We're doing tomatoes in containers (vs. the ground) for the first time this year. This information is invaluable as it gives me a real system that is not complicated and at minimal cost (relative to what some people recommend), plus it uses organic supplements. I'm following this. Thank you!
From watching your videos, I’ve finally found the best way to grow tomatoes. I’ve been through so many tomato videos and wasn’t confident enough and often bought items l didn’t need. Thank you so very much for your teaching ❤ I'm a Registered Nurse and growing veggies is such a stress relief and happiness for me. I had a green thumb in NC, but since we moved to Colorado Springs, not so much, lol. I will try your methods for sure!
Forgiven 212, thank you for your kind comment. It is very much appreciated. You still have a green thumb, but remember gardening at high altitudes is a complex process. High altitudes are usually low humidity regions. You need to water more. Also, you already know that your growing season is shorter so choose short season crops like Charantais melon over Hales Jumbo, OrangeGlo Watermelon over Georgia Rattlesnake, Bloomsdale Spinach, Fava Broad beans, DeCicco Broccoli over Broccoli Calabrese, red lettuces and Romaine lettuces and Asiatic and Oriental Lilies and daylilies. This is just a few suggestions. You will never lose your green thumb, but it might become a little paler until you get some experience with new meteorological conditions. Practice persistence and stay committed. There's soil under those nails of yours!

I spent probably over $50 last year on Home Depot Organic potting soil. (For a small garden Apx 12, 5 gallon buckets.) This video is already saving me money.
Good luck Jules. I hope you kept the original soil. You can always combine it with our soil mix. I would suggest in future years, as your pots lose some soil, replace the soil with this schedule: Year 1-manure, Year 2-manure, Year 3-soil mix. Repeat this on a 3-year schedule. Thank you for the comment.
@@harvestinghistoryllc3161 I don't throw anything out. I'll follow your additional instructions. And on a personal note. I did not have good luck with my garden last year. Yours showed me past the planting and how to fertilize every 2 weeks. That was missing firm the other videos I've watched. So I went right to Hone Depot. They had everything you suggested. I got it all inexpensively; except for the top soil which is free now. And planted all my tomatoes Saturday. Now I just need to water when needed and fertilize every 2 weeks. I finally feel like I know what I'm doing. Thank you for the excellent video.
In short this system works ! 2020 my first attempt at tomatoes in containers was a disaster ; blight , low yield you name it. Thank you Thank you!!!

Thank you for your video! I have just one question on the third component of the soil, since I am not native english speaker. Could you please spell it for me? Thanks.
@@katarinaklepacova2923 Peat moss was the third element. So 60% crummy garden soil or topsoil, 20% compost or dehydrated cow manure, and 20% peat moss.
When I started out in the work force (now retired) my boss gave me something that I lived by the rest of the way. He said that when writing instruction procedures (or telling) for someone, do them in the "See Dick or Jane Run" (very basic early grade school learning) method. Above all, do not leave out any step that you will assume that all to be instructed will automatically know. There are many RUclips videos on different subjects that use assumptions but they are not for the layman that wants to learn but are for the likewise RUclips instructor in knowledge. This lady does a great job in how the process is to be done in a basic step by step mode (not a look how smart I am mode).
Stan, I am humbled and grateful for your comment and that you took the time to post it here. I know the you were using the "Dick and Jane Mode" as a metaphor, but I loved the "Dick and Jane" series and read and re-read it many times. Your comment brought back sweet memories and I hope you understand how appreciative I am for your vote of confidence and for rekindling long forgotten, heartwarming experiences..

Two questions please. Where do you set the pot? on grass or soil and is my asphalt driveway or cement patio no good. I was told baking soda makes the tomatoes sweeter. A nice cheap additive to established plants. Thank you.
Michael, you can set the pots anywhere. For most of the 16 years we have been working on this container project (over 4200 plantings) our pots have been on asphalt. Remember, if you set them on soil or grass they will get weeds faster, so asphalt has its benefits. However, you will need to water more frequently. I don't know anything about baking soda. I checked my baking soda box and it told me that baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate. The chemical formula is NaHCO3.. Sodium Bicarbonate when added to the soil will increase the soil's alkalinity. Alkaline soil causes plants and their fruits to have a sweeter flavor. That is why so many gardeners add lime to their soil before planting in the spring. So maybe adding baking soda will make your tomatoes sweeter. BUT, please know that I really don't know anything about baking soda making tomatoes sweeter..

