Yep, once you put a spell on the stack you actually just declare your intentions to cast it and therefore can still use mana abilities, it's not a commonly useful rule but it's very relevant with carde like alter and kci.
Combo is unfortunately so often so painful to play in arena. God forbid the opponent has some game actions they're able to take that hold priority. I don't know how they could create a system where you demonstrate a loop and it just does it for you automatically, but I really wish they would try.
@42:25 you encountered the game mechanic of "intent to cast". you can put your spell on the stack before you pay the mana. For example, that's how you can almost always turn 0/turn 1 Emry with the right combination of 0 mana artifacts and 1 or no lands. God forbid you open blue layline... lols
@@Rihitu-ji7pi It absolutely is. For a more in depth example of what they're talking about with Emry, imagine the world where your opening hand is Island, Lotus Petal, Emry. You play the Island and the Petal, then you cast Emry. As part of that cast, Emry goes on the stack, and we work out the costs - 1U because of her ability - and lock it in. That cost remains even as we sac Petal for one of those mana. In the Gandalf case, you put the spell on the stack, then you pay the costs, and if you have a mana ability that sacrifices Gandalf, that's okay, because you already locked in that the spell is on the stack.
@@Rihitu-ji7piwhen going through the steps to cast a spell, there a legality check to see if it’s legal. At this time it is because Gandalf is in play and his ability to “cast as though it had flash” is allowing it to be legally cast since this step occurs before we activate mana abilities like Alter.
@@Kestral287 Interesting. I didn’t realize you could activate a mana ability and pay the mana to cast a spell simultaneously. I always thought you had to add the mana first, and only once you had enough mana in your mana pool you could cast the spell.
0:55 all 3 teshar players will be furious about this statement once they are done winning the game with their 2 and a half hour storm turn slowly turning into a loop to eventually win the game by milling a single card every iteration of the 7 game action loop.
In that first game I believe if you would have re-cast Loran instead of the Palantir you would have had the 1 mana open to go off with Paradox Engine + Curse. What a close one!

Found you from Rarrens Hearthstone Channel 😄 Funny Video you two made trying to Guess if Cards were Good or Bad :P Magic’s been a bit more complex than Pokémon & Hearthstone, but I’d like to understand it more someday! *Subscribed* Thanks for Breaking Down some of the Roles and Functions of this Game & Cards! I can see how it’d get Repetitive after a while :P
I honestly feel like Gandalf the White is both flavorful and a missed opportunity at the same time. For once, him being "The White" is really cool, but him not being able to somehow counter spells or return them to hand when in stack feel like a missed opportunity on the "you shall not cast" line.
It’s actually “you shall not pass” because he gives everything flash so when the opponent tries to pass the turn you just pop off and win the game instead
The ring doesn't protect from everything. Poison still works any sorce but creature attacks. I've taken damage from a saga, a couple different instants and sorcery spells. So either its broken or needs to be more clear
The ring will give you (the player) the ability "Protection from Everything" until your next turn, but only if you cast it. That means that damage from every source to you is prevented, and you can't be the target of any spells or abilities until your next turn starts. There are ways around this. If you make it do that damage can't be prevented; targeting a creature with the Stomp adventure on Bonecrusher Giant, for example, will make your creatures and your effects that damage each opponent (not the ones that target though) still do damage to an opponent with "Protection from Everything" because that damage would be prevented by that effect, but then Stomp made it so that damage can't be prevented. 'Can't' always wins in magic rulings, and the opponent will still lose life equal to the damage done. Might something like that have happened to you? Or did you maybe cheat it in play without casting it, like CovertGoBlue does in this video with Oswald Fiddlebender? That might explain how you still took damage while you thought you should be protected.
In the game against Tezzeret, you actually didn't have protection from everything, as The Ring wasn't cast.
I said that to myself when I saw it. Didn't really matter with the scoop, but still, he wasn't as invulnerable as he thought.
@@BlackHeartsHope Kind of like Sauron, when you think about it. :)
@@Wolfeson28 Sauron also gives you protection from everything? Need to check that card out.
@@Lordidude Lol, no. I meant the part about "he wasn't as invulnerable as he thought" was pretty much like Sauron in the actual stories.

Came here to say exactly this.
My first time playing CGB! Too bad I made a few embarrassing misplays. Guess that's what happens when you are star-struck (I was Ognis).
Here's to many more, gl out there
Cool deck!
At 41:50 im pretty sure you could cast the card and sac gandalf as it's a mana ability. You figured it out after too

Thanks for the match CGB, it was an honor. I was the Smeagol deck
Good gameses. Thank YOU for sticking around when the nonsense commenced!
@@thrillhouse4151 not a problem. I enjoy his content to the fullest. I had a feeling I was gonna get laser beamed, lol.

I'm building mono-white control with Gandalf the White in commander. There are many fates worse than death that I can inflict upon my opponents.
I've been seeing Galadriel pop off on the opposite end lately. Would be interesting to see a Scryfall deck! (Scry, landfall)
Love the thumbnail on this one in particular 🤣
This version of Gandalf looks like Santa Klaus in white costume...
Smeagol losing to the One Ring was only fitting. Lol
