I don’t s agree with everything Shane did but when I was a teenager I literally laughed at everything on his channel. Now being an adult I’m like I can’t believe I used to watch it but still I agree with tana it was a different time. Different humor. Different comprehension.
I think it was more because we were dumb impressionable kids. I was in elementary school, of course we are going to assume the form of humor that we thought was cool to like.
One thing with Shane is that there were always so many people involved with making those videos; he had a producer and other RUclipsrs and family members help, even the mother of his cousin. And when it comes to Milly, I’m pretty sure the Fine Bros were the ones voicing the puppet… it’s kinda sad how so many ppl benefited from those videos and now act like they were never involved. I think it was really just a different time on RUclips that we should move on from.
I didn't think of it that way but yeah, he had so many people involved cheering him on and profiting off of his videos as well. Not only were they not against any of it but were probably super supportive along with all the young people watching and loving the conent. It doesn't excuse everything that he did, but it offers a lot of context into the world that he lived in at the time and the world we as young viewers were brought into and enjoyed.
It’s kinda annoying how when someone is innocent and you defend them, people say “how do you know? You weren’t there!” Yet with people who are guilty, people say “their friends, family & colleagues enabled and protected them! How did they not know? They definitely knew!” It’s just stupid.

I feel a lot of people and creators alike make the point that it was a different time, and so it was normal. It was different because the audience that discovered it were little kids, unsupervised, unregulated and exposed without any repercussions to the creators. Like I can speak for myself, I was 11 when we got our first computer, going to chars and watching a lot of messed up shit and my mom didn’t know any better. Now, I’m a parent and we know the dangers of the internet and the things that are on there and easily accessible. We have age restrictions, blocked websites and we also have Wi-Fi sync to our phone so when it’s bed time the house Wi-Fi is off so the kids can’t get up in the middle of the night to watch any that they don’t want us to watch. Brandon Rogers has been in the RUclips business as long as Shane. His humor is controversial, dark and raunchy, yet he’s in no drama because he does it the correct way and all his content is not for kids and he labels it in his channel and captions. We want creators to realize this. Most of the shit Shane has done that’s sexually inappropriate was outside of RUclips too.
Totally agree with the Brandon Rogers comparison. His humour is (imo) even darker than Shane's but he has no real controversies because he knows his audience and is respectful.
Unfortunately the internet was a different place.. 12-15 years ago. Nothing was censored, nothing was moderated. At least in my case, I was a traumatized child growing up with traumatized adults,, and pervs.
Exactly, i think unlike Brandon, Shane's main appeal switched from comedy sketches to publicising every aspect of his life. And that made him interact with fans and even people he knew on a very dangerous level.
It was a different time, not just because of our age. Even though parents today know more about the internet, kids have even more access to content now with social media and smart phones that are hard for parents to control, but the platfroms have gotten better at ristricting their content. Shane worked with a lot of people, from producers to actors to youtubers that were very supportive of his content, along with his viewers. There was no censorship, RUclips supported his content, which in 2023 would get immediately banned. Think of how we would watch South Park or Celebrity Death Match or American Pie after school. How the media talked about celebrities, shamed and sexualized women especially, stuff that even our parents consumed. That stuff wouldn't fly today and thats a good thing, but its not just because we were kids or our parents werent around. Media in general got away with a lot more problematic things that were normalized which empowered people like Shane to make that kind of content and become successful, not caring that the target audience were actual children. So yeah it was a different time even though it's still very necessary to be careful as a parent the way you are, since we know first hand the kind of stuff that can slip through the cracks of flawed restriction rules and a lot of companies will work with anyone and do anything as long as its profitable.

