  • Movie Studio is Dead: Rest in Peace you Glorious Software This is what happened to Movie Studio, Why Vegas Ended support, what Magix is Selling as Movie Studio 18 and more.
    Quick Mythbusting Breakdown about all the juicy VEGAS gossip lately.
    Myth 1. "Magix killed movie studio"
    Vegas creative software themselves decided to retire the Movie Studio line so they could spend more time making Vegas Pro as great as it can be. It was a very calculated decision that they made with a heavy heart. Magix actually wanted them to continue to produce Movie Studio, but there's a manpower issue that couldn't be resolved.
    Myth 2. "Magix is going to kill Vegas Pro next."
    Like I said above, the whole point of getting rid of movie studio is to help the VEGAS team spend more time on VEGAS Pro. The team is excited about VP19 and I will be reviewing it. The VEGAS team is excited about the future of VEGAS Pro. I've also been assured that VEGAS Pro is a very important software to Magix.
    Myth 3. "Now I have to upgrade"
    You don't have to upgrade to VEGAS Pro or Movie Studio 18 until you feel the time is right, which could be years from now. Vegas Pro is my official recommendation and I will continue tutorials for Vegas Pro, Vegas Post, and other related software. I, as of now, will not be covering the new Movie Studio 18. For a select few, It may be a better fit for you than pro, but I highly recommend using the free trail first. Movie Studio 18 does carry some design philosophy of VEGAS and Magix like the drag and drop style, but it is a different software than Movie Studio 17

    It's the right price; it's really powerful; it's ahead of the game sometimes.

    I've been doing video production since middle school, and in Highschool I started using Movie Studios to edit with. I went to College for Video Production Tech and weren’t happy with the “industry standard” editors I used there. I’ve used VEGAS ever since.

    Movie Studio 17 was a $60 one time fee, leverages the GPU for edits and rendering, can handle 4k clips and has the fastest editing of any software I've tried. It's not as feature rich as FCP or Resolve, but I loved the way the timeline worked. It really was an under rated piece of software and it's what got me started with video editing.

    Yeah, it was a bit sloppy of Magix to slide the 18 in there. They should have introduced the studio line replacement without the ambiguity. Thanks for the clarification regarding Pro and sorry to hear about your dog. Take care!

    I went through this several months ago, ended up finding the old build on a Vegas user group. Now that Windows 10 is in version 21H2, which broke a couple of other programs, Movie Studio 17 Platinum isn’t loading any files. Crap. If I’m going to have to learn a new interface, it will NOT be anything sold by Magix.

    Thank you for clearing up the difference between Vegas Pro and Magix 18. I bought Magix 18 and It took me a while to figure out things that I already knew how to do. Today I found a huge bug in Magix 18. I was compressing a number of scenes to make the cars look like they were going faster. Pretty much any compression over 1.5 fails misurablly to be smooth. Even after applying smoothing the software sucks. So I went back to Studio 16 and compressed the scenes that I wanted to use. then I made an MP4 file with those scenes. Now I can bring it back into Magix 18 and stretch the scenes to become slower and they stay smooth.
    This is a huge issue for me. I will be looking into Vegas Pro now that I know the difference.
    One question Can movie files from Studio 16 & 17 be read by The latest version of Vegas Pro?

    Aloha Adam...
    I was expecting it for a couple years for the lack of coverage by Vegas...
    I have owned a version of Vegas since v. 4.0... and would normally skip a generation and upgrade to every even version and skip the odd versions... I'm now on Vegas PRO v. 18...
    * * *
    I came over from the old Casablanca hardware video editing from another German video company... buying a new computer when a new version comes out grew old very fast. Vegas was a grand software package back then and I created many a DVD project with it through the years.
    * * *
    Thanks for the update... and the encouragement ... I agreed... keep the faith... your Vegas video editor will work faithfully for years before an upgrade is necessary... I've lived it.
    * * *
    I just came to visit your Star Wars crawling text tutorial... one of my specialty VFX companies had one with no control over the line breaks... not fun.
    I thought Vegas would have a way to create it... and you demonstrated it quite well.
    Good job, Adam.
    * * *
    I'm really saddened about the dog... we've had dogs in the house almost my entire adult life and know how difficult it is to endure such a loss. Our prayers are with you.
    * * *
    Until that time...

    F me...that explains why when I finally caved, upgraded my Vegas Movie Studio 14, and installed it, it opened with an entirely different user interface. I just assumed they had totally revamped the UI, not stealthily replaced the actual software. Have no interest in re-learning a basic video editing package. Might as well upgrade to Vegas Pro. Damn, that pisses me off.
    Thanks much for the scoop though...I very much appreciate you taking the time to share some of the background.

    Well Crikey! I had filled out my CC data, was about to hit the purchase button, and thought--- well, let me just look to make sure it has this one specific feature. Glad you posted this, I would not have been pleased. Albeit, I'm still displeased, because I was looking forward to 1/8th slowmo (finally an easy way to edit 240FPS GoPro) and 8K support (will be nabbing an R5 soon). Definitely don't want to pay $450 for Vegas Pro (I'm too amateur). Albeit my usage of video editing software is so sporadic that I'm not sure I want to subscribe to get Premiere, either. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and learn the new GUI of "Movie Studio". Hmmmm...

