I like that orange 🍊 peel finish on the BP. Otherwise you will forever see all the Bondo Mess-ups. I’m going to use the same HF spray gun, can’t beat the price.
I’m a 60 year old Hobby Machinist. I wish I had a friend like Don. Don’t mess with my buddy! I would buy Don breakfast, lunch and dinner if he painted my BP. Even the drink 🍹 of his choice.. I have the same Sherwin Williams Industrial Enamel hs. The store rep told me to thin using Xylol.
Interesting as the tech guy at Sherwin Williams told me not to thin it at all, that’s why there’s no directions for thinning on the can? Anyway I read the label and it contains Naptha I figured a little more wouldn’t hurt lol
I have two Bridgeports, both work but really should go through a complete rebuild. I can’t do it myself and I’m getting quotes of around $9k each plus transportation! 😩
Most entertaining show on RUclips I picked up that angle grinder it does come in handy for a quick clean up I don’t need to turn on the air compressor for a small clean up And yes the batteries are very tight. And tell Don that’s I might pick up the cheap sprayer I like the disposable aspect of that saves time on clean up
Thanks Paul.. I have been thinking about playing around with the clips on those batteries... Sort of like a trigger job on a rifle.... there has to be a better way.... Of course the small batteries are a waste of time.. I have one bigger battery that has a wide base also, good for setting the tool on..
Steve and Don, that texture looks great.....almost like a powder coat..... .those Alykd pants tend to get that orange peel , especially when they they dry fast and do not flatten out. Sherwin Williams Commercial Coatings Division makes a product called Quick Dry Enamel....it is a solvent based paint that is used for industrial coating of machinery, I have shot many gallons of it. It is thinned with xylene, lacquer thinner, toluene, and even VMP......each solvent type has an effect on the drying rate. so if your temperature is low, you might go with the Lacquer Thinner or Toluene, if real hot, the VMP......it is very versatile and can be dry in 15 minutes if conditions are right. They also make a dulling agent that will give it a nice Matte look. the Code number is F77-xx for the Paint, the xx will be a code number denoting the color, like B for black, w for white, ect... I would spray with a gun like Don's, or when I was doing production painting of theater rigging or utility trailers at another shop, I used an Airless Graco set up. we would not clean the gun unless we were changing colors.....and at the one place, we only used matte black F77-B2.....we kept the gun sitting in a gallon can of xylene, and the paint was in the 5 gallon bucket it comes in, we only had a plastic top from a HomeDepot bucket with a cutout for the Airless Pump pickup hose....we only had to stir the paint a bit with a drill stir gizmo to get the dulling agent mixed as it would settle, .never in over a year did I ever have a problem......It is a great product for your type application, I do not recommend it for items that will be in the weather all the time, or submerged in water or chemicals, as I have seen it oxidize after a year or so. I hope you get a chance to try some out.......and it smells good too......so you might want to wear a respirator......I did when I was laying under a new trailer, cheers, Paul
This paint they actually recommend not to thin it. It uses Naptha as a carrier in the paint so that’s all you can use. It’s meant to be brushed on in a marine setting. I found out that I can thin it by adding a little more Naptha enough so I can spray it.
Another excellent video guys. Don looking for the lid for his paint cup so reminds me of a recurring situation I go through all day long. Great paint job Don.
The finish is beautiful, many thanks to Don’s skill with his special painting rig. Bridgeport never made one as pretty as this one will be when it’s finished.
I rarely tape what I am painting. Always takes more time and effort that it's worth. I'm not painting a show car, it's a metalworking machine! Here'a tip - for the flat areas like the chip guards for the knee - use scotch brite pads with a square sheet palm sander. It gives a much more consistent surface than the tiny pads on the die grinders.
10/4 on arthur and those catches, not being able to hold onto stuff, having 'dropsy' spells and get a fiver wheel if you don't have one and you can make mirrors out of those covers. Don sure can do some fine painting BUT go ahead and put the bell on the gate. That'll be a double whammy in alerting you and you'll know who is coming. GBWYall!
I greatly appreciate this series as I am about to start the process on a 68 series 1 bridgeport. I will not be spending as much as you have but I fear I might!
I prefer a smoother finish, that looks like an orange peel finish, not sure if because of thinner evaporating too fast or how it was applied, weather etc. With oil based paint I add a dash of penetrol, it slows drying a tad and helps the paint flatten out for a high gloss smooooth finish.
Can’t add penetrol to this paint, it’s an industrial paint that uses Naptha. It actually rained a little on it. It was very Humid.Actually Sherwin Williams said not to add anything to this paint but since it uses Naptha as a carrier in the paint already I use it to thin a bit.
@@donmadere4237 While I have never used that paint, I've used penetrol with other oil based alkyd enamels without a problem. Seems most paints say not to thin them too, but you can't spray them without thinning them either, so......

Steve, I wonder if you could set up one of those scotch-brite pads on a drill press with a small jig and do an ersatz “Engine Turned” finish like the old show car dashboards.
Where I worked as a Paramedic would rebuild the ambulance boxes and put them on new chassis They used to do that finish on some of the interior surfaces... Was a PITA to clean....
You can do that on a drill press or Bridgeport. I used a 1/2 inch wooden dowel with a leather pad glued on the end. Spread a light coat of very fine compound on the surface. Touch rotating pad to the surface a few seconds to get the finish you want. Go in a straight line and overlap each circle about 1/3. Takes some practice but if done right you’ll get parallel rows of small jeweled circles. Good luck.
I just fix'em Don't paint them :) Oh and on your comment about putting it in the oven.... The oven is just a little small for easily getting that 4 foot long part in and I have found that when stress reliving cast iron you always end up with some sort of twist... I'll stick with the way I've always done it as It keeps the side relationships all ok and just trues up the bow...
Always spray your edges first. Paint was to thick and naptha evaporates to fast, try acrylic or urethane enamel reducer. Acralon is a superior paint to most any finish you can use on a machine, its two part, cheaper then Polane and harder.
