    just so you know, when you think they’re speaking in english, it’s technically still korean, some korean words are borrowed from english just like how english has words like deja vu and sabotage which are originally french words but we still consider them english!

  • @rose2654
    @rose2654 3 года назад +465

    They have loan words, they are borrowed English words but said with Korean pronunciation.
    Ex)
    택시 (taek-si): taxi
    피자 (pija): pizza
    커피 (keo-pi): Coffee
    Edit: also wanna clarify that they are Korean words still, in a way? It’s like how we have words in English that are actually from other languages but are pronounced with English pronunciation. We don’t actively think about them being words from other languages in our day to day conversation tho 😂

      This is actually so true, when you speak a second language in your day to day life you dont realize how much of English bleeds into it. In some cases, certain languages dont have a specific word so they take it from English and alter the pronunciation a bit. It's really fascinating linguistics wise.

    This is one of my favourite episodes. Jin is well versed in NONSENSE games, jokes and quizzes. It's like his brain is wired different which totally makes this game his jam. For all his funniness he's actually a really smart dude. The embracing of english words into the korean language is referred to as Konglish. In this particular game a downfall may be dialect. One member uses his dialect to speak and another member may interpret it in his dialect Either way it makes for a great RUN BTS episode.

    It's funny cause j-hope isn't monitoring the other team to hype them. He is the hype guy, yes. But he's also the rules guy. So he was over there enforcing the rules. hahaha. It's one of my favorite things about him. He's kind and cool and goofy and energetic but he's also the neurotic guy who is always on time, always knows his and everyone else's parts, always keeps his stuff tidy (and makes sure the other members do too), and always plays by the rules. It's totally endearing.

    Some Korean words translate to sound EXACTLY like the english word it translates to just with a different accent.
    So the words you thought were english weren’t necessarily english, but they sound insanely similar.
    Example:
    Blueberry in Korean sounds exactly like Blueberry in English with a different accent and slight changes in pronunciation.

    • @dreamcatcheritsme4712

    Well technically, the syllables are the letters for Korean. You’ve gotta remember they don’t have letters like in English but instead use characters like in Japanese and Chinese. Therefore, their “letters”/characters are their syllables. 👍🏾💜

    • @monomoni
      @monomoni 3 года назад

      They have letters, hangul don´t have characters.

    • @mochiibear3
      @mochiibear3 3 года назад +12

      @@monomoni well actually with hangul the vowels and consonants can't stand on their own as letters. It's considerd a letter when a consonant and vowel are combined. So for example " ㅏ" ( korean A vowel) on its own technically makes no sound until "ㅇ" is added to it, therefore " ㅏ" is not a letter but " 아" is. Hopefully this makes sense lol

    Korean is actually a language that incorporates a lot of English. In fact, it’s to the point that certain words in Korea only exist in English, like the word coffe for example. Koreans are obsessed with coffee but there’s no Korean word for coffee...they just say coffee in English.
    Or the word “Skinship” which doesn’t exist in English but was created by Koreans and is pronounced in English.
    So don’t worry 😂😂 words like roller coaster or skate or dancing machine are technically Korean words, in that respect. They’re not giving them English words they’ve never heard about before. These words are known as “Konglish”

    3:23 there are actually a lot of english words and phrases that exist in the korean language called konglish. Usually it is used for things that are specific to the west or originated from there so instead of making up a whole new word to describe a thing or concept koreans just integrated english words into their own language (for example roller coaster and words like hand phone and cola) also korean is a language in which there are vowels and consonants so you can make english words in korean like cola = 콜라and americano = 아메리카노. The pronunciation is the same but it's just written in hangul, the korean alphabet. Please also know that a lot of these konglish words won't mean the exact same in english but they usually have some type of relation.

    like most languages, korean also has loanwords aka words from different languages that have made their way into korean. these words usually get a little accustomed to fit korean pronounciaten and alphabet, wich is why they for example r able to split them into syllables like they do here :)

  • @-amel-9896

    actually roller coaster and skate in korean are the same words as in english, that's why it sounds similar, a lot of words in different languages are token from other languages and here korean took words from the english language, just like how english have words token from french and other languages.
    Btw well i just got into the part where you guys asked if anyone is french and yes i am french and yes if you pronouny blueberry with a heavy french accent it would've sound exactly like this, accurate 👍

    The "english words" words they use are technically korean, "konglish". They are extremely commonly used in their daily speech. For some of these words like "blueberry", :roller coaster" and "skate" there are no Korean translations for these as such. The english words were directly adopted but they are written in hangeul and so their pronunciation is different.

    When you said the translation as off because it said letters, not syllables it was actually correct. The Korean language has 24 characters and they are put together in certain ways to make syllables. The way the words are spaced and the syllables are 'letters' with each syllable being one letter made up of at least 2 characters.
    I'm not sure if this really bad explanation will just confuse people more, English isn't my first language, but I hope it made a little sense!

    Just like how we borrow words from other languages in English ("deja vu", "croissant", "ballet", "chili", "chocolate") but pronounce them differently than they are said in their native languages, they do the same in korean. Koreans borrow words from the English language in Korean, but they are just pronounced differently in Korean than in English. For example, "car-bo-nara" in English is "car-e-bo-na-ra" to Koreans.

    There are lots of English/foreign words in the Korean language. They are called loan words. Like computer, radio, chocolate, hamburger, coffee, bus, party ...it's going to sound similar to English but spelled in Hangul letters. There are either no 'pure' Korean words to replace these (or if there are, they are not as commonly used by korean speakers). It would be impossible for anyone to speak 'pure' Korean today. In fact it would be impossible for anyone to speak any 'pure' language today. Every language has loan words, there's no such thing as a 'pure' language in today's age of globalisation. The English language has a lot of these as well that people don't even realize are loan words e.g. croissant, cafè, genre, karaoke, guru, ketchup, garage, entrepreneur, kindergarten, lingerie, tsunami etc.

    korean has borrowed english words, just like spanish (there's probably more languages that have this but i dont speak those lol). so words like 피자 and 코피 (pizza & coffee) are technically korean. same with words in Spanish like sándwich and parquin (sandwich and parking). of course they most likely have their korean equivalent but just saying it english is easier.
