this was - tactically speaking - very bad from Dima. Especially the first set. He just attacked Harimotos bh. Never changed place, nor angle, nor spin. Well, in a purely quickness based game, the shorter players mostly win. Moral of the story, mix up placement, pace, spin and angles, especially if you're relatively tall like Dima or Franz. Both these germans have much longer arms compaired to asian guys, thus its easier to create angles. But thats just one way to approach it. Players like Boll do it more with placement and spin variations.

damn I never thought about it this way (height related to quickness)

@@ludovictn a shorter height (arms and legs) results in a quicker movement arc, this is true for the core body as well, resulting in a powerful forehand
compared to taller guys, which has an advantage of longer arms and legs (reach) but slower body, they have a more powerful backhand usually
this is due to the movement of the backhand only needing the arm and core movement really, so a longer arm creates more velocity at the end of the racket, meaning more power and spin
while the forehand technique requires more quickness of the body (backs, arm, legs and core) to get more power and spin out of the movement of the forehand technique
albeit these advantages (quickness of shorter players or reach of taller players) really do not decide matches, as both also have it's disadvantages
the biggest disadvantage in my opinion is from taller guys, the longer the arm and body is, the bigger the middle between your fore and backhand is, resulting in your opponent placing the ball in the awkward middle where you can't really do back or forehand in perfection
you will see Groth suffering from this the most, and Harimoto knows really well how to exploit it from taller guys
also, taller guys have to bend down more, resulting in more overall pain in the body
anyway you will have Koki Niwa (162 cm) and Dima (182 cm) playing really well, as long as you know your and your opponent's disadvantages and advantages, you have to exploit them for your good

We should also consider that Harimoto has become more stable and consistent. He has a decent block compared to a younger version of himself. Having a defensive weapon makes you more confident since you can trick your opponent into making unforced errors.

Who says taller players get better angles? That's not true. They are better from mid distance but it's easier to create angles playing close to the table.
Ovtcharov obviously has the short forehand weakness that gets picked and his forehand-backhand transitions are very slow because he changes the grip too much like all German players.

It isn't true that Dima didn't mix up his placement or angle, but he is definately slower than Harimoto. He should have played more to his forehand aswell, but yeah pretty devastating loss for Dima.😢Good luck to Tomokazu!👏🏓

    who do you like more?
the one making noise while playing?
or the one making noise after a point?
or do you hate both? 😂

Dima beat himself. He overplayed and had too many unnecessary errors trying for a quick win😢

Amazing skills by these two, interesting watch. Congrats to Harimoto. Not sure how many friends you make on the tour when you scream EVERY time you win a point, that's no particularly good sportsmanship and in most sports there would be pressure by the fans, the league, and other players to knock that off. On a particularly spectacular point or when you win a game, sure, tennis players do that.

If someone shouting/ screaming after the point, why should it bother you.
If that is the issue, that opponent(s) has a weak mind/ game.
