The main reason why Sung jin woo was chosen was because of his persistence to survive in the face of death.

Originally, Ashborn was just looking for a body to take over. The plan was to gradually adapt the new body to accept Ashborn's full power. But after living in Sung Jin Woo's mind and memories, he decided to make him his successor, thus betraying the Architect.
Continuing the above statement:
The Architect did not agree and wanted to destroy Jin due to the broken promise between Ashborne and the Architect. Because Architect wantwd to be given a reward, sorta like power from Ashborne while Ashborne wanted a new "body".
Instead, Ashborne grew fond of Jin, due to his great and often stupid tendencies to go into Dungeons that even HE couldnt survive. Which in turn brought him as close to death as possible.
So Ashborne gave him an option:
Die now. And live in this Illusionary World.
Or
Take over his powers and become the new Shadow Monarch.
Why? Because Ashborne had had enough of wars and killings and wanted to rest. Eternally.
Jin wanted power. Not ONLY to kill the Monarchs. But to allow Ashborne rest. He also wanted powers to protect his family. And he decided to choose to become the Next Shadow Monarch.
Remember when Ashborne smiled at him. In the LN, Ashborne said "Thank you."
And Jin replied with, "Rest well."
It was a subtle but very profound way Jin showed his respect.

See, in the novel he is the shadow monarch. Its not that he's a successor but that he's kind like a pseudo reincarnation of him. The architect wanted jin to be consumed by his power and go back to his old self, but Instead he merged with his old self and gains his old memories while still being jin woo. Not really, i just reread it and what i understand is that they were 2 different people and ashborne decided to give all his powers to jin woo because ashborne was tired/didnt wan to fight anymore(you can kind of say he's a sucessor) instead of reincarnation

They did do justice of it. They just didn't show the epilogue chapters. I saw on the manhwa I was reading it from that they're gonna make the chapters for those epilogue but the due date has passed and I don't think they will do it anymore since the one who makes the illustration died
manhwa ending is so rushed. They could have added ten or more chapters to show his journey afterward.

The reason why Ashborn chose Jin woo was cause he was alway closest to death while always being able to survive
He had so many near death experiences as a hunter... Despite all the struggles, his weakness and lack of skills, he persisted and survived. He could have died -- but he stayed alive. He conquered death... He deserved to be chosen by Ashborn. As what the other rulers said, he is ashborn and ashborn is him. Their souls are one as a monarch.
*****THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT*****
Ashborn was originally just looking for a vessel he could take over like the other monarchs because he and the dragon king both were too powerful to just pick anybody. Before Jinwoo got the system Ashborn was watching him and his constant struggle as the weakest E-rank to stay alive always skirting the edge of death and persisting. Then after Jinwoo got the system and Ashborn watched him grow he came to like Jinwoo. The second time Jinwoo went to the Cartenon temple was supposed to be when Ashborn took control of the body but instead Jinwoo just saw part of Ashborn’s past which is why the Architect freaked the fuck out when he realized it was Jinwoo in control of the body, plus Jinwoo got the black heart and the black heart was Ashborn’s way of making sure Jinwoo would actually become his successor or cementing the fact that Jinwoo was going to be his successor. So it seems that was when Ashborn really made his choice to have Jinwoo be an actual successor rather than just be a vessel.
Then, when Jinwoo died to the Beast and Frost Monarch, Ashborn gave him the choice to either stay in the death realm or go back. And by choosing to go back Jinwoo *really* became the shadow monarch, and it’s semi-implied it’s because Ashborn went into the eternal slumber that Jinwoo could fully take the mantle which is what lead to the Beast Monarch running away. And the phrasing of the scene where Jinwoo chooses (at least in the manhwa) almost implies that if Jinwoo had chosen to stay in the death realm Ashborn would have taken control of the body, not that it would have mattered too much since Jinwoo and Ashborn became “the same person” according to Ashborn. Ashborn even goes as far as to say that, “No matter who controls the body it won’t be strange because I am you, and you are me.” And Jinwoo doesn’t deny the statement and even says, “I know, I’m you after all.” when Ashborn is about to tell him how to return to life.
He was chosen because of his survivability. Ashborn was born a monarch. He knew nothing of facing adversity... until the other monarchs unified against him. He couldn't handle that challenge, so he wanted a successor capable of rising to the occasion. Only one who has faced many challenges far beyond their capabilities would have what it takes to face that challenge.
The main reason is because he had what most humans Lacked a strong mentality and he was always hanging unto his life.
S is kinda weird for me, because when I originally read this as a novel, it was my first ever light novel. It seemed so long at over 200 chapters, but over the past 5 years I've read tens of thousands of chapters, maybe close to a total of 70 or 80k, which I know is a lot but I read about a chapter in about 3-6 minutes, depending on the length. Just for some rough math, if I read for 8 hours a day, every day for 5 years, I could've read 146k chapters, and that's assuming that each chapter toom me 6 minutes on average, so I didn't actually read that much, but much more than most, at about 4 hours a day. The 3 longest of them that I've read to are ~ ch900 -the legendary mechanic; ch1100- reincarnated as an energy with a system; and ch800- lightning is the only way. Now it seems like a short story in comparison. I know I'm around the 500s for trash of the counts family as well. In total, I read a fuck ton and this was long and feels short In comparison.
Ashborn explain why he was chosen. Jin Woo has been close to death many of times and did not fear it. His will to fight and survive even in the face of death. Ashborn power is just that, death and controlling them. He needed the system to increase JinWoo strength so he could withstand it. They already tried it on other people but they died when gifted with Ashborn power. So the system was develop. They explain this toward the end.

Ashborn wanted a body strong enough to survive in the world without being held back and that was the original plan. Jin woo was chosen because of his many close calls with death. After watching Jin woo battle after getting the system he chose to let Jon woo take over his battle that he had done many times before.
That's how we got one more Masterpiece.
Not only that the Rulers failed to save earth like 8 times which means Jin Woo died every time in the same way in the double dungeon, and since monarchs can retain their memory after resets ashborn chose him

Ashborne was seeing him since past regressions, and when the 6th one happens he finally choose him, because of his qualities.

As we saw in one of the side story, Jin woo dreamt of him being on the Double dungeon (as he was at starting) but this time was controlled by Dragon monarch, so maybe it was some previous regression and at time Ashbore started observing him

in reality ashborn and kandiaru (the architect) started arguing and when he became the shadow monarch ashborn was supposed to take over sung's body but ashborn decided sung could become stronger than ashborn could ever become so ashborn ended up giving sung his powers without taking over his corpse when kandiaru tried to remove sung's powers through the system (cuz ashborn betrayed him) he failed because right before he could do it ashborn removed kandiaru's moderation powers in the system.
Honestly loved the manga but I feel them leaving out how the dungeons were other worlds is a missed opportunity. Still one hell of a story that actually has an end

Truth is stated at the end of the manga... Time kept getting reversed until it was jin woos time. And he is the first and only that had the good ending, and he chose to rewind time again to get the great/best ending
