It’s not just that sound,Hypnotize is the whole baseline of this song
Ten years earlier, Herb Alpert had another big hit with "This Guy's In Love With You". He had a lot of albums in the '60s, probably his most famous was Whipped Cream with the hit "A Taste Of Honey". Herb Alpert is the "A" in A & M Records. He helped many recording artists.
Facts
Herb Alpert also helped Karen Carpenter
Herb Alpert is the A in A&M records Janet’s label in the 80s
Explains the song “diamonds” which is credited as Herb Alpert but Janet Jackson is on vocals
In the 80's when MTV was actually a music channel that played music videos, making a music video was the best way to promote your song.He is sandwiched between Jay Z and Diddy as the 4th richest musician alive(850 M)
@@ragjamrock wow 4th richest musician
That woman dancing with Herb is singer Lani Hall. She was the lead vocalist for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. Check out "Mas Que Nada" and "The Fool n the Hill" music videos on RUclips. She also sang the theme song to the 1983 James Bond movie "Never Say Never Again".
If you want to look at what love looks like, watch their "Come What May" duet together. The way they look at each other esp. Lani. 😍 Beautiful couple! They've been married since 1973 and they're still together!
This record's beat is the foundation of Notorious B.I.G. "Hypnotized." RIP to the great Louis Johnson who played the immortal bass line.
Had no idea… Louis Johnson was everywhere!
This wasn’t Louis Johnson, it was Abe Loirel, a session bassist
ABRAHAM LABORIEL was the studio bassist!!!!!
Big hit when this came out, always played on the radio.
Brings back the Luke and Laura rape scene at the disco in general hospital. This song kept playing in that scene. 1979
Every time I hear this song it makes me think of Luke and Laura. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Just saw Herb Alpert and Lani Hall in concert in Beverly, MA at the Cabot a couple months ago.
I wanted to go…sold out too fast! 😁
Love this song and this sound. Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra: Love's Theme please!!🤟👍💥
I remember playing this song in the Jr high s school band in the early 80's. I have always loved this song.
Nothing but smooth vibes. This song carries me away every time. I imagine driving top down in SoCal on a balmy night and everything alright.
That is his wife dancing with him. Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass! Jazz at it’s best! A love song 💖
I was waiting for that part when you woke up on the sampled part. There you go!
I hear this and all I can think of is riding in my moms Datsun, " Nissan before Nissan", for u youngsters... Anyway the lights wouldn't work when it rained, and it was brand new...Kinda cool for a 6 yr old..😂😂😂
the song, is a Masterpiece.
Ok wow thats where Puffy sampled this beat from for Biggies song " Hyptnotize" .
"Rise" was one of the first major hits that was recorded on a digital tape recorder. The 3M Digital Mastering System had just come out, and the technology was so new that they had to have engineers from the 3M Corporation during the recording sessions in case something went wrong!
Herb Alpert is in his mid 80's and still performs to sold-out crowds! That's his wife Lani Hall in the video... She sang in the group "Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66."
Hi JJ! This was the Love Anthem for Luke & Laura on "General Hospital", U slippin' on samples, Lol! Peace!
love anthem? it was the rape anthem
Actually it was the rape music of Luke and Laura
@@JamesJones-zq7pc Yes. And I've never been able to feel the same way about this song since then and I loved it before.
One of the most iconic songs ever.
Part of the soundtrack of my life. Playing on every beat box, on the hot streets of the Bronx of my childhood . Thank you.
Yeah, it was the first time in the song that the part you recognized played. I couldn't WAIT to see the look on your face when you finally got it!!
Similar grpove as funking for Jamaica, love the bass line. Listening to this December 2022.
It’s hard to believe that Herb Alpert is 86 years old now.
if you listen to Herb"s greatest hits album you realise how songs you have heard yet didn't know they were his has spanned decades. "Bravo"
Haven’t hear this in ages ✨👍🏿
This song takes me back to my teenage years when AM Radio had ALL THE BEST MUSIC in Southern California...and it never rained.(barely)
General Hospital. Luke and Laura. That is where I first heard this song. Pretty sure I should not have been watching GH at about 7 years old anyway...especially with how the song was used. But now - I associate it with the Notorious BIG...
Herb & Lani's such a cute couple.
I was waiting on your reaction when that break came up! LOLOLol!! Yep
Biggie did sample it.
It’s an instrumental. No vocals. Jazz
Always loved this song. My older brother would always blast it on his stereo or in his car back in the '80s lol. Loved that cool bassline and horn, and the cool details like the people partying in the background. I was pleasantly surprised when Biggie sampled it in the '90s.
I love the video too
Last year of junior high when this came out. It was a damn SMASH!!! My Aunt worked at A&M back when their old offices were on Highland Ave in LA. BTW…this was really a promo video and not a music video. The music vids hadn’t started yet. MTV would come out a few years later.
