Koto Amatsukami is such a strong visual genjutsu, that only Shisui himself is able to use it to it’s full potential. Anyone else who posseses the eye, like for example with Kakashi, or Danzo, can’t completely use the eye like the original user, hence why Kakashi gets tired quickly when using it, and Danzo requires the First Hokage’s cells to continuously use it without tiring. This is the same genjutsu Danzo used at the Five Kage Summit to control Mifune into making him the Commander of the Allied Ninja Forces during the war, which where Ao recognized it, since he had previously fought Shisui long ago. The restrictions on Koto Amatsukami are simple: you can control somebody through it, without them noticing, but even Shisui himself cannot use it more than a certain amount of times withing another certain amount of time, which I don’t remember at the moment. But say it’s so strong he can only use it once a week or once a month, or so. So naturally, somebody else using it would be locked out of using it much longer, hence the decade. Itachi’s body is brought forth by the Reanimation Jutsu, where a catalyst body is used to house the soul of the person called back. The reanimated body in unkillabke unless they have a change of heart, which directly affects the soul, or sealing them. What Itachi did was not “break” the Reanimation Jutsu, but “re-direct it’s operational focus from what Kabuto’s intentions are, to what Koto Amatukami was previously set up to do once the genjutsu was activated, which is the orders to “protect the village”. At that point, because the reanimated body works with chakra, as well, the genjutsu is able to take control of that anchor point to inject the new orders into the body, hence not allowing Kabuto to do anything it, meaning the body technically “goes haywire”. The order in the genjutsu to protect the village does not affect Itachi like it would affect Sasuke, for example, because Itachi ALREADY wants to do everything to protect the village, therefore it’s almost the same as having free will.

The part with Nagato being caught off guard by Itachi is a little tricky to understand but it’s for 2 main reasons: 1) Itachi blinded all of the summons with his kunais so Nagato could only see what his own eyes can see, no broken vision 2) You have to keep in mind that Nagato, while extremely powerful, is still being controlled by Kabuto. Mentally, he has no urge/will to fight Naruto and the gang and even if he wanted to, Kabuto still controls his movements so he can’t even move on his own

CONTEXT: (NOT SPOILER) Kotoamatsukami is a Genjutsu that is used by Shisui and it is said to be the strongest genjutsu. It can manipulate and control people without them even realising it. Itachi programmed Shisui's eye to "Protect the hidden leaf" and planted it to Naruto if he happens to fight Sasuke to change sasuke's ways. But he never expected that he be using that to himself. That's why Kabuto cant control him anymore because Kotoamatsukami is stronger jutsu than Reanimation in terms of controlling people. To answer your question in the end, He's basically a Reanimated Shinobi that Kabuto can't control because he's under the genjutsu that he programmed.

Itachi is not playing chess, he is playing 5D chess, he and Minato are just that brilliant. I know Shikamaru is considered the most intelligent, but these two are on a whole different level. They figure everything out in seconds and plan decades in the future. So damn amazing.
Shikamaru and by extension his dad are like military intelligence, they can command a group of people using their strengths and weaknesses to come up with the best possible strategy against another equally equipped military. Itachi and Minato are individual intelligence where they fully understand their own abilities and the abilities of the individual they’re fighting and know how to exploit their weaknesses. That’s probably the key difference between them.

The massive explosion blinded and is a major distraction while all the summons eyes are already stabbed by kunais of Itachi. So it made perfect sense how Itachi blindside Nagato with the Susanoo blade. Especially with Totsuka Blade’s sealing properties. If Itachi didn’t interfere with his Susanoo earlier, Nagato would have solo’ed BOTH Naruto, Bee and captured them back to Kabuto. Chibaku Tensei is also really powerful and only destroyed by Itachi, Naruto and Bee. 3 very powerful Shinobi together. It’s a fitting loss for a powerful man.
I always knew Itachi was incredibly strong, but some people downplayed it, pointing out his tough fight with Sasuke. They seemed to forget that the writer specifically mentioned Itachi was sick, dying, and holding back to get Orochimaru out of Sasuke. This was the first time we really got to see his true OP skills. Even though he's still Edo Tensei, so not as strong as his original self, Forget the susano and kotoamasuki, it was amazing to see how easily Itachi avoided Bee's 8-sword attack, while even EMS Sasuke basically died and needed karin to revive hi,. Itachi and Minato are my favorite characters.
Itachi’s blade is way OP, but yes, it is a major writing flaw with how every time we see the blade being used is when an opponent gets stabbed without them doing anything to prevent themselves from getting stabbed. Just doesn’t justify the plot, characters will dodge a kunai but will stand still when a massive sword is thrusted at them.

one of the reasons itachi is so OP is his Yata Mirror and the Sword of Totsuka on top of all his other broken abilities. The shield reflects all damage and the sword is a one hit seal

Shisuis Mangekyou is so powerful that once used, it needs a decade to recharge. However, if you also have Hashirama cells, you don't need to wait a decade. That's the main reason why Danzo had implanted Hashirama cells, to use Shisuis power whenever he wants. Also, by using Shisuis eye, Itachi broke the control that Kabuto had on him.

