In the water tribe battle, the spirit of the Ocean needed Aangs body to manifest, the water fish was actually The Ocean spirit using Aangs body to channel itself and get revenge for killing the moon spirit. Then when the Ocean saw the moon was there, he stopped.
Aang almost reached his higher self to become one with the universe but after losing his people he could not bare even the thought of letting go of Katara, but while in the state of higher consciousness he was able to see her in real danger…. He is not about to let that happened again. Toph hating not being able to see in the metal cage, contemplated what was said to her, “you may think you're the greatest earthbender in the world but even you can’t bend metal” was all she needed to hear.
