  • If you are having a hard time playing chords on guitar, don't give up. Three string chords might be the stepping stone you need to start making some progress.
I recently had a guitar student that has arthritis in both hands and playing chords has been really painful for him. We decided to take a step back and just focus on three-string chords. These are much easier to play for beginners, people with carpal tunnel, arthritis, tendonitis or just small hands.
I hope these are helpful. Please leave a comment if you have any questions or would like me to demonstrate another chord on 3 strings.
    Thanks for watching!

This might be a dumb question, but since I’m fairly new at the guitar, why don’t people just automatically play it that way? Perhaps maybe if you did a video where you compared how they sound side-by-side done the modified version and the original version to hear the difference. Thank you for this though, I just feel like my fingers are too fat but then again I’m just getting started so I’m sure the strength comes along with it.

Hey! Thanks for watching and the question. The 6 string versions of these chords sound more full because you get allot of lower sounds from the other strings. I think most people just start with the 6 string versions because that’s just what pops up on the internet when you search for chords. I think people just don’t know that there are other options, especially when they are just starting out.
Also, if you do have big hands, you should consider trying out some other guitars the next time you are at a shop. Some guitar necks are bigger and space the strings out further which gives you more room. You will build hand strength and that makes a big difference, but some guitars may just be easier for you to play as well.

@@PeterPlaysGuitar thanks. I may have to walk into a guitar shop and hold a few with my normal sized hands and see if there is a problem or I'm just a wimp. sometimes the A chord where you have to stuff three fingers on three strings same fret is like putting three cows in the trunk of a Mini Cooper

Great analogy 😂 For that particular chord, some people suggest a different fingering. Justin guitar has a video on this I believe.
