You cannot hold it with one hand, in this case your phaser will not work. There is a heat sensor under the phaser's front part, that must be covered with hand.

What I do is protect my sensers and to shoot everyone that I see until they are out of sight it works I got in the top 3 both times I played with this tactic

If the phaser is small why don't you just hold it in one hand? That way you can get closer to the wall so you aren't seen
