    Kings and Generals began remaking its animated historical documentary on the history of the Ottoman empire with the early rise of the Ottoman beylik under Osman I. In the first video we covered the early origins of the beylik, its status among the Muslim states in Anatolia and its early clashes against the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire at Bapheus and Dimbos in 1302 ( • Rise of the Ottoman Em... ). The second episode showed how they became a regional power with the continued battles against the Byzantines and other states, including the siege of Prusa (Bursa) and the battle of Pelekanon ( • How the Ottomans Took ... ). As the Ottoman entered the Balkans, they had to face the Serbian Empire and the Second Bulgarian Empire, leading to the battles like Maritsa in 1371 ( • Maritsa 1371 - End of ... ). The Ottomans continued expanding both in Europe and Asia, leading to many conflicts, including the Karamanids, culminating at the battle of Frenkyazisi in 1387 ( • Ottoman Expansion in A... ). As the Ottomans managed to defeat their enemies in Anatolia, they now had time to fight against the burgeoning Balkan alliance that formed against them with Lazar Hrebeljanovic of the Moravian Serbia at its head. His confrontation with the sultan Murad I would led to the battle of Kosovo in 1389 ( • Battle of Kosovo 1389 ... ). In the aftermath of Kosovo, Bayezid I continued campaigns in Anatolia and the Balkans. The events in Anatolia culminated at the battle of Kirdilim of 1391, where the Sultan defeats his Turkic opponents led by Kadi Burhaneddin. The Ottomans became the sultans of Rum getting the title of the Seljuks ( • How the Ottomans Becam... ). Afterwards the Sultan continued campaigning in Europe, leading to the major Ottoman defeat at Rovine in 1395 against the Voivode of Wallachia, Mircea the Elder ( • First Major Ottoman De... ). Despite that, the Ottoman advance in Europe continued and to counter it, the king of Hungary Sigismund called a crusade joined by many nobles and retinues from the Balkans, France and beyond. This led to a crusade and the battle of Nicopolis in 1396 ( • How the Ottomans Defea... ). In the aftermath, Bayezid had a free rein and he blockaded Constantinople. The Roman emperor Manuel II Palaiologos decided to travel to Europe to get help, but got no help in the West ( • Roman Emperor Gets No ... ). But with the Ottoman expansion in Anatolia, Bayezid was on a collision course with another conqueror - Timur, which led to the battle of Ankara in 1402 ( • Battle of Ankara 1402 ... ). In the aftermath, the civil war of interregnum between the sons of Bayezid almost destroyed the Ottomans ( • Civil War That Almost ... ). Mehmed I won the civil war and he and his son Murad I continued the expansion, leading to the siege of Constantinople in 1422 ( • Ottoman Conquest of Th... ). Although it failed, the Ottoman expansion continued in Epirus, Albania and during the siege of Thessalonica ( • Ottoman Conquest of Th... ). As a result, more European powers became interested in fighting the Ottomans, leading to the rise of John Hunyadi and the beginning of the Varna Crusade ( • Rise of John Hunyadi -... ), and the pivotal battle of Varna in 1444 ( • Battle of Varna 1444 -... ). Resistance against the Ottomans continued with the rise of the Albanian lord Skanderbeg, who rebelled against them, leading to the battle of Torvioll.

      Have you ever thought about doing videos on the Balkan Wars 1912-1913 (or 1878) something more modern or is it mainly medieval history you focus on? Events such as the Siege of Plevna 1877 or the Siege of Scutari 1912 are brilliant episodes of worthy generals

      This is wrong, i respect the guy but come on. Skanderbeg deserted the ottoman army during the battle of Nis, where the tide turned in favour of the crusaders because of Skanderbeg’s betrayal and the ottomans lost the battle.
      More than a decade later when skanderbeg was besieging the city of Berat, one of his commanders, Moisi Arianit Golemi deserted and defected to the ottoman side. Which in turn resulted in the relief force absolutely crushing skanderbeg and killing more than half of his army. This is accepted as skanderbeg’s only loss by many historians, others also count Nis but he deserted there, so i dont consider it a loss.

