Topping 36 Raised Garden Beds with Compost | 1400 Square Feet of Planting Space

Each year we add compost to all of our vegetable and fruit beds. In the past, we used Cedar Grove bag compost, but the garden is now so big we get a yard or more from a nursery, which is cost-effective. I still use some CG compost and love to have bags on hand. I also compost at home but have not been able to produce enough for all the beds. However, I’m working towards it, so I have full control over what goes in the bins. It’s so important to add compost each year to feed the soil microorganisms and increase the nutrients available to the plants. I also add amendments to correct any nutrient deficiencies, and as appropriate for each type of plant. Some people will leave the amendments and compost on the surface of the beds. I compose to work it into the top few inches of soil.

We recently relocated to a home on one acre in a rural area. We were interested in finding a property that offered true seasons, as well as an easy-going, friendly community leaving the hustle and bustle behind. To suit our needs, we finally found a smaller, newer home on a well-plotted flat acre free of out-structures to create our own spaces.
