After the Russians invaded Ukraine this week, 1944 might be the greatest Eurovision winner ever. It was criticized by many in 2016 for being too political but for the people of Ukraine, today must feel like 1944 all over again.
This song is about the Crimeean Tatar who were deported from their homland. The lyrics are not in Ukrainian. It’s heartbreaking that now all of the Ukrainians are experiencing this.
im american but after reading all the lyrics and watching this video i honestly get chills when i hear it because of the literal bloodshed and terror it comes from. you really feel the emotion of it. even when i first heard this i got emotional because i could understand bits and pieces of it and could see people crying and that really showed me that this is a song of suffering and raw emotion. i really didn't need to understand everything she was saying in order to feel what the song is intended to make you feel
To me this song transcends race or ethnicities. We as humanity have a problem of always making someone else the "other" and we commit horrific atrocities upon them. It's not fair or moral in anyway but for some reason it keeps happening.
I remember voting for this song, I thought it was too good for Eurovision. Never seen the official video though...It`s so powerful... We stand for You, Ukraine!
This song means a lot to me. It was my father's favourite. He died suddenly during the night after her semi final. He didn't live long enough to see her winning... God bless you Jamala. Thank you so much for your beautiful song and performance Hugs from Bosnia and Herzegovina

KarlEuro89 just because I voted for Russia in 2015, doesn't mean I vote for them every year! I haven't voted for the same country twice since Eurovision came back to Italy in 2011 :)

I've been watching livestream online of it for 2 years now, and after watching last year's performances and listening to song lyrics and the artists' melodic styles, I firmly believe, in my opinion, that she was the right choice. this song was so unique, wonderfully written, and marvelously performed.

This is a song about violence and about deportations, grandmother, grandmother Jamala and her very little father, who were forcibly deported from their historic homeland of Crimea, after the end of the 2nd plague war about Stalin's orders. A whole people was declared traitors to the USSR, and on the day before the men had yet to return from the war, they carried out a forced deportation.
@@eugeniyzub9729 they were deported during the WWII because up to 50-60% of their population collaborated with Hitler. Unfortunately, peaceful citizens also were deported to Asia.
There was no and there can be no evidence that the local population was accomplices of the Nazis. This is the Stalinist propaganda, only an excuse was needed .. The Germans almost did not touch the Crimean Tatars, treated them more loyally than the Slavic population, but this does not mean that they collaborated with the German army !!!
And the deportation of Chechens and Ingushes, which occurred at the same time as the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944, then Stalin also accused the local indigenous population of cooperation with the Nazis. But what about the fact that during the hostilities in the Caucasus of 1942-1944, the territory of Chechnya-Ingushetia was not even occupied !!!
I remember the moment exactly as I was watching Eurovision in the middle of the night, heard Jamala singing and got confused: I can understand her?! Is this a turkic language? Is she singing Mugham?! She deserved to win and she won. The song is a masterpiece...
This music video is so literal I don't know how anyone could miss the point of it. Chaos, distress n people totally unaware of destruction represents what the world is today and back then. Simply said history repeating yet we pretend the outcome will be different this time. I have never liked anything so undefinable by genre but this is one amazing art piece. It says something abt this beautiful work when someone so jaded like me can actually cry watching it.
The fact that this was even allowed to be presented at Eurovision will always be a true miracle. That night, media culture in Europe made a big step towards maturity, even for those blinded by nationalist brainwashing who got upset about this. Grief, hope and crave for justice channeled in a contemporary masterpiece.

The lyrics for "1944" concern the deportation of the Crimean Tatars, in the 1940s, by the Soviet Union at the hands of Joseph Stalin because of their alleged collaboration with the Nazis. Jamala was particularly inspired by the story of her great-grandmother Nazylkhan, who was in her mid-20s when she and her five children were deported to barren Central Asia. One of the daughters did not survive the journey. Jamala's great-grandfather was fighting in World War II in the Red Army at this time and thus could not protect his family. The song was also released amid renewed repression of Crimean Tatars following the Russian annexation of Crimea, since most Crimean Tatars refuse to accept the annexation. This is why.
This reminds me of the deportation of my grandparents from Chechnya to Siberia by the Russians. Russians did a lot of bad things to a lot of nations.. it's very tragic and unfortunately many people forget about it.
Russians did bad things but idont know how you forgot a Georgian who ordered it and if I remember correctly the Red army was not all Russian there were also people from other countries they were also part of the people who carried this out.
Honestly, when I'm reading the back story, i can't help but feel amazed that after these times of surpression, the people finally can tell their story. It really makes me happy for them. We should never take such times in history as granted. Times will always come again when it matters on which side you stand

1944 yılında Stalin in "No Man, No Problem" "İnsan yoksa sorun da yok" felsefesiyle Kırım, Tatar ve Kazan Türkleri soykırıma uğratıldılar. Me, a 24 years old Spanish boy, been watching every single Eurovision contest since 2002, have never remembered any winner for years like this. I didn't even know the history about Crimean Tatars, this song even made me to look for all the history, and I think this is so powerful to just a song. After the Russians invaded Ukraine this week, 1944 might be the greatest Eurovision winner ever. It was criticized by many in 2016 for being too political but for the people of Ukraine, today must feel like 1944 all over again.

