Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Lady", "Lorelei", "Suite Madame Blue", "Come Sail Away", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Mr. Roboto", "Babe", "The Best of Times", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise" etc.
The name comes from the River Styx in mythology. Everyone had to cross it to get to the afterlife. You also picked my favorite song from em.( oh yeah it's Greek mythology)
Tons of great Styx songs. Great ballads and great rockin tunes. Lady, Come Sail Away, Suite Madame Blue, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball……the list goes on.
When Tommy Shaw presented this song to the band it was a folk song, not quite a ballad but slower. Vocalist and Keyboardist Dennis DeYoung suggested they make it a rocker. A great example of multiple talented musicians working together to create a classic!
@@andreadeamon6419 that is not really accurate. Dennis himself has stated that fact during an interview and JY or Tommy have not disputed that fact. And if Tommy was such a straight ahead rocker. Then explain the folk songs and ballads he wrote?
I know this is going to be a good one! This song is banger!! I love 70's music so much. I was a young girl but just loved all the genres. I've seen them in concert twice. One word... INCREDIBLE! Their name comes from Greek mythology. Referencing The River Styx. The River Styx is not a real place in world geography. It was the main river in the Greek mythological Underworld that the souls of the dead crossed.
Probably one of my favorite songs of all time! Styx's biggest song that most people know is Come Sail Away. The band name comes from Greek Mythology, The River Styx. It's the river that takes you into Hades or the Underworld.
Their name comes from the River Styx, a location in Greek Mythology that serves as a barrier separating the world of the living from the world of the dead.
More Styx please! There are kinda two faces to Styx, the rocker side your hearing now with Tommy Shaw on guitar and singing because he just likes to shred and then songs you've yet to hear with Dennis DeYoung singing their ballads (so many great slow love songs). Aside from the songs already mentioned, try Too Much Time on My Hands, another rocker. Dennis left to go on his own while Styx continued without him. Both were still touring separately before Corona happened.
Styx are iconic classic rock! Not a bad song in their very extensive catalog! I’ve see them live six times and they are frickin’ amazing! This is a band that you need to crank up the volume!!
I met Tommy Shaw downtown Cincy one morning .. very nice guy ... was funny it's a long story, but watching Tommy shaw on VH1 on TV "where are they now" and at same time him sitting in front of me was surreal..

wow - got a lot to unpack here. 1 - according to a quick search, rhinoceroses is the most correct way to say it. However rhinoceri is becoming more accepted. FWIW, a group of rhinos is called a CRASH. It separated the mortal world from Hades. One would pay "the Ferryman" (aka Charon - pronounced kare-on) 3 - The drummer you raved about - John Panozzo. Yeah he was a beast. He passed in 96 due to complications from alcoholism. 4 - The band formed in 1970 in Chicago. Their first hit single "LADY" (1972) was a huge triumphant hit - though the band only ever had one song reach #1, the contemporary song "BABE" in 1982. The band is what you would call "progressive rock" or Prog-rock. The primary attributes of the prog-rock subgenre is moderate to great use of keyboards, unique styles and time-signatures in songs, and frequent flow-changes (change-ups) within the song. A lot of 'experimental' stuff. Rush is probably the most iconic of all prog-rock. Their song "Come Again" is IMO one of THE greatest guitar songs of all time. Their live performance showcasing Ted on guitar and Tommy on vocals will steal the breath from rock fans from the energy and masterful BEASTMODE of guitar shredding by "Terrible" Ted Nugent!!! (see link below - and please react to that amazing song). ruclips.net/video/zPvTD4fXTNE/видео.html
Tommy Shaw the singer and the guy who kills the guitar solo has been one of my musical heroes since I was about 11 - 12 years old. His voice is so underrated. The band is incredible, but I love Tommy Shaw. Genius and he doesn't read music...which is incredible on its own.
Styx has been my favorite band since 1977, and the Grand Illusion album (a must to listen to the whole album). In concert for this one they have another guitar solo and other stuff. They had 3 lead vocalist/songwriters on 2 guitars(Tommy Shaw, James "JY" Young) and keyboards(Dennis DeYoung), so they have a wide variety of songs. Some Rockers: "Blue Collar Man", "Queen Of Spades", "Snowblind", "Castle Walls", "Man In The Wilderness", "Miss America", "Best Thing", and "Born For Adventure". Some Combos: "Come Sail Away"(album version or 1996 live ruclips.net/video/VMFVkGA1Qfw/видео.html), "Prelude 12/Suite: Madam Blue", "Crystal Ball", "Lady", "Fooling Yourself", "Clair De Lune/Ballerina", and "Lorelei". Ballad: "Babe" Jazz-rock Fusion: "A Day". Gospel: "Show Me The Way". Something completely different: "Boat On The River".
Two guitarists in the band, Tommy Shaw and James Young. Three singers Tommy Shaw, Dennis DeYoung and James Young. Lead singer and lead guitarist on this track is Tommy Shaw, he also wrote the song.
Live concert are on fire! Saw them with Journey and Peter Frampton. Great show. Just good old classic rock. This rock is considered “corporate rock”. In the late 70 to early 80s, bands were writing their own music so record companies needed a new way to make money. Arena rock was invented. Elaborate sets, pyrotechnics, laser light shows etc. The concert ticket was the money. Now a days it’s the only source of income. No one buys records anymore, they listen to RUclips. Front seat ticket could be $100-200, are now $1500+.
