Fringe was ahead of its time. It's honestly frusturating how underrated the show is. I finished the series recently and it has such a great storyline and characters. Every actor in the show acted their asses off, espeically John Noble and Anna Torv. Like I get if season 1 may be a bit slow because it was sort of like a 'case of the week' each episode, but it adds to the story (I PROMISE). Everything will pick up in season 2 and it just gets better every season. So please, if you are hesitant in continuing the show. Don't stop! The plot thickens!

    • @hectorcardenas7110

While I agree that the show was totally underrated, I don't think it would have lasted that long should it have been made today. It worked perfectly as a hybrid of procedural and serialized storytelling and we don't have much procedurals these times, especially when streamers are leaning more towards shorter seasons with one main story and little time for actual character development and filler episodes (that help so much when it comes to character development.) I also think that there's so much content these days, that it would have been buried in a sea of shows. I truly enjoyed Fringe and it's one of my all-time favorites and I think the fact that I had to watch it weekly instead of binge watching it made for a much more satisfying experience.

This is one of my favorite series by far. For telling such a story at a time when storytelling through TV series was still hindered by needing to be accessible by audiences who happens to turn the TV on at the time, They killed it. The redemption that Walter was always striving for and Olivia and Peter's relationship that has time to breath was great. The love between father and son was amazing. Even though it's so messed up that he took another Peter he ended up being a better father than Walternate ever could have been. The way they left bread crumbs leading up to the big reveals about Peter's origin were perfect. For how much change the writer and show runners went through this show was phenomenal. It reminds me of some great comic runs that go through different writers and end up working out great. The parallel universe that ends up getting a lot of focus is so great. The premiere of Season 2 was awesome, just a thrill ride. The way Walter sacrifices himself at the end with the white rose. Oh man it's soooo beautiful. It has flaws for sure but it's a phenomenal series with amazing talent.

ngl. I find him the weakest link in the show. It's like they have to shove his character down our throats and force a relationship with the FL so that he can stay relevant to the show.
It really felt that the writers had to write him as the ultimate machine operator to save the world to make him more heroic than he appeared to be.

I don't know if there were actually more contemporary sci-fi and fantasy series in that mid-2000s to mid-2010s era, but it sure seemed like it and looking back a lot of them were at least enjoyable. You mentioned a few, but I myself loved The Middleman, Eureka, and Alphas. Now, I think Fringe is clearly several cuts above the various Sci-Fi Channel Originals and Canadian imports that showed up in that period, but thinking about it all does make me miss those days.

Speaking of mystery box shows, I have to recommend The Leftovers. It's an extreme anti-mystery box show, with so many mysteries that are setup, with no answer ever revealed or even planned by the writers. It sounds like it would be a frustrating watch but it all comes together so well. I would say if you like the episode "Fly" of BrBa, you might like The Leftovers because while there definetly is a plot, it takes a backseat to the characters. Not a show for everyone but the perfect show for me, and the best show ever in my opinion.

This was a great show. I love to return to it every few years. And yes, I skip the whole first season.
When I watched “Peter” the first time I knew that while the casting for this series was great it was the writing for Walter Bishop and John Noble’s performance that really sealed it for me. He plays, Crazy, Tripping, Genius, Comedic, Savant, and Megalomaniac, all to sweet perfection, across Walter and “Walternate.”
The fact that Abrams and Noble new exactly what they wanted to do with this character is what allowed the show to find it’s footing. I was a teenager when X-Files aired and got to watch it religiously through college. This show brilliantly captured the 20th Century “Alien Conspiracy” trope in a PRE high-speed internet world.
I think that Fringe was the Seminole 21st century version of this and I always loved how it avoided “Aliens” and made “US” the architects of our own prison.

The depth you go to is impressive, but the insight you give in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses is what I like best. I'm thinking of season 4, specifically. The dissonance between what the audience expected in Olivia's and Peter's storyline and what we actually got, the half-measure of giving Olivia her memories back, all of that was very well said

    I seriously loved this series!
One thing that you didn't touch on, but I find an interesting little tidbit as well. Is that the Observers (especially the 'main' one that was seen during the beginning seasons) were eventually kind of tossed everywhere along the network that the show was running on. (Being Dutch, I don't know the original network. I wanna say ABC? But I can be seriously wrong.)
So you could see an Observer in like baseball games. Other shows in the backgrounds. The occasional custom ad for that network. Etc. It was really neat, because it caused people to pay attention and then go back to the series as well. As someone who doesn't live in the US. I am frankly a little sad about not having been able to witness that. Other than the outside sources that I have seen it being talked about, like Reddit, or even the Wiki at that point (I don't know if it's still on there. It used to be.)

Fringe developed into one of the better "Boot Strap Paradox" stories I've had the plesure of watching.
[Observers = the extinction of life on Earth, the series of Fringe is how the people that Walter encounters in the futre prevent this extinction event, because if Walter doesn't go to that future with his knowledge and experience as evidence, life on earth becomes extinct. Quite possibly this is the result of another scientific team from the Observer reality? And Peter's return and Olivia's memories in series 4 are part of a greater experiment]
The previous section of my comment is so I can take the "power of love" explination and put it in the trash lol.. Another wonderful paradox of thought and logic. Argh, too feel safe again.....

Fringe is my favourite series ever. My partner and i started our 3rd rewatch of it this week and i actually think the first season holds up, even if they did retcon some things it never took me out of it.
47:01 oh yeah! They did a Final Fantasy VIII childhood friends amnesia plot twist!

Loved revisiting what was always appointment television for me. “Letters of Transit” remains one of my favorite episodes of anything ever, and following Kirk Acevedo from this introduced me to one of my favorite shows of all time in “12 Monkeys.” God bless “Fringe,” and the RUclips algorithm that brought me to this.

Olivia Dunham is one of the sexiest female TV characters, she is strong willed and confident whilst still being feminine and emotional. They did a great job of writing what feels like a real life strong women without any need to pander to such a character as is done in most TV shows by 2020s.

I never liked that the timeline often got overwritten. It really should have just been two more universes that Peter got sucked into. That season 4 trailer was awesome though!
Also keep in mind that I don't think Future Peter and Olivia from the Observer world ever made it back to the past when Walter went with Michael to the future.

At some point when it aired on tv I was absolutely consumed by it. The turns it took, the "when you think it cant get any weirder" it exceeded even further.
Man, I love it till this day. The ending of season 1 is carved in my mind since I saw it for the first time. It blew my mind.

Anna Torv was so damn great. I wish I saw her in more stuff. Lance Reddick was easily. What kept me watching as well. Shit. The whole cast was amazing. There is usually at least one cast member that I didn't care for , but not this show.
I low-key was all up for The Pattern playing out but now realizing the JJ mystery box bs makes me feel better that they quietly moved on from that.

Thank for reviewing a show that is desperately underrated but is truly a masterpiece of scifi drama.

In a world of reboots I feel this series could use that if it had a writing team that had a more focused story to produce. I really loved the parallel worlds concept.

My favourite show ever! It’s been my ringtone and wallpaper for pretty much the last decade. The one thing that always aggravated me was that if it were not for September distracting Walternate from the cure, none of it would have happened. September - an advanced, extremely intelligent observer capable of travelling through time and space - had ONE JOB! He made this one little mistake that was so bad it literally almost destroyed two universes but he couldn’t go back in time and correct this mistake? Bruh.