To me this song transcends race or ethnicities. We as humanity have a problem of always making someone else the "other" and we commit horrific atrocities upon them. It's not fair or moral in anyway but for some reason it keeps happening.

Hello
Im African American, I have no idea what’s being said but the emotion from the video & the way she sings makes me cry, like the song, it sounds like its a statement, I wish I understood... this music is beautiful
She's from tatar heritage en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deportation_of_the_Crimean_Tatars
I just discovered this excellent song and powerful voice. I think a new singer is being added to my Spotify list :D Peace and love from Turkey

Yaşlanmadım? (Qocalmadım)
I remember the moment exactly as I was watching Eurovision in the middle of the night, heard Jamala singing and got confused:
I can understand her?!
"Коли приходять чужинці, вони вбивають і кажуть : "Ми невинні, ми невинні"...як все збулося..Вони уявили себе Богами,але вони смертні...
She sings it so beautiful. The emotions really get to me
(much love from Germany. Jamala really deserved to win)
The fact that this was even allowed to be presented at Eurovision will always be a true miracle. That night, media culture in Europe made a big step towards maturity, even for those blinded by nationalist brainwashing who got upset about this. Grief, hope and crave for justice channeled in a contemporary masterpiece.

From Brazil 🇧🇷 This music is so powerful, strong
1944 yılında Stalin in "No Man, No Problem" "İnsan yoksa sorun da yok" felsefesiyle Kırım, Tatar ve Kazan Türkleri soykırıma uğratıldılar.

Humanity needs to fucking stand up and unite in peace. END WAR!!!!! The people always suffer the most from war. The ones causing it are profiting from the suffering and destruction of these people and our planet. War happening anywhere is a direct attack on humanity as a whole. STAND TOGETHER!! or one day the fires will reach your front door. We must master peace before humanity can be a masterpiece. Anyone that reads this tell someone that you love them before war and its cruelty take that away from you. Soldiers across the planet stand together and disobey orders telling you to kill your own species, There is no reason nor amount of money to justify following orders to kill people for your governments own sick twisted agendas, Its sickening and places shame on the whole human existence, Be above those hungry for riches and power because our obedience grants them more of both. We've obeyed this whole time and look where its gotten everyone. Open your eyes blind followers and break away from the ones who wish to dominate you. To the people of Ukraine, I love each and every one of you, dont let the actions of governments dictate how you view its people because no one wants war. Let the elite scum of this earth watch the power of humanity slip away from its grasp turning their backs on those who cause our suffering. We are above all this nonsense people. Take back control of your lives or obey yourself into unbreakable chains of complete and total domination.

I'm A Turk, and this song really impressed me. It's a great sound. 🇹🇷❤️
She talks here out of her experience. When World War II hit the Solviet Union, Stalin Exiled most of the Tatar people out of their native lands to Ukraine (mainly Crimea) Uzbekistan (Tashkent) and many other regions in Solviet aria.
It's kinda difficult to tell you the exact literal translation, but I'll try to bring up the meaning since im not Tatar.
"Yashlig'imga To'yalmadim" means "Wasn't satisfied or couldn't enjoy my childhood"
"Men bu yerda yashalmadim" means "I couldn't live here" or more accurate translation is "I didn't enjoy my livelihood in this place"
Malik Mamatkhan first one is correct but second one must be '' ı didnt grow up here''

Exactly, it is funny how jamala turned Eurovision 2016 into the political debates
Thank you for the explanation of the song, and the history lesson..love this song even more !!
Stay bitter, Russians. Jamala is the winner and is in a class of her own.
+niko The jurors are people too. Corrupt people, but still people.
People didn't give any points to Czech Republic, but juries did. You cannot rely on TV viewers completely, because they're stupid.
viewers are stupid, but the jury is not present?
Russia won hearts of people only because of performance. I still can't stand 'You are the only one' as a song, really. For me it is so annoying...
OK, I thought that it's Eurovision Song Contest, not Eurovision Performance Contest...
I am so sorry. I wish my country and I can do more. Stay strong Ukraine.
