Bought one two months ago. It’s my favorite lens for sure. It’s a amazing lens, the focus is very fast accurate, it blows out any backgrounds and it really separates your subjects. By far the finest lens I have ever used.
Great review. I love how you include so many real-world examples, not test charts. I’m glad some of your images were self portraits. That was one of the uses I had in mind, so it helped to see your examples.
Just got this lens for my mirrorless body (the R8) and it works flawlessly. I forgot the adapter was even there. The autofocus is fantastic and the image quality is superb.
Thanks for the review!! I own the 85mm f 1.2 II and it produces beautiful results (after removing the CA). The autofocus is so slow though and I really need something to track moving subjects well. If you don’t mind, just a general question: Actually I had to delete my question because your video answered it!! So this lens can get everyone sharp as long as they are in the same focal plane? The 85mm f 1.2 really can’t do that, can it? That was what I noticed on mine.
Hey Gary! Glad it was helpful! Loved the 85 1.2, but like you said it was soft near the edges. The 85 1.4 is sharp to the corners! So if you are carful and have everyone in the same focal plane, they are all sharp! I do it quite often actually with bridesmaids. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I am sure they will make some eventually. That is nice thing about competition, they keep pushing each other. Thankful for Sony in that regard!
Thank you Shane, the exact video i was looking for specifically as you owned the other 85's. i current own the sigma 85/1.4 art and its heavier than a new born. IS i guess will be useful. How does it perform with the EOS R, I do plan to replace my 5D4 with the R in the near future.
I like the lens, but sometimes I'm confused.. The Sigma 35 ART had bad autofocus on the EOS R, the Tamron SP 35 1.4 broke after a year of use and now I have the RF 35 but I'm thinking about the EF 35mm II USM L, is that a good idea? I need quality, sharpness, focus speed and accuracy.. What would you recommend me please?
Hi Shane, your videos are amazing, and I am definitely getting a lot from them. I wonder if you can maybe help me, I have done photography in the past but did stop the past two years. I am looking for budget-friendly lenses or lens for my 60D? What would you recommend to start off again with? Will this one work RF 70-200 f4 plus the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM? Will really appreciate your help
Hey Jacqui! Sorry for the slow reply! I took a break from RUclips for a while! The 85 1.4 is amazing! Highly recommend. I personally like the 135 f/2 more than the 70-200. Hope that helps!
Thanks! Really appreciate that! I just did my review of the RF 85 1.2. With the adapter on the EF 85 1.4 the weight is basically the same and the length actually longer. The price though is significantly more. The EF 85 1.4 is incredible on the R5. I did have it lock up my camera twice though before I sold it. Not sure if the newer firmware fixed that. My guess is that it was something with the IBIS and the lens stabilizer communication. But regardless it focused fast and make beautiful photos!
Great question! I bought the RF85 1.2 and find that I get better IS results with the RF 85 on the R5 than I do with the EF 85 1.4 IS. Though both are incredible lenses, the 1.2 has a little better bokeh and sharpness! Review on it coming soon!
Shane Long Photography my only complaint with the 1.4 is the chromatic aberration, especially wide open. But I’m not sure my camera bag can handle the girth of the 1.2! However I think length and weight are nearly equal due to the EF adapter...
Hello! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from RUclips as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. When made this video, I had already sold my EF 851.2. It was too soft for me. So I had replaced with the 85 1.4 and liked those images a lot better. Hope that helps!
Love this lens it’s one of my favourite lenses.I love the blur at 1.4 but worried about using it at max aperture for an upcoming shoot.Of course I’d love the model to be blown away by the blur but want it to be nice and sharp where needed.Fantastic wedding images they look beautiful.
Hello! Though it isn't a direct comparison, if you haven't watched this video, it might help! ruclips.net/video/GVwDK9O4xn8/видео.html But I can tell you right now the image quality is very similar! They are both VERY Sharp, and are phenomenal even when shot at their widest apertures. The 50mm is a touch sharper but not a whole lot. In situations where there is sun hitting the lens, the 50mm doesn't wash out as much. It will more come down to which focal length you need 50mm or 85mm. If you have enough money, and you don't have good 50mm, maybe start with there. It is my personal favorite (though the 85mm is a close 2nd) But if you are doing a lot of headshots the 85, is better. Here is my blog post on that: shanelongphotography.com/2020/04/27/35mm-50mm-85mm-comparison-lens-review/ Hope that helps!
Shane Long Photography hey bro! What an amazing news! So for my RP, I could get the EF 85mm f1.4 and get “practically” the same results as with the RF 85mm f1.2? What about background blur? Is there a huge difference?
Hello! It performs even better on the R than the 5D! The eye AF nails the focus every time. And because the R doesn't have a mirror box like the 5D, the bokeh doesn't get clipped so it is even larger and more smooth. You will love this lens! I have a link to it in the description if you want to pick it up on Amazon! Have fun!
Just got it! Check out my latest video as I show some photos of it there! ruclips.net/video/l8izgCPnrHc/видео.html The bokeh is bigger and with the IBIS of the R5, the 1.2 has better IS. But the 1.4 is a great lens! I will have a review of the 1.2 in the coming weeks!
Shane Long Photography : Cant wait to see! I’ll be making a choice soon I’m really hesitant on going for the 85 1.2 over the ef 1.4 version, gotta make it count! Haha
I like the EF 85 1.4 IS better. The 1.2 II had too much purple fringing. Focused too slow, was soft at the mid to edges, and overall was softer. Though it had slightly larger bokeh. The 1.4 IS is super fast at focusing, really sharp at 1.4 all the way to the edge, doesn't have much purple fringing, and has IS! Hope that helps!
Мне эта линза понравилась больше всего именно в связке с 1 Dx. Даже больше, чем с 1DxMII. Вот такая физика. Но 85/1,2 более художественный и узконаправленный.
I used to have the 85mm f1.4 which is a complete waste of money, I now have the 2 x f1.8 gold rings that are better value for money and you have change to get more gear.
Haha! Keep at it! I actually have since sold the 85 1.4 and moved on to the newer RF version! But the 85 1.4 is an incredible piece of glass! Keep working hard and saving! I too started out with the super cheap lenses and worked my way up! You can do it!