    What a mess! I've been using MS15 for years. I briefly upgraded to MS16, but never got on with it - didn't like the storyboard importing thing, and it kept freezing up on me, so went back to 15. Just out of curiosity this evening I downloaded a trial of Movie Studio 2022, and now they've REALLY messed it up. Couldn't find any of the stuff I was looking for - where's the media bins? How do you view the audio waveforms for video tracks on the timeline? All basic stuff that we all need, and if it's still there it's well hidden away. Looks like I'll be relying on good ol' Movie Studio 15 for a few years yet.

Is this change on layout what you've been talking about here in this video. It's like it doesn't even look right. Is there a way to get refunded or am I out $60 bucks. Your thoughts? Wish I would have found this video before I purchased it. Also, what do I upgrade to if I'm going from Movie studio 13.0? Is there a vegas option out there that is similar in layout. Hey Adam, just discovered your video on Vegas. I have been a long time user ( movie Studio Platinum 14) being the latest version I have. Went to Best Buy and purchased what I thought was the latest version, and wow I was surprised when I installed the software. I was like what is this? Total mis-direction with the packaging looking like it was the
    the original movie studio / Vegas software we all are use to using. Shame on Magix ! Luckily , I was able to return it and un-installing ......absolutely horrible !
    I originally purchased it so I could upgrade and finally put it on a windows 10 machine. So here is my question and hopefully you, or someone reading the comments can help. 1.) Is it possible to get the latest version of Platinum Studio somewhere? 2.) My second question is, can you use a USB Mixer or Interface with the audio recording? I know you can use a USB microphone, I have a DAW and interface set up on my windows 10 machine. I was hoping not to have to use two separate programs for my video and audio, and Vegas has enough audio editing that for simple guitar videos I make, Vegas by itself would do the trick. Any information would be great...thanks !

    Good information. I want to like Vegas Pro but it's so counterintuitive compared to what I started with and still use, that even trying to create a starting point template has been a major clock-eater that ultimately produces no workable end result. In my current program, you hit "record" and the capture window comes up complete with real time preview choices for resolution, fps, aspect ratio, codec, and file type to be produced once you stop the recording process. It also allows you to fine tune your camera angle and the whole set of visual tweaks as well as all audio routing BEFORE you commit precious time recording your takes.
    And while Vegas has a better set of audio VST plugins, I can unlink the audio file from the video in my old program, create a copy, and run that copy through Studio One 6 Pro and apply the best plugins from any audio company in the business.
    It's a frustrating situation.

    I have Movie Studio 15 on one Windows 7 computer, I need it on some other faster computers. I noticed Movie Studio 17 is still for sale on Amazon and Steam. I'm thinking I should grab a few copies while I still can, but it says Windows 10 as a System Requirement. Do you know why? Do you think it would work under Windows 7? I'm thinking I buy the Steam version, install it, and if it don't work, I've got like 14 days to get my money back as per Steam policies.
    Also, every video file I've created has bein in Sony Vegas 9 or mostly, Movie Studio 16.. and the file formats are not compatible. That's ok, my very old stuff was in Vegas 9 and is irrelevant. But if someday I was to jump over to Sony Vegas Professional, would it even be able to open and use the Sony Movie Studio 16 file formats.
    By differentiating and coming out with too high of a price tag, Vegas has created a clusterfwck. I don't need all the advanced features of Vegas... in fact, I prefer Movie Studio.

    Im not gonna lie here I appreciate Sony Vegas for what they had for a decade of using their software back from 2010. Started out with Vegas Pro 9 despite using a toaster laptop it helped my YT channel grow. My main issue however is that they were either lazy or money grabbing slow in upgrades which added little new features or they never fixed old issues. I think Magix Finally gave us what we wanted in terms of current GPU/4K support, but it still falls short in comparison to Davinci Resolve 17

    3:16. A little history on Vegas. Apologies if this has been covered before. As far as i know, the Vegas software was originally developed and sold by a company in Madison, Wisconsin known as Sonic Foundry. I believe they had other products as well. They were doing relatively well and their stock was valued about $75-$80 per share. I don't know what happened or why, but it started going foen sharply. It had a lot of little old ladies and little old men investment groups holding shares and they panicked snd the selloff was on. Sonic Foundry was swirling in the bowl and stock price was less than ten cents a share. Then Sony stepped in snd bought it. The price shot up to near previous levels overnight, but most of those groups were broke. Those who were willing to bet a grand on what very well could have been a loser, eon huge. I lodt track of what was going on after Sony bought them.

    Although I haven't used it in years, I had Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b, and It installs without issue on Windows 7 64-bit. But, in typical Sony style, they abandoned the plugin Cinescore Studio, which was GREAT. I still have the installer, but haven't tried it with more current versions of Windows. I am currently using (the less expensive) PowerDirector v15. I bought v16, but didn't like it as much. And, I absolutely avoid cloud based and subscription software from any provider.
    Subscription software is a sweetheart deal, for the providers, not the consumers! I have audio and video editing software that's 10+ years old and still works as intended, doing everything I need them to do. Subscription really gets my goat. It's as though I bought a nice new camera, but have to pay monthly/annually in order to keep using it.
    In fact, that's a primary reason that my OS is Win7 64-bit. My old software is incompatible, cost a small fortune, and I'm still waiting for Microsoft to release a better OS than Win7.

They could have named it differently. This feels like cheating. It feels wrong.
    Maybe there is a bright side for a little while and they offer an even cheaper upgrade to pro or the whole suite.
    Question: Is Vegas Pro Suite worth it? I have Vegas Pro Edit and did not go for the suite and get upgrade offers all the time. I can not find any valuable reviews of the content of Suite. Is this worth it? I have photoshop at the moment but depending on my job, it could go away and I can not afford $25/month or what it is by myself.
