The consistency of a product makes a huge difference. I have used both Sarco putty and Abatron wood expoy and they are both a pleasure to work with. Seriously, other products have turned projects into a miserable experience.
Thank you! I appreciate the video. Made mistakes but re watched and pretty sure I got it. For stained wood (or to prevent scratching the wood), be super careful if you use a putty knife to put the putty down. I personally will use my fingers and use the putty knife only to smoothe it and shape the corners.
I bought Sherwin Williams “Duration” paint (acrylic) for our 112 yo window rehab. This paint says no primer needed. Should I still paint at least the rabbet w an oil based primer for the putty’s sake?
No, the oils in primer react with the linseed in the putty. Linseed is a natural primer and best paint right over gently since it will be soft for months after. Latex is the best performer in the modern era - make sure the whiting aka Calcium Carbonate powder is blown off gently right after dusting or it can be a weak point for paint adhesion
Excellent video with no BS. Abatron has been invaluable to me maintaining my 1920 craftsman home.

How long should I wait before I can paint the putty?
It just needs to form a skin. For us its typically 1 day, 2 days for sure. This is inside a shop though and that room is kept 68 degrees.
Shouldn't the putty be primed first before painting with finish coat?

It’s hard to trust the video after watching how you paint the window.50 year painting never saw anyone cut to the glass that way.