Puffy was the sample king in the 90's. That's how he made his fortune. But he did pay the artists he sampled and kept them relevant. Many of them were so to speak, has-been's until Puff started sampling their music. Hat's off to Puffy.
You have no idea how big Herb Alpert was even before this song got sampled. He has many hits.
@@craigreed1638 I know. I love his collabs with Janet Jackson. And although her move to Virgin was a good career move, I often wished she had stayed with Herb at A&M records.
@@jewelofaries he was big even before that
Yes this was the Jam back in the day 1979 - 1980 👍 😀
Great, Great Song! Culture fact...this was the song playing in the disco when Luke raped Laura on the soap opera General Hospital. Every time she had a flashback, this song would play. And yes, it is the original sample for Biggie. The 12 inch club version is 10 minutes long and you should hear it.
I remember the wedding and I was sophomore in HS.
LOL, I remember watching GH in those days and never knew what a cult moment it would be.
Love Herb Albert, but love his early stuff so much better; lonely bull LP being one of his best or taste of honey. But had to click in for Herb.
This really is an amazing song. The video quality may have gotten worse over time. I remember watching his constantly in the 2000s and it was perfect. Thank you so much for reacting❤
Maybe the video quality got worse over time but Rise definitely got better. Great song then, now, and 4ever. Great reaction!!
You really don't need the video to go with the song. It's all about the song anyway. You should check out Chuck Mangione "Feels So Good"
My boyfriend knows this song came before Hypnotize by Biggie that song came out in the 70s
Herb Alpert is a bit of a black hole in my musical knowledge. I do think he was very talented even if he gets a bit of flak for his Tijuana Brass stuff years earlier. (in relation to this song) He will probably be best known for helping to form A&M Records and his business acumen in the music industry.
Anywho, as to this song, it's a first time listen for me too. I feel like the overall sound is reminiscent of other songs of the era but what sets it apart is Alpert's trumpet playing. It's definitely a groovy song that makes one either take a long drive on a scenic highway or uh, go on a highway of a more carnal kind of you catch my drift LOL
similar feel to this track would be chuck mangione Feel So Good. this song takes me back to those simple times before the cd's, the pcs, cable tv, cordless phones.... Ha! IM FUCKING OLD.
Boy.. this is not just recorded song.
First off the meaning of this song is "life", simple as that.
The story behind the recording, the composer, the pure love shared in all the artists who did it.., it's so much behind the trayectory year after year... it's RATHER a miracle.....
amazing story.
My ultimate favourite instrumental ❤️
Hehe, I was laughing to myself, thinking, "Why hasn't Just picked up on the sampling for this song yet?" You're usually like right on top of that sort of thing. But I knew as soon as that break came in your were gonna make that famous "Oh, wait a minute!" face, and then know that it was from Biggie's Hypnotize. :D
Ah man I hoped the baseline would have given it away. It’s always fun hearing the origins of legendary songs. I’m diving deep into the crazy shit Daft Punk sampled to make their hit songs.
You might enjoy the band Chicago, as well as Leonid and Friends doing tributes to Chicago...
Great song 😀 very nostalgic of better times
His whole album North On South Street stays in my cd player! I just love Herb Alpert.
There is an extended version of this song.
Great song was sampled for notorious big hypnotized
3:42 the moment he figures it out...
This is one of the sexiest songs I have ever heard. LOVE it!
❤
Route 101, making love in the rain, diamonds , this guys in love, taste of honey, etc by herb Alpert
I remember hearing this in my moms car.
Sometimes videos distract from the actual songs. I always prefer straight audio.
Herb Alpert has some really great songs. Rotation and Route 101 are awesome.
I suspect the song is probably been sampled many times
VIVAT GENIALNY HERB
Wonderful memories 👍😎
Mad song !!!!!!!!! Badddddd !!!!!!!!
This song has been sampled a million times. It sounds good
You picked another great song love the video. keep em coming !!
Yes…puff sampled from this
We were all waiting for it. Lol.
Need to listen to Kenny G songbird great saxophone
Classic!!
Can't wait for you to get around to my video request 😂😂😂
Ah yes classic despite of the quality
Do La the darkman America's nightmare 1 of the hardest song ever and ice cube ghetto vet 2nd hardest rap songs ever guaranteed

Surprised it took you that long to pick up on that sample... you slippin' bro... just kiddin' keep up the good work! Check out his work w/ Jam & Lewis & Janet
lol!
Avgggghhhhh!!!! 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
Biggie Biggie Biggie can’t you see
Sampled a bunch of times! For those that remember.
Buena melodía 👍🎶❤
Honestly on this end it's not that great but it may just be me😒 I did look online and there are a lot of other versions
Rappers always steal music. All the way back to Sugar Hill gang.