Good morning I have horse manure that’s about three years old would that constitute crummy backyard soil . My soil is nothing but dirt mixed with tons of rocks. Thank you for this video and easy to understand instructions
Judy, how lucky you are, but that will not constitute soil entirely. I would use 60& or 6 parts your horse manure and add 4 parts of your crummy soil, rocks and all. I've taught on part time basis at the elementary school, high school, junior college, and university level as well in industrial settings, and find your instruction method to be great for note taking accuracy. Best Regards,
Ellis, WOW, thank you for your comment. I am deeply touched. Also, thank you for taking your time to watch our Harvesting History video. I wish you much success this season. One suggestion that is not in the video. If you find the black plastic tubs, there is a company in Texas that produces the best tomato cage. The company is called Texas Tomato Cages. Their medium cage fits exactly in the 18-inch black plastic pot. Try googling them.
You are welcome. I did look into Texas Tomato Cages, and the smallest diameter I find is 24". I presume the cages would be placed over the potting containers and not into them. Is that correct?
Harvesting History LLC Hi Barbara, Now the medium/smallest gages are 20” diameter, and the are sold out anyway. We have some similar cages, so no problem. We planted our tomatoes & Ghost Pepper May 21 per your guidance, & all are doing just great. We’ll email you some photos at the appropriate time. Thanks again. Best Regards, Ellis Stewart
I think I could follow this but... do you have any advice or guidelines for watering the tomato plant? I think I might have a tendency to overwater or is there even such a thing as overwatering? Thank you! 💕
Lauretta, unless you live in Hardiness Zones 1-5, it is pretty hard to overwater tomatoes. In dry, hot conditions, water once a day. If you live in a rainy area or you are receiving rain on a regular basis like 3-4 ties a week, don't water at all. Never let the container stand in water. Hope this helps.
Harvesting History LLC I do live in Zone 5 but I am determined to grow veggies in containers so I am going with your method! Thanks so much for your quick response and helpful info! 💕🌸
Lynn, I am excited for you for growing the wonderful San Marzanos. Please, please roast some of these in your oven. Slice them lengthwise. Arrange them on a baking sheet that has been covered with foil and drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar into the cavities in the tomatoes. YUM!
Thank you for such an informative video. One question, can one also plant basil in the same pot with the tomato? I’ve been told that basil and marigolds are good companion plants.
Ana, Basil in the pot with the tomato is a wonderful combination. Don't bother with the marigolds. They have lost the fragrance they once had for deterring critters, but basil is an excellent companion plant for tomatoes.
Thank you for sharing, the best information about growing tomatoes in the southeast, the Cooper pesticide was the great information. I moved to South Carolina 3 years ago. I tried growing tomatoes. I got 2 good tomatoes. My plant was full of fruits, and those pesty bugs got into it and killed it. I try zucchini, squash, and cucumbers . The flower beautifully I can see the fruits I was so excited. But oh no, those slugs got in the vines and killed all my vegetable plants. Thank you for this valuable information to me.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! This is the best one I’ve seen yet about how to grow tomatoes! Very informative, no stories, just straight to the point. I like that! I have a question though: If I am doing drip irrigation, do I still put the ring of bone-meal or do I work it into the top of the soil? I assume the ring applies to a hose or watering can, but what about drip? This is my first time doing tomatoes because I feel they are too high-maintenance for me, but this year I’m giving it a go. And to be honest, that’s the only question I have because your video was *that* good! Thanks!

watched this video about three times writing down all info, i must say i love your teaching!
Gary, thank you so very much for your kind words. You have just made my day!
I am so impressed by how well I know now how to plant and take care of tomatoes. I don’t have any questions or doubts about anything. It’s because you explained everything so clearly. Thank you so much🤗
Gary, I have thought about you and your tomato growing experience this summer. How did you and the plants do?
How did growing go?
Thank you thank you thank you! Finally someone with a no nonsense video explaining in detail the How, What, Why, and When! Can't wait to review your website!
Thank you NurseKate and thank you for your service as a nurse. We need more nurses.

This lady is a Karen!
Nah, she has just encountered too many Millennials that try to correct her on what she knows far better than they! ;)

Happy Gardening, i wish you Well on this Fine Memorial Day !!
I have viewed multiple videos on tomatoes and started with garden club recommendation. This year I followed your recommendation. Best production of tomatoes I have had in the last six years. Following from now on!
She reminds me of the "church lady"! I love her!!!! Great teacher!
I'm a retired teacher and loved your presentation. You demonstrate true teaching! Thank you.
John,Thank you for your kind comment, but more importantly, thank you for your service to generations of our children.
We're doing tomatoes in containers (vs. the ground) for the first time this year. This information is invaluable as it gives me a real system that is not complicated and at minimal cost (relative to what some people recommend), plus it uses organic supplements. I'm following this. Thank you!
Learned the most from this. One eleven mins video packed with information only. Thank you
From watching your videos, I’ve finally found the best way to grow tomatoes. I’ve been through so many tomato videos and wasn’t confident enough and often bought items l didn’t need. Your instructions was simple and very encouraging. Thank you very much for letting everyone know your secrets…l’m now filled with confidence. This pandemic has really set me to Gardening and growing my own vegetables. Love you to the moon and back😁
Jose, thank you for the sweet comment. One great thing that came out of the pandemic is the growing interest in growing your own vegetables/flowers/herbs. Please stay interested in gardening and keep up the good work.

This is the most helpful, easy to understand, and enjoyable video to watch about container tomatoes I believe on all of RUclips..and I'm pretty sure I've watched them all lately. I finally feel like I'm confident in planting my tomatoes in a container instead of the ground! I truly believe she knows what she's talking about!