      Skanderbeg statue is everywhere in Europe, even in USA. He prevented ottomans from reaching Italy. 12 years after his death(poisoned by venetians or pope because he intended to built the national orthodox albanian church, because all the other orthodox churches were under ottoman influence, he also received the award of pope "the athlete of Christ") ottomans attacked Italy( Otranto 1480 under an albanian admiral from today Preshevë, Serbia Gedik Ahmet Pasha). The next year he died( poisoned by venetians or pope), because he intended to conquer Italy, because he embraced the title roman emperor(Kayser'ul Rum).

    Hey Kings & Generals, amazing quality as always. But there is still one battle called the Albulena, which is way more impressive since it was 8000 against 80'000, where Skanderbag had divided his army into chunks, and hid in the forest for a few months, until they surrounded and slayed the Ortomans by complete surprise, I remember my grandpa telling me stories of it as a kid, since it happened near to where I live. I really reccomend it since it is what made him a true legend, it will go viral.

Go search online and read every source of antiquity and all will tell that they were undoubtedly Illyrian tribes of mighty Epir. Stop the shitty propaganda all the authors of antiquity call them Barbarians meaning not Hellens including the father of ancient History Stabo but you are smarter than those guys who knew the Molosians and probably even went to Epir during their life. So of course a citizen of a fake state like Greece a term that never ever existed before in the anals of history until 1830, an invention by King Otto the Bavarian would know better the history of the Balkans than Strabo and those guys who lived 2000 years ago right. No matter what lies you tell truth will come to light one day. The capital of Epir is in today Albania. the ancient Finiq or Foinike and that area has been documented to have always been inhabited by Illyrians-Arber-Albanians for the last 2500 years. Aleksander the great mother was from Epir 3 of his 4 Grandfathers-Grandmothers were Illyrian and one Macedonian. One of his Illyrian grandfathers or grandmothers was from the Illyrian Kingdom of Dardania(Kosovo today). So how the absolute fuck was he Hellen when they didn't even allow him to participate in the Olympics at the time because they called him a Barbarian non-Hellen so he could not participate. How come he burned Athens when he occupied Hellada and a lot of other cities but he didn't bother to even fight his father's sworn enemies the Dardanians and he only fought one battle with the Illyrians where he lost the first confrontation badly against King Kliti and Glauk but because they did not chase him he regrouped and came back and surprised them and won the battle in the end. This is the only loss he suffered but he only took the cities that the Illyrians had taken from his father and never retaliated or burned any city in Illyria but instead burned thecfuck out of Hellada together with Athens. Was he not a Hellen why so cruel with his people. Stop the lies and fucking propaganda one day the truth will come to light. You fake Karamalis and Pontic people are not the mighty Hellens have nothing to do with them do not understand their language and only have taken their alphabet and you used that today but the Greek language has nothing to do with the Hellenic language. If you don't believe me go study the language of the Hellens and you will see. How come we Albanians understand the Illyrian words left by our ancestors,,, even today we understand them all. Go read the Ancient authors and you will discover the truth you are not Hellens. Greece and Greek are modern terms invented by scholars working for Otto of Bavaria. The notion of Greeks being ethnically homogenous and direct descendants of the Hellenes has been a persistent narrative, often used to foster a sense of unity and historical continuity. However, a closer examination reveals the complexity and diversity within the Greek population, challenging the simplistic portrayal of ethnic homogeneity and direct lineage from the ancient Hellenes.
    To begin with, Greece has been a crossroads of various civilizations throughout history, including interactions with Albanians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and others. This rich history of cultural exchanges has inevitably left an imprint on the ethnic composition of the region. Genetic studies indicate a diversity of influences, reflecting the historical interactions and migrations that have shaped the genetic makeup of the Greek people. This diversity challenges the notion of a singular, homogeneous ethnic origin.
    Moreover, the concept of ethnicity itself is complex and dynamic. It is not solely determined by genetic factors but is also influenced by cultural, linguistic, and historical elements. While the Hellenes were indeed one of the ancient tribes in the region, claiming a direct ethnic lineage from them oversimplifies the intricate processes of cultural assimilation, intermixing, and acculturation that have occurred over centuries.
    Language, often considered a key marker of ethnic identity, also presents complexities. The modern Greeks language belongs to the Indo-European family but is distinct within this linguistic group. While it has roots in the Hellenic language, linguistic evolution and influences from Latin, Slavic, and other languages have contributed to its unique character. This linguistic complexity challenges the notion of a straightforward, unbroken linguistic continuity between ancient Hellenic and modern Greek.
    Historical records further complicate the narrative of ethnic homogeneity. The region has witnessed migrations, invasions, and changes in political control, all of which have contributed to the diversity within the Greek population. The medieval period, for example, saw the influx of various groups, including Slavs and Normans, leaving lasting cultural and genetic impacts.
    In conclusion, the idea of Greeks being ethnically homogenous and direct descendants of the Hellenes is a simplistic narrative that does not fully capture the complexity of Greece's history and the diversity within its population. Genetic, linguistic, and historical evidence points to a more nuanced and multifaceted reality, highlighting the need to approach the question of Greek identity with a recognition of the intricate processes of cultural evolution and interaction that have shaped the region over millennia.

