Bakhtin was not a proponent of formalist method (formalism) but a proponent of dialogic method, which strongly opposed seeing text as a pure "activity" of devices. He and Medvedev were a harsh critics of Russian formalism: "Its better to value a good enemy (formalism) than a weak ally."
@@upgradedlifestyle Bakhtin was never asociated with Russian formalists. In 1922, when Viktor Shklovskys Theory of Prose came out, trying to separate literary scholarship from philosophy (symbolist criticism) and historicism, Bakhtin is concerned with Neo-Kantianism and writes philosophical essays and later synthesizes historical approach with poetics- his work opposes formalism from the very start. While Formalists were very well known, Bakhtin was a very marginal and unkwnown writer at the time. Formalists were working at Petersburg (OPOYAZ) and Moscow, Bakhtin was never allowed to officially teach/work there due to his exile. With Sklovsky he met only at the end of his life, because they lived a couple of streets from each other :) Sklovsky mocked Bakhtin for his religiousness, as formalists were atheists and Bakhtin was strongly influenced by religious philosophy- from the very start of his career.

That's why he distanced himself from the Russian Formalists and became their critic.

But I like your video :) its just that Bakhtins asociation with Formalism is a common myth outside of Russian-speaking world :)