Regarding the doubt of Itachi's return, it is simply because Kotoamatsukami (Shisui eye) is the most powerful genjutsu in the work, without it or without knowing the seals used for edo tensei (and the power needed to manage it), it would be impossible to get out of the enemy's control.
The best way to look at how Nagato got caught off guard, is looking at how a much weaker Naruto in the first pain fight, caught one of the pains “off guard”. He used a smokescreen (that blinds vision like the blast in this fight), distracted another pain, all to jump past the Yahiko pain and eliminate one of the pains with a double Rasengan. Please for the love of everything go back and watch it, because if anything he had more eyes to see back then and still got “caught off guard”. This makes it extremely dangerous and difficult to avoid, which explains why enemies feel threatened and tend to retreat when facing Shisui. However, Shisui himself rarely used this technique, and his story is more renowned for the immense power and influence he held in shinobi history. And of course, this is one of the reasons why Danzo stole his eyes.

Shisui's eye overpowered Kabuto's control over Itachi that's why he's no longer a puppet now. It broke the control over him but not the reanimation jutsu itself. That's why he's still there.

Even if he wasn't caught offguard, i dont think nagato can dodge anything because he is still crippled (kabuto even mention this which means he most likely saw the attack but cant dodge due to nagato's legs) and i dont know if he has the same cooldown as Tendo Pain to repel the sword even if he saw it, maybe he can absorb ninjutsu but totsuka balde being a spiritual blade is the perfect counter for him at this very moment, so basically the reason nagato and itachi paired up together and fought naruto and bee is to first get rid of nagato, that man is an absolute unit, had he been summoned anywhere else, the war would have been long lost
As for Nagato getting beaten easily, keep in mind he wasn't as strong as his original self. Naruto alone defeated him before, and that was pre-ninetail control Naruto. This time, it was ninetail-controlled Naruto with Bee who is stronger than sasuke at this point, but they were still essentially losing until Itachi showed up and demonstrated just how OP he really is. So, it took Naruto, who was stronger than when he fought and beat Pain, Bee-who at this time was still stronger than Sasuke and one of the strongest characters Kishimoto ever wrote AKA Itachi Uchiha to take down Pain. if you carefully itachi blocked all the rennigan with his kunai then attacked him susano, itachi is truly on another level.

It's not just that Nagato was caught off guard. His legs are crippled and he required Itachi's or one of his animal's help to move. His animals were taken care if by Itachi before he brought out of the Susano'o so there was no way Nagato could move that fast even if he sensed it.

Koto Amatsukami is such a strong visual genjutsu, that only Shisui himself is able to use it to it’s full potential. Anyone else who posseses the eye, like for example with Kakashi, or Danzo, can’t completely use the eye like the original user, hence why Kakashi gets tired quickly when using it, and Danzo requires the First Hokage’s cells to continuously use it without tiring. This is the same genjutsu Danzo used at the Five Kage Summit to control Mifune into making him the Commander of the Allied Ninja Forces during the war, which where Ao recognized it, since he had previously fought Shisui long ago. The restrictions on Koto Amatsukami are simple: you can control somebody through it, without them noticing, but even Shisui himself cannot use it more than a certain amount of times withing another certain amount of time, which I don’t remember at the moment. But say it’s so strong he can only use it once a week or once a month, or so. So naturally, somebody else using it would be locked out of using it much longer, hence the decade.
Itachi’s body is brought forth by the Reanimation Jutsu, where a catalyst body is used to house the soul of the person called back. The reanimated body in unkillabke unless they have a change of heart, which directly affects the soul, or sealing them. What Itachi did was not “break” the Reanimation Jutsu, but “re-direct it’s operational focus from what Kabuto’s intentions are, to what Koto Amatukami was previously set up to do once the genjutsu was activated, which is the orders to “protect the village”. At that point, because the reanimated body works with chakra, as well, the genjutsu is able to take control of that anchor point to inject the new orders into the body, hence not allowing Kabuto to do anything it, meaning the body technically “goes haywire”. The order in the genjutsu to protect the village does not affect Itachi like it would affect Sasuke, for example, because Itachi ALREADY wants to do everything to protect the village, therefore it’s almost the same as having free will.
Koto is not a visual genjutsu. Danzo even used it while the eye was bandaged. The visual part here was just itachi’s mechanism to activate the koto.