    I'd love to see a series of videos on your channel about India during the Persianate age. It would be fascinating to explore the history and impact of the Delhi Sultanate, Deccan Sultanates, Mughal Empire, and other emirates, sultanates, and nawabis in the subcontinent. A detailed look into their relationships with each other, local kingdoms, merchants, the populace, customs, and religions would be incredibly insightful. Additionally, discussing their influence on Indian society and the world at large would make for an enriching series. Looking forward to seeing these stories brought to life on your channel. As these period have its own uniqueness comparatively to all other world history scenerios.

    @KingsandGenerals Fantastic episode, as always! I do have a question, though, stemming from my familiarity with that particular region of the Balkans and its history. In the segment around the 8:50 mark, it states, "Skanderbeg began forming a grand military and political alliance with the other disenfranchised Albanian noble families of the local region..." Subsequently, the video displays banners/sigils of those families, including the Balšić family. I'd like to point out that the Balšić family is not Albanian. This fact is evident not only from many historical sources but also from the family name itself, which distinctly differs from the others mentioned. I'm sure this wasn't a deliberate error, but I felt it important to address this oversight. :)

      Hello, well it depends on what sources you have read.
      There are even serbian historians who say that they were not serbs, but albanians.
      Not trying to start some debate, but really curious about the sources. In Albanian, they are known as Balshajt.

    • @Swrktar
      @Swrktar 2 месяца назад

      Ethnicity of Balshajs is a matter of historians...we learned they were Albanian, Serbs learned they Serbian, Montegrin that they were Montenegrins etc...

    • @arditsaliasi6515
      @arditsaliasi6515 2 месяца назад

      @@Swrktar yes, as it should be, but there are a lot of sources that say that they are albanians(not denying also the other sources). On your first comment, you wrote with certainty that they were not and I would like to know your sources.
      As mentioned, I am not trying to open some stupid nationalistic debate.

    • @i.c.8870
      @i.c.8870 2 месяца назад

      @@arditsaliasi6515 @Swrktar Thanks for the thoughtful conversation. The question of the Balšić family's origins is indeed nuanced and deserves a careful look at historical evidence and scholarly consensus. According to a range of historical research, including works from Serbian, international, and some Albanian scholars, the Balšić family is generally recognized as being of Serbian origin.
      Authors like John V.A. Fine, in his authoritative work "The Late Medieval Balkans," outline the Balšić family’s integral role within the Serbian noble circles, particularly their governance in the Serbian principality of Zeta and their substantial contributions to the Serbian Orthodox Church. This is complemented by insights from Elizabeth Roberts in "Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro," which places the Balšić family squarely within the context of Serbian medieval history.
      Furthermore, "Historia e Popullit Shqiptar," a comprehensive Albanian history text, while highlighting the family's influence in regions now part of modern Albania, does not contradict their Serbian noble origins, suggesting a trans-national influence typical of medieval Balkan nobility.
      The etymology of the Balšić name, alongside contemporaneous Serbian and Venetian documents, repeatedly aligns them with Serbian identity, underpinning their contributions to and interactions within the Serbian cultural and political spheres.
      Additionally, the argument going in favor of the Balšić family's having Serbian roots is evidenced by their significant interactions with other Serbian noble families and their patronage of (what is now known) as the Serbian Orthodox Church, which was a central aspect of their rule and identity and which is the fact undisputed between all relevant sources today.
      I fully respect the regional educational narratives and am not dismissing the varied perspectives that enrich our understanding of Balkan history. My aim is to share insights grounded in broad academic research to foster a more informed discussion. Thank you for keeping this dialogue open and respectful.
