I was so lucky to be a student of Didier Lockwood's for two years! He has had so much influence over how I play jazz violin, and how I teach!
I miss Didier Lockwood a lot, his passing was an tremendous loss for the world of jazz and violin as well. Now I would like to transmit the musical knowledge that he gave me!

Sometimes, people call that sidestepping. Usually, its most effective when we play a four note grouping, like 1-2-3-5, then go up or down a half step and play 1-2-3-5 again. Then resolve back to the original key, but start on another note, like 3-5-6-1 keeping the similar shape of the phrase. Best not to use that too often, people will recognize it pretty quickly and think, oh they are doing that thing I've heard before. But if you rock it back and forth, it could turn into a development of a melody, So 1-2-3-5, up 1-2-3-5, down 3-5-6-1, up 3-5-6-1, down 5-6-1-2, up 5-6-1-2, down 6-1-2-3, up 6-1-2-3. Usually, we just repeat the same phrase up or down a half step then move on to the next thing.

Another thing that sounds 'out' is, in Major Key use the Lydian, so play 1-2-3-5 then play the same thing up a whole step 2-3-#4-6.
