  • Psalm 74 is a plea and a prayer by Asaph in great sorrow from the destruction of the sanctuary.
Asaph lived and served during the reigns of David and Solomon, which were generally times of security and blessing for Israel. Yet even within those generally good times, there were occasions of difficulty in the face of Israel’s enemies. Asaph wrote during such a season, or possibly with such a difficult time in mind.

2:04 David, 1 SAMUEL 4 recounts the capture of the Ark of the Covenant, NOT the destruction of the tabernacle at Shiloh. All it says about that is that the Israelites suffered a terrible defeat, that at tha battle site itself the victorious Philistines took the Ark as a trophy, that a messenger came running TO Shiloh where the priest Eli was waiting, and that Eli died there upon hearing all the bad news. There is no account either in that chapter, or in subsequent chapters of the tabernacle at Shiloh being destroyed.

Dear Dr Dave. Thank you for your expo of this Psalm. Question. How could the Covenant mentioned in this Psalm be the New Covenant seeing it was written before Christ?

Perhaps the Enduring Word Commentary will be of some help in answering your question. God bless you!

In 1 Samuel 4 it says that the ark of the covenant of God was brought into the camp and verse 17 it was taken by the Philistines. I don’t read anything in chapter 4 that says the tabernacle at Shiloh was ransacked??? I have wondered many years what exactly happened to the tabernacle at Shiloh???

the tabernacle is a representation of the four rivers flowing into the tree of life, the Tabernacle of Sinai. Could it not also be a multi level reflection of current events and a lamentation for the loss of Eden? Great analysis.
