This is what you call a God given talent, the man was truly blessed by the Lord to be able to play and sing like that. RIP Reverend Davis you are home now.
I am not a Christian in the usual sense, but this speaks very deeply to me. In all honesty, one of the greatest pieces of music I have ever heard. This performance and composition is absolutely brimming with vibe that speaks of sin, salvation and death. The lyrics can simultaneous be heard as a man rebuking sin and speaking of his salvation, or of a man that knows death is approaching and is attempting to take comfort in his religion, leaning on the hope of salvation and eternal life in the face of an eternity of nothingness. Pure existential angst. Despite the lyrics being about salvation, there is a real darkness to the tune, as though it is in the presence of a great evil. There is something extremely 'off' about it, a real pain that shines through in both the singing, melody and rhythmic sound of the guitar. The guitar work is deceptive, it sounds simple, but is in actual fact layered with syncopation that brings to mind the sound of a mandolin. Some of the licks bring to mind the old bluegrass tune 'Jerusalem Ridge'. His vocal style and power is somehow frightening, there is an urgency and fear to the expression. This man is a true hidden gem, and for a guitar player, an absolute Revelation. This style opens itself up to deeper and deeper appreciation and awe. Truly a religious experience, the power this man possessed.
Hard to believe but I booked Rev Gary Davis for the Giffard Folk Club, wolverhampton, in the late 70s...his driver/minder was Maddy Prior.!..amazing evening...we were spellbound......I also booked Jesse Fuller...and that was the busiest night we ever had at the club!

Was reading about Davis and how he would give guitar lessons to folk in his front room. Stinking the spot out with the white owls that were constantly hanging out tye side of his mouth and waiting for the que that his wife had gone before playing stuff like cocaine blues. I really wish I'd the opportunity to learn from him in person
Fantastic stuff. The fact he does not care for superficial niceties on the guitar kind of add to it. The whole thing is more important than sustained notes, clean notes etc. When he goes off on a flight on things like One Day I'll Fly Away are joyous!

One day as I was walkin' along
I heard the angels singing
I heard a voice and I saw no one
I heard the angels singing
What you reckon he said to me
I heard the angels singing
Said my sins are forgiven and my soul set free
I heard the angels singing
Well, the Holy Ghost on fire fell on me
You ought to have been there when he fell on me
Then I got in the spirit and I began to shout
People come a running, miles around
People wondering what it was all about
Went down in the valley one day just to pray
Met old Satan down on my way
What you reckon that old rascal said to me
He said I was too old to die and too young to pray
I went on down, didn't pay no mind what he said
Made Satan out a liar and I stayed all day
Went down in the valley, fell down on my knees
I said, Lord help me if you please
One morning soon, just awhile before day
One morning soon, just awhile before day
One morning soon, just awhile before day
I heard the angels singing, I heard the angels singing
Down by my bedside I was down on my knees
Down by my bedside I was down on my knees
Down by my bedside I was down on my knees
I heard the angels singing, I heard the angels singing
"he said i was too young to die and too old to pray"