Saw this band live more times than I can count. They had two lead guitarists, Tommy Shaw and JY. This is Tommy Shaw's song and Tommy Shaw on lead vocal and lead guitar.
I listen to your Em videos and I just started to check out some of your other videos and LOVE that you react to “Styx”! They were one of my favorite bands when I was younger! LOVE feeling like I’m back in time listening to these songs I haven’t listened to since like 1985 lol AWESOME group! 🙂
River Styx trivia... Ancient Greeks put coins on the eyes of the dead so they would be able to pay the boatman Charon to ferry them across the Styx to Hades and not be stranded on the wrong side as a rootless shade. The moon of the planet Pluto (Roman equivalent of Hades) is called Charon.
This 'single' was released in January of 1979. But the Lp it came from was out in '78. The lead guitarists on this is James (JY) Young. Tommy Shaw wrote it, and sang the main vocal. The name Styx comes from Greek mythology. It's the river/deity between earth and the underworld. As for the band, their first album was released in 1972. Their 17th original studio Lp came out in June of 2021, and they are still touring today. Unfortunately the drummer you heard here (John Panozzo) passed away in 1996. But the guy who replaced him (Todd Sucherman) is fantastic too. They still have 3 lead singer/songwriters. But one of the original guys Dennis DeYoung, was fired back in 1999. They got someone who is equally as talented. Although the DeYoung fans will disagree. Other rockers from Styx: •"Miss America" (JY wrote, sings, and plays lead guitar). •Oueen Of Spades (written by Dennis DeYoung/James Young. Lead vocals Dennis DeYoung, lead guitars James Young. •Snowblind - written by Dennis DeYoung/James Young/Tommy Shaw. Lead vocals Tommy Shaw/JY Young. Styx is my favorite band. There isn't too much I don't know about them. I've seen them several times in concert. Plus I own most of their albums...
Styx "The Angry Young Man" "Come Sail Away" "Miss America" and ESPECIALLY "SNOWBLIND" There are a dozen more but these ought to keep you busy for a while :)
Great to be with ya..I grew up right around the corner from you on 87th and Blue Ridge clear back in the 60's. Still recovering from Chiefs loss on Sunday. .I watch a lot of reaction videos , usually classic rock , so I'll check in with you
There were three singers in the band. Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw did the majority of the leads, but James Young did an occasional lead. Check out his song Miss America, or Rock N Roll Feeling.
Any song you pick of theirs will be amazing. Also, try The Eagles, Lynard Skynard, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, there are so, so many more I could mention. As for the rhinoceros thing, just shorten it to rhino and say rhinos. It will make your life so much easier, LOL. Great reaction, as always.

Other rockers from Styx:
•"Miss America" (JY wrote, sings, and plays lead guitar).
No, believe it or not, the single only went to #16 in the US, and #10 in Canada...
The name STYX is from a mythological river. Tommy Shaw is the lead singer and guitar player of the group. They are an awesome group.
I'm so happy you listened to the Studio Version first.
🙌🏾🔥🔥
Tommy Shaw on lead vocals. Love him!!
Its about time someone besides me is loving Tommy's voice!!
This is one of my all time favorite bands!!
My favorite band of all time
One of the BEST songs!!!
They need to be in the Rock n roll hall of fame!!!
It was a banger ..big hit in late 70's..lol..Your face was priceless!
That song was HUGE, HHUUGGEEE when I was a teenager!
Before I even watch this I'm here to tell you this song is BADASS.
One of my favorites...
Styx Blue Caller Man
Go with it AB Styx, was fire!!!
They are awesome live!
Awesome song!! Btw, The plural form of rhinoceros is also rhinoceros. In rare, nonstandard, contexts, the plural form can also be rhinoceroses.
Styx is iconic. My first concert back in the '70s and my first album, on vinyl of course.
Another song from my youth!!! YAY!!
2:26 Your face!! I was thinking to myself "Ohh, that yell is about to hit!! He ain't ready!"
Watching you react to the intro makes me think you need to check out Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles.
Other songs from Styx:Blue Collar Man, Suite Madame Blue, Snowblind, and Too Much Time On My Hands, just to name a few.
Thanks for another great show. Drink my juice and go to bed.
Can't go wrong with Styx
Just a fun fact cause you’re wearing a Chiefs hat, this is the Steelers hype song in the 4th quarter and it REALLY gets the crowd going!
70's and 80's music was fire.
Omg! I was just turning this on and my daughter called! Dammitt ....😡
Gotta take care of the kiddos 🙌🏾😂🔥🔥✅✅✅
That's James Young on the rocking guitar. Tommy Shaw is singing lead.
One of my all time favourite songs is Babe by Styx!♥️
Any song you pick of theirs will be amazing. Also, try The Eagles, Lynard Skynard, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, there are so, so many more I could mention. As for the rhinoceros thing, just shorten it to rhino and say rhinos. It will make your life so much easier, LOL. Great reaction, as always.
When that song came out in thr 1970's it was a Hit from the start
I never miss them live. If you get a chance - go see them. You'll love it
I guess I'm showing my age but I been loving this song since it came out! LOL. Since we are going way back you could do ballroom blitz!
