  • THIS FILM DOCUMENT IS AN ARCHIVE, NOT A DOCUMENTARY, AND DOES NOT AIM AT SHOWING CONTEMPORARY TURKEY.
THE FILM CREW TRAVELS BEFORE ARRIVING IN ISTANBUL. SO TO SEE TURKEY PLEASE WATCH AFTER THE FIRST 2 MINUTES AND UNTIL THE END.
This is the text left by the filming crew in 1930 along with the film : Turks still smoke the old way. December 13, 1930. Various scenes of the manufacturing processes of pipes, combs, and spoons by hand. Scenes from a Bazaar including the arrival of a truck convoy bringing mail to Istanbul.
Commentaries have been deactivated due to several inappropriate, racist and spiteful comments.
Useful information left in commentaries before deactivation : I believe the scenes before 2:30 are from Iraq. My guess is that the film crew travelled with postal cars delivering overland mail from Iraq. The Arabic script writing on the trucks at 1:30 are in Arabic rather than in Turkish written in Arabic script (which would no longer be used in 1930 anyway), and you can hear a child speaking Arabic at 0:51. Since it says 'overland mail' in English rather than in French, I assume the trucks are coming from Iraq and not Syria, and that the earlier locations are in Iraq.
And : Yes, the first part is not from Turkey. Here is the answer to the mystery: First of all, the use of fez (the type of hat they wear) was strongly prohibited in Turkey after 1925. Besides, when I listen to the chattering at this part, I hear that the people speak in Arabic. Some of the people wears this black - white scarfs and they are tied as the Arabs do. If you look at the 1:21 you will see that it is written "NAIRN OVERLAND MAIL" in front of the bus. This is their route. fuchs-online.co... You will see a huge river at the beginning of the video. If we combine the route information and the huge river, we may ended with Baghdad. I think this river is Euphrates (maybe Tigris?) river. It is purely Turkey after 2.32. Fun fact: The teacher at the 9:30 sings in the Greek accent.
This video it NOT a documentary film, it is rough archival material, without re-cut or editing or anything like that, just the archive as it has been shot and preserved since 1930, and the title is from the archive itself, dating back to 1930. No more information left by the American newsreel filming crew, so it was impossible to determine with a 100% accuracy where the first scenes had been shot, although it was obviously not Istanbul but somewhere in the surrounding countries or provinces.