They were all grown men. It was a different time. Things that were accepted then aren’t anymore. He also disregarded the abuse that Jakes ex Alyssa endured from Jake. He made a video series with his “hater” Bobby Burns, manipulated and love bombed him, made him all these promises, gave him a spot on his channel, let his audience hate on Bobby and then abandoned him. When Eugenia Cooney was FRESH out of rehab, Shane brought her back into the spotlight, creating a false narrative that she was better and everything was great now. And of course that wasn’t true. He also made jokes about his own weight in that documentary. Like how tone deaf can you be? Collabing with Jeffree Star who is known to be a terrible person and making a sob story for him to excuse his behaviour. Conspiring to bring James Charles down. I know James Charles isn’t a good person either but the way him and Jeffree went behind the scenes to orchestrate his whole downfall is extremely calculated and scary. Treating his friends like shit, namely Garrett who is the purest and nicest person ever. And just in general his documentary style videos were extremely manipulative and a way of fulfilling some narcissistic saviour complex. Like, maybe he had changed from all the really terrible shit from years ago, but he was still doing terrible stuff in real time, it just wasn’t as blatant and was disguised as him doing good. I don’t wish him any ill will and I’m glad he’s doing ok, but his content was extremely harmful in my opinion. His best content was before he started doing documentary style videos, where he’d make conspiracy theory videos and do scary ghost hunting type videos with Garrett and Drew. It's seems without fail that a point is always lost when talking about Shane after his 2020 cancellation - the reason all his old content came back up was because of his association with J* and the drama surrounding JC and Tati. J* has a racist history, their makeup/documentary and surrounding issues fanned the flames (+ with the summer of BLM protests) and brought up issues with their current and past poor behaviors. And my goodness, Shane's IG live and messed up and that's when he went silent for months after that. The personas or masks that both he and J* created, fell off. It's a whole timeline, but everyone always loses track and goes with "some jokes from over 10 years ago".
Ive watched Shane since I was 14, I'm now 26. Even back then the whole Mandy era made me feel so uncomfortable. Shane has lots of childhood trauma and made jokes out of it, as a coping mechanism. Which is understandable, but to say it was okay for the times to upload these vids for kids, is just not accurate. It was never okay, but allowed because it was the "internet" 🥴 and RUclips was still brand new. But I am thankful for his amazing growth, and all he's overcome. Change is possible, and he's proven that.

If I had to guess I’d say bc it seems like Shane and JC had very different intentions. Jc was trying to sexually exploit minors for his own personal pleasure. I didn't think of it that way but yeah, he had so many people involved cheering him on and profiting off of his videos as well. Not only were they not against any of it but were probably super supportive along with all the young people watching and loving the conent. It doesn't excuse everything that he did, but it offers a lot of context into the world that he lived in at the time and the world we as young viewers were brought into and enjoyed.

Now, I’m a parent and we know the dangers of the internet and the things that are on there and easily accessible. We have age restrictions, blocked websites and we also have Wi-Fi sync to our phone so when it’s bed time the house Wi-Fi is off so the kids can’t get up in the middle of the night to watch any that they don’t want us to watch.
Brandon Rogers has been in the RUclips business as long as Shane. His humor is controversial, dark and raunchy, yet he’s in no drama because he does it the correct way and all his content is not for kids and he labels it in his channel and captions.
We want creators to realize this. Most of the shit Shane has done that’s sexually inappropriate was outside of RUclips too.

Exactly, i think unlike Brandon, Shane's main appeal switched from comedy sketches to publicising every aspect of his life. And that made him interact with fans and even people he knew on a very dangerous level.
It was a different time, not just because of our age. Even though parents today know more about the internet, kids have even more access to content now with social media and smart phones that are hard for parents to control, but the platfroms have gotten better at ristricting their content. Shane worked with a lot of people, from producers to actors to youtubers that were very supportive of his content, along with his viewers. There was no censorship, RUclips supported his content, which in 2023 would get immediately banned. Think of how we would watch South Park or Celebrity Death Match or American Pie after school. How the media talked about celebrities, shamed and sexualized women especially, stuff that even our parents consumed. That stuff wouldn't fly today and thats a good thing, but its not just because we were kids or our parents werent around. Media in general got away with a lot more problematic things that were normalized which empowered people like Shane to make that kind of content and become successful, not caring that the target audience were actual children. So yeah it was a different time even though it's still very necessary to be careful as a parent the way you are, since we know first hand the kind of stuff that can slip through the cracks of flawed restriction rules and a lot of companies will work with anyone and do anything as long as its profitable.

Ive watched Shane since I was 14, I'm now 26. Even back then the whole Mandy era made me feel so uncomfortable. Shane has lots of childhood trauma and made jokes out of it, as a coping mechanism. If I had to guess I’d say bc it seems like Shane and JC had very different intentions. Jc was trying to sexually exploit minors for his own personal pleasure.
