  • Is this a Fail-lite? The DeWalt 18mm snap-blade Utility Knife has some serious issues. But then again, it could just be me.

Horrible design. I have gone through 3-4 at work. Always lose the “belt clip” too.

I have no idea why the belt clip is designed to detach when the wind blows. So pointless!

Every time I snap off one of those blades, I feel like I'm about to lose an eye!

I’ve have three of these and use and abuse them daily. I think they perform really well for my needs. They are affordable, compact, simple, and nimble because of the narrow nose. The clip just needs to be crushed slightly by hand to fit a bit tighter if its loose. No tool is perfect and a lot of complaints seem more like user error or inattention to the tool. There are also different needs for shop work vs site work. Any tool can be made to look ineffective if thats your goal.

Out of the total of 4 different snap off blade knives I have, the Dewalt is my favorite. I like the weight of it & the shape/size. It not bulky feeling. The Dewalt is seamless. No problems with gripping it. And I’ve never had the snap off clip just shoot out as I retract the blade. I guess it needs to be said that it’s not a pocket clip.
And IDK of a snap off knife where the blade just doesn’t fall out when you remove it the way you showed. “Turn it like so & the blade just fall out.” Well yeah. Sounds like you’re just reaching for any little problem. Your only real issues are weight & spring/blade holder. Leave it at that.
I own the same Olfa knife you showed. I feel like it’s cheap & under weight. Feels & weighs like a cheap priced snap off knife that you can get at the check out stands at the hardware stores. Plus no end cap to snap off the blade. See that’s me just nitpicking.

I know you're just trying to criticize the reviewer's opinion but some of the things you said about OLFA are a bit exaggerated, the OLFA knife in this video is lightweight but it's much better quality than the cheap knives you can find in local stores because OLFA uses glass fiber reinforced polypropylene which is not only stronger but also resistant to solvent and acid than the regular ABS or Polycarbonate plastics that cheap knives use.
The lightweight handle is also very useful for reducing the burden for people who carry various tools in their tool belts while working or people who use utility knives for a long time such as when installing wallpaper or crafts.
The wraps all around handle is also more comfortable than a Dewalt when you use it without gloves, the OLFA slider/locking part is also sturdier, the preset detents is also much stronger because it's on two sides and and even though the OLFA doesn't have a back cap there is a stopper which will keep the slider from popping out like Dewalt's pocket clip/back cap.
If you prefer metal handles then OLFA also provides MXP series and based on my experience OLFA knives with auto lock also have tighter tolerances so there is less blade movement even the OLFA handles which are completely made of regular ABS plastic have less blade movement than a knife I bought at a local store you can see it in my channel if you want.

I’m not saying Olfa knife is bad knife. Again I own it. I was nitpicking. I wasn’t exaggerating. Olfa feels like a cheap knife. Doesn’t mean it is, just how it feels To Me. The Olfa isn’t a slim design. It’s bulky like & is very little weight. It doesn’t have a snap off clip. So what. Again that’s me nitpicking.
The poster of this video is “exaggerating”. Nitpicking (like I did with Olfa knife) to make contain. The Dewalt has a detent (may not be all that great but it still helps) when retracting it all the way to the end so it doesn’t just pop off. Unlike in the video where he over did it & Force it to shoot off the clip.
I like the Dewalt. I think the detent is perfect & never had it just shoot off. I knew from the start that the snap off end isn’t a belt clip.
Again the poster is “exaggerating” with how bad the Dewalt really is. Clip shooting off, weight of the knife, grip, blade just falling out of the channel with out the blade holder. He doesn’t like the knife fine. But he overdoes it to show how bad this knife is when it’s not as bad as he says.

@@TDNomad I think what reviewers have said in this video is not exaggerating because if you look at the user reviews on the official Dewalt website you will see some people having problems or missing the back caps/clip.
And it seems that what I'm worried about plastic slider and detents of Dewalt knife that appear to have a weaker construction is also confirmed by some user reviews.
You associate lighter weight with cheap products even though that's not always the case and you also prioritize the outer casing over essential components and comfort.
OLFA use stainless steel plates with a thickness of 0.8mm for the 18mm blade channel and 1mm for the 25mm blade while the cheap local brand 18mm knife that i have uses steel with a thickness of 0.5mm, the detents and plastic slider on OLFA also appear to have a stronger construction and tighter tolerance that's why i disagree when you say that OLFA knives feels like cheap knives from a local store even if you're just "nitpicking".

You keep missing the part where I said feels like but doesn’t mean it is. Never said Olfa is bad. And I don’t “associate” light weight or what feels like cheap quality, as actual cheap quality. Youre Reaching. I wouldn’t own Olfa if I didn’t really like it. Go look up nitpicking cause you seems to want to make the same point over & over. Cool you think Dewalts knife sucks. Fine. I don’t & made note of it. I said what I think is nitpicking. You don’t agree, fine.
And nice of you to just copy & paste the Olfa info like as if you’re a spokesman for them. “They use blah blah”

I do like the 25mm Dewalt version of the same design, I'll take the weight penalty to not have something the diameter of a baseball bat and covered in overmolded rubber 🙄 It's nice to actually be able to seamlessly use and replace a tool from a belt/bag/organizer while only occupying a standard chisel/knife spot, I have broken one out of maybe 6 (plastic locking mechanism) and I usually just throw the blade snap false advertising belt hook away! Passable design with great potential though, although Dewalt will NEVER improve it... rather they will find a way to add rubber to it and make it thicker and heavier 🤦‍♂️

Doc, can you give us an update on the contents of your veto bag. Did you optimize the tool inventory? Do you have less tools in it now but are able to do more? Let us know!

I have a cheap snap blade knife that I got at Walmart. It had what looked like the usual slot to keep spare blades in, but for some reason, the slot isn't quite tall enough for a blade to fit in.
Anyway, I did the same thing as you - I removed the outer plastic housing so it was just the stainless steel part, and now it lives in a small tool kit I keep in a Maxpedition pouch.

You can't flip the blade around on the 25mm DeWalt. It has a 45 to hold the end of the blade so it only goes one way.

The 9 & 18 DeWalt rear clip always seem to works it's way loose and the blades always rust before any serious use.
