an XL piggy bank?
Phenomenal location mate. And brilliant images as always. You are really showing what micro four thirds can do. Are most the shots in this video single exposure? The dynamic range seems excellent.
Thanks Adam! Bracketed for most but only needed a single exposure for all in the end 🙂
You definitely earned that beer!
That's it I'm getting on the next plane :) Keep a beer for me :) P.S. Favorite shot....You on your back on the Iceberg, and EVERY OTHER SHOT (not the one you missed of course)! Fantastic stuff.
Do it Graeme! :)
I'm green with envy...seriously!!! Mindblowing views! :)
Me too, and I was there :)
lucky you!! and...I will be there! some day!
“I’ve not even left yet and I’m desperate to come back” doesn’t happen often except for when you are getting paid to promote the place...😉
I hear you Micah, but I don't lie for money :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto sure, I was only being cheeky...it looks amazing...probably a touch jealous!
11:53 Stunning photo.
Thanks :)
Sooooo jealous 👏👏👏
Me too, and I was there!
looks absolutely amazing....any idea if you will be promoting workshops for this area?
Amazing photos James! Wow, that place looks so fantastically beautiful. On the same day I viewed your vid, my nephew was posting pics and video from the Grand Canyon and Sedona Arizona. So jealous of both of you right now. If you're ever here and you haven't been, you should definitely visit Arizona. The light and the incredible vistas are unbelievable. I love going there at least a couple of times a year. Looking forward to your next vid from Greenland!
Hi James, great video, you lucky bugger getting 'paid for' adventure holidays......but great to see you doing so well. Cheers Chris.
u have the funniest..best vlogs..luv watching...more people should be following u...
You tried pulling off a Thomas Heaton there!
Pulling off Thomas Heaton? Sounds more like RedTube than youtube (Not that I know what redtube is, of course)
How did I do? haha
Brilliant video and shots and very interesting, bet you can't wait to get back to Wales!!!!!!!!
Come back.... Ill pay you!!! Greedy birds. Love the content man. Been here for a while its nice to see the growth you have had. Keep it up.
