I have owned 3 Volvo S60's and have been rear ended twice in the past. On both occasions, my Car had no damage worth speaking of whilst the front of the offending cars were crumpled. Never underestimate a Volvo.
That bumper frame is literally two layers of 3mm steel hydroformed together. I was quite impressed when I took off the cover to upgrade my intercooler. At that rate you'd have to worry about the other car's fender or tire taking out your headlight moreso the bumper.
@@mgn567 it happened to me too. I hit the front tire and corner of a 2006 Altima doing 27mph and the only thing unaffected was the firewall on the altima. On my S60? The radiator cracked, the driver side frame rail compressed, the hood's leading edge got curled under itself, and the upper strut mounts got ripped apart. I literally broke the axles out of the Nissan's transmission. It was a bit comical. I tried to get my mom into an XC60 after that. 😂

For everyone saying «the crumple zone doesn’t work», the crumple zone is designed to crumple and absorb energy in bigger impacts, not at low speeds. The *BUMPER* was _LITERALLY_ made to handle *BUMPING* without damage, they were made to protect the car at low speed impacts (aka bumping). THAT IS WHY THEY WERE CALLED *BUMPERS*
Can confirm with my V70. Crashed a car that showed on the blind corner in the garage. No damage at all. There are special plastic joints that will give under stress if the option would be bumber cracking. Just have a couple in a glove box and replace them and you're good. They are cheap. Like penny-worth. Good guys volvo engineers.
Never really understood why companies don't use bumpers like this where it doesn't destroy the front end in a minor fender bender. At low speeds cars should be able to handle stuff shown in this test without crumpling in on itself like you just hit a brick wall going 90.

хорошая машина. у меня была 40ка, был удар сзади (очень ощутимый) в итоге бампер остался цел. только краска стала паутиной. и что интересно - эту паутину даже керхер не отбил. это действительно на совесть сделано
Вольво и после 10 хозяина при серьезном дтп жизнь спасет лучше чем новый мерседесь или бмв.самая безопасная машина в мире, поэтому даже очень старый вольво стоит очень дорого для своего года и запчасти и обслуживание.

я думал, что кузов/бампер еще должен "впитывать" силу удара, при этом деформируясь там, где это безопасно, оставляя пассажира и водителя невредимым. А здесь получается бампер целый, а водитель на капоте через лобовое стекло?

Every single bump is a brand new car, no data gain from two bumps on same bumper ! How many did they just say " it's not noticable, sell it " ? Did you end up with one?
bumpers are supposed to crumple to reduce the force of impact on the occupants. I cant imagine the back pain i would get after getting into an accident driving that car..

9ка уже не жигули, а лада!) жигули это только классика!) но на 9ке да.. шикарный бампер, причём восстанавливался! Товарищ снёс бмв какую-то старую... так, что она перевернулась! Был поврежден даже бампер на 9ке! Фары и тд... Ну сильный удар! Было тепло... Солнце нагрело бампер и он обратно выпрямился!)))
Actually you're 100% correct. I had a minor fender bender with barely any visible damage to the bumper and I had to replace : intercooler, radiator, fan shroud and a power steering line headlight bracket

The energy from a low impact frontal collision is first dissipated by the bumper cover and the plastic crush beam behind it, as the impact force increases the energy is then absorbed by the metal bumper beam and crush cans that attach it the front longitudinal members which also forms part of the energy absorbing front crumple zone.
@@piuthemagicman my car was made in simpler times, there was no worries about such mind bending speeds, maybe i could survive at 2 to 3 km/h, with a lot of fractured bones and cerebral damage, but never in such fastness to sudenly coming to a abrupt stop.

Doesnt matter at low speeds. The plastic bumber becomes meaningless in a real accident above 40-50 mph. In a real crash the crumple zones and airbags do all the work.

it happened to me not long ago, a hyundai SUV rear ended me, i was amazed that there was absolutely no damage on my car

I miss the old days when ALL cars had bumpers that would survive a 5mph impact with zero damage.