2) You have to keep in mind that Nagato, while extremely powerful, is still being controlled by Kabuto. Mentally, he has no urge/will to fight Naruto and the gang and even if he wanted to, Kabuto still controls his movements so he can’t even move on his own

CONTEXT: (NOT SPOILER)
Kotoamatsukami is a Genjutsu that is used by Shisui and it is said to be the strongest genjutsu. It can manipulate and control people without them even realising it. Itachi programmed Shisui's eye to "Protect the hidden leaf" and planted it to Naruto if he happens to fight Sasuke to change sasuke's ways. But he never expected that he be using that to himself. That's why Kabuto cant control him anymore because Kotoamatsukami is stronger jutsu than Reanimation in terms of controlling people.
To answer your question in the end, He's basically a Reanimated Shinobi that Kabuto can't control because he's under the genjutsu that he programmed.

Itachi is not playing chess, he is playing 5D chess, he and Minato are just that brilliant. I know Shikamaru is considered the most intelligent, but these two are on a whole different level. They figure everything out in seconds and plan decades in the future. So damn amazing.
Shikamaru and by extension his dad are like military intelligence, they can command a group of people using their strengths and weaknesses to come up with the best possible strategy against another equally equipped military.
Itachi and Minato are individual intelligence where they fully understand their own abilities and the abilities of the individual they’re fighting and know how to exploit their weaknesses. That’s probably the key difference between them.

So it made perfect sense how Itachi blindside Nagato with the Susanoo blade. Especially with Totsuka Blade’s sealing properties.
If Itachi didn’t interfere with his Susanoo earlier, Nagato would have solo’ed BOTH Naruto, Bee and captured them back to Kabuto.
Chibaku Tensei is also really powerful and only destroyed by Itachi, Naruto and Bee. 3 very powerful Shinobi together.

I always knew Itachi was incredibly strong, but some people downplayed it, pointing out his tough fight with Sasuke. They seemed to forget that the writer specifically mentioned Itachi was sick, dying, and holding back to get Orochimaru out of Sasuke. This was the first time we really got to see his true OP skills. Even though he's still Edo Tensei, so not as strong as his original self, Forget the susano and kotoamasuki, it was amazing to see how easily Itachi avoided Bee's 8-sword attack, while even EMS Sasuke basically died and needed karin to revive hi,. Itachi and Minato are my favorite characters.
Itachi’s blade is way OP, but yes, it is a major writing flaw with how every time we see the blade being used is when an opponent gets stabbed without them doing anything to prevent themselves from getting stabbed. Just doesn’t justify the plot, characters will dodge a kunai but will stand still when a massive sword is thrusted at them.

Regarding the doubt of Itachi's return, it is simply because Kotoamatsukami (Shisui eye) is the most powerful genjutsu in the work, without it or without knowing the seals used for edo tensei (and the power needed to manage it), it would be impossible to get out of the enemy's control.
The best way to look at how Nagato got caught off guard, is looking at how a much weaker Naruto in the first pain fight, caught one of the pains “off guard”. He used a smokescreen (that blinds vision like the blast in this fight), distracted another pain, all to jump past the Yahiko pain and eliminate one of the pains with a double Rasengan. Please for the love of everything go back and watch it, because if anything he had more eyes to see back then and still got “caught off guard”. As for Nagato getting beaten easily, keep in mind he wasn't as strong as his original self. Naruto alone defeated him before, and that was pre-ninetail control Naruto. This time, it was ninetail-controlled Naruto with Bee who is stronger than sasuke at this point, but they were still essentially losing until Itachi showed up and demonstrated just how OP he really is. So, it took Naruto, who was stronger than when he fought and beat Pain, Bee-who at this time was still stronger than Sasuke and one of the strongest characters Kishimoto ever wrote AKA Itachi Uchiha to take down Pain. if you carefully itachi blocked all the rennigan with his kunai then attacked him susano, itachi is truly on another level.

It was 2v1 (naruto+bee vs nagato), and then was a 3v1 to break chibaku tensei. But Itachi outplayed nagato like nothing cause he is smarter than nagato, and then, nagato couldnt do nothing against totsuka blade. edo itachi> edo nagato

Itachi is too good at distractions, that why he got him off guard . Also yes totsuka's deploying speed is super fast.
It's not just that Nagato was caught off guard. His legs are crippled and he required Itachi's or one of his animal's help to move. His animals were taken care if by Itachi before he brought out of the Susano'o so there was no way Nagato could move that fast even if he sensed it.
He just burned the crow with the eye alive. There's no more Shisui eye to worry about at all 😂
Now you can really understand why itachi is a fan favorite
