I think that was the beauty of it. It allowed the artist the freedom to pursue their dream without the fear of being shamed if they failed. It also allowed the benefactor to choose an artist privately without being hounded by others that wanted the same deal.

Monty Hall's college education was paid for in a similar manner. He told Marc Maron he was told to return the gift to someone else (I don't believe the benefactor required repayment. )
Monty did as asked, raising millions in scholarship dollars over the years.

I ran into her once at the CBS building in L.A., at the entrance. She was being held up by a security guard who was very young and didn't recognize her. This was few years after her show had wrapped. Anyway, she was so incredibly nice to the security guard while he detained her at the front desk. I just looked at her and smiled as I was buzzed into the building and she smiled back. What a nice lady.

I love Carol Burnett. She made me laugh more than any other woman on the planet. She helps illustrate why young people have it so much worse than the Boomers. College cost $43 back then. Rent was $30 a month. Why don't Boomers ever see this inequity? Since 2002, I've paid over $93000 for a $50000 dollar loan.....I still owe over $35000.

    • @jasonhensch4703

There is no inequity. Without her "loan" she wouldn't have been able to go, it's all relative. I never went to college because I chose to avoid the debt and my life is fine. We all have the freedom to make choices and then live with the consequences good or bad.

They dont acknowledge it because they created the inequality. Boomer politiciams legislated for their own benefit at the expense of younger generations and its become nearly unfixable.

But the tuition was only $43. That's about $460 in 2021 dollars. But average annual tuition is about $10,000. So college today is more than 20 times more expensive after adjusting for inflation.

Howard rightfully get a lot of grief for being vulgar. But he is highly deferential when he has a guest he respects. And Carol Burnett can interview with the best of ‘em!

what a wonderful story, this should be in a movie, so people would be inspired of just giving and believing in others to succeed in life.