I watch it every year too. Proof is in the pudding.

I was having trouble finding affordable 18" planters until I realized I had some old beat up job site trash cans that were 18" in diameter. I cut them down to height and drilled a bunch of drain holes. They work great (I hope). Maybe I'll even paint them
You remind me of my 7th grade teacher Mrs Berger. A no nonsense teacher , but you could tell behind that shell she was a sweetheart. Thanks for an amazing tutorial.
My Dear Asher, Thank you for this kind, sweet comment. I hopw our videos will be helpful to you and that you will enjoy much success as a gardener. I am also grateful to your teacher Mrs Berger for being the kind of teacher that would leave a student with such a loving impression.
I love this lady I love the way she explain great job
Thank you, Jose, you sweet man. I love gardeners, especially ones like you.
Thank you! Millennial here. I've been growing tomatoes in the ground for 12 years, but my walnut trees' roots finally extended far enough out that their toxic juglone is reaching the tomato roots. I bought 25 gallon grow bags to grow indeterminate tomatoes this year, and I was actually thinking they might be TOO big. So, I'm going to plant a few flowers around each plant. Great video with tons of good info!
That's a really good idea!! There are a lot of flowers that are really great for deterring tomato specific pests!! Plus, it will draw in pollinators!! I specifically recommend sweet alyssum!!
Greg, try some herbs as well. Basil grows well with tomatoes and the two are great companion plants. If you want color, plant the purple basil.

I do have to say as me being a millennial I do not fall into the same category as the majority of them. I know you older generations seem to think we are a bunch of morons but not all of us are. Therefore very well explained video and always nice to hear some tips as I embark on container gardening. Thank you
Ben Ca, I know there are great, responsible millennials. My son and daughter are millennials and so are their spouses. My daughter, a trauma surgeon, has been on the frontline of this pandemic for months. You could not ask more of any generation than the sacrifices and extraordinary efforts so many people are providing. Thank you for your comment.
I am teaching myself and did a lot wrong. I'm a little late this season bc I didn't know how to love forward. - Until I found your video; (I've seen a lot of videos to no avail.) Yours showed me past the planting and how to fertilize every 2 weeks.
Bless your heart, Ma'am. Very informative, precise and to the point. Keep it coming please.. (need to see the results of your heirloom)
Jimmy, thank you for your comment. Try looking at some of our other videos. you may enjoy them as well.
In short this system works ! 2020 my first attempt at tomatoes in containers was a disaster ; blight , low yield you name it. No matter what I did; egg shells fertilizer . 2021 I followed this protocol to the letter and what a difference. Great yield , no blight , more than I can eat. I found this channel randomly . Thank you Thank you!!!
William, thank you, thank you for your comment and for taking the time to view our Harvesting History video. We are so happy that the method worked for you. It works for us also. Once again, thanks.
I love this video! I am not a millenial, but would have planted 5 plants in that sized pot if not told otherwise:)
Thank you for the comment. It warmed my heart to know that it helped you. Happy Thanksgiving and...Happy Tomato Gardening
Thank you for your video! I have just one question on the third component of the soil, since I am not native english speaker. Could you please spell it for me? Thanks.
5? I would have put twice that many in
Lol, me too!

You are a wonder full lady and i love all your videos i have a five hundred acre farm and are making use of your methods with a little changes here and there are having record braking harvests i thank you and may god bless you and your family

If you have the patience and time, try to remove some of the rocks, but you don't have to pick out every last rock. Thank you for your comment and for taking your time to watch our video.

Greetings,
This is a superb discussion on the subject. We are following this to a "T" this season. Fortunately, all the products mentioned are available locally here in Wisconsin. Thank you very much for sharing this information. A concur with the viewer who complimented you on your teaching style.
No, Ellis. They used to make a 'medium' cage that fit inside the pots. The 24 in cage is too large for the pots.
Harvesting History LLC
Hi Barbara,
Now the medium/smallest gages are 20” diameter, and the are sold out anyway. We have some similar cages, so no problem. We planted our tomatoes & Ghost Pepper May 21 per your guidance, & all are doing just great. We’ll email you some photos at the appropriate time. Thanks again.
Best Regards,
Ellis Stewart

Beginner here.Thank you very much for your no bs direct video. I will follow it to a t. I am excited for my San marzanos
Harvesting History LLC GREAT! Thank you for the prompt reply. I have my pots ready, and my Saturday is booked for planting tomatoes and basil.
Ana, what a great way to spend a Saturday. Happy Planting. Remember Stay Healthy, Garden Frequently.

Me Too, Miriamm!
You are very welcome. Glad we could be helpful.
Thanks!
Thank you for a very simple informative video it has been very helpful to me. I have been growing container tomatoes for years and reasonable success. But after watching your video several times I realise how poorly I have treated my plants 😩. I’m looking forward to trying your method thank you so much again. N. Ireland

You can also use dried eggshells for calcium, and they are free!
Crush the shells till they're almost a powder otherwise they take way to long to breakdown to be useful