Isn't incredible! Bet you love it! That AF is so quick and the IS is super handy!
Great review. I love how you include so many real-world examples, not test charts.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Nice! It is one of my all time favorites!
The lens is a dream. I use it as standard on my 5DSR for weddings and generally for portraits.
Agreed. I am sure it resolves wonderfully for you on the 5DSR.
I’m glad you mentioned the Chromatic Aberration that the 85 1.8 produces.
That lens has A LOT of CA!
This is my favourite review on this magical lens ✨
Thanks!! It is an awesome lens!
Great review ❤️😎I’m sold! Going to get it to start second shooting ❤️
It is a fantastic lens! Have fun!
Beautiful shots...
Thanks!

Good review Shane! We’re Sony shooters and would love to see a 85 1.2 GM at some point... and a tilt shift!
Thanks! I am sure they will make some eventually. That is nice thing about competition, they keep pushing each other. Thankful for Sony in that regard!
I’m loving this channel 👍🏻
Thanks! I should have more up in the coming weeks! Going to wait till things green up a little :)
Thank you Shane, the exact video i was looking for specifically as you owned the other 85's. i current own the sigma 85/1.4 art and its heavier than a new born. IS i guess will be useful.

Glad it was helpful! It works even better on the R! The eye detection makes the AF hit so good!

I love the 35mm 1.4 II. You get what you pay for with that lens. Hoping that Canon comes out with an RF version soon!
Amazing picture, Shane! And amazing lens indeed! Thanks for the review!
Thanks! Hope it was helpful!

You do beautiful work, Shane! I wonder how the EF 85 1.4 on a R6 or R5 would work out? The RF85 1.2 would be too heavy and too pricey.
Thanks! Really appreciate that! I just did my review of the RF 85 1.2. With the adapter on the EF 85 1.4 the weight is basically the same and the length actually longer. Amazing lens. So now that you have the R5, does the IBIS nullify the in-lens IS for you, and what do you think of the RF 85 1.2 now?
Great question! I bought the RF85 1.2 and find that I get better IS results with the RF 85 on the R5 than I do with the EF 85 1.4 IS. Though both are incredible lenses, the 1.2 has a little better bokeh and sharpness! Review on it coming soon!

Thanks Darryl! Such a great lens!
Go for 1.8 if you at a reasonable distance 1.4 should be fine for tack sharp focus on your subject
Please compare it with the new Sigma 85mm DG DN Art lens. That would be cool! Plus, very nice video, Sir! ❤
I actually did when I first got it! Here you go! ruclips.net/video/3-6tLgTA2cQ/видео.html
Any chance for a comparison between this and the new RF 1.2?

For sure it is incredible on the 1DX. I bought the RF 85 1.2 now and it is also amazing!
I am confused between this lense and RF85 F2...RF85 F1.2 is way too expensive for me.
It's nice they there are different options so you can choose the one that is best for you!
I used to have the 85mm f1.4 which is a complete waste of money, I now have the 2 x f1.8 gold rings that are better value for money and you have change to get more gear.
can you give me your 85 1.4 pleeease 😊😁 i just started with 35 and still far off for that glass 😢

2:38 - your ears are on fire dude!
Haha!
Thank you for this interesting review !
You bet!
