It's the coaches DECISION who to get in the final rounds of the contest. AND the coaches CHOSE James for Sebastian because they know Sebastian CAN perform TOE TO TOE with James. Sebastian is known for his difficult high notes. Check the part where James said something like "why did I write this high note" which Sebastian had no problem reaching.
