I have a long standing policy of respecting everyone's right to define their own sexuality with whatever label they choose themselves or not define it at all if they don't like those labels. I used to get real pissed when other people used to decide they knew more about my sexuality than I did, and even more galling, they thought they were entitled to gossip, and speculate about the topic. If Merv wanted us to know more about who he jumped in the sack with, he'd have said more.

I met Merv when I was 21 years old and he was in his , I think, 70's. Some said he was gay at the time, and I think he kind of liked me, but I didn't mind because he was extremely respectful and was the nicest guy anyone could ever meet. Really who cares if he was gay? Many in the entertainment industry are gay. Merv had a real sense of comedy and made me laugh a lot. Yes he was wealthy but you'd never know it, he put on no heirs. I haven't read the book, but I hope it shed a good light on him because he didn't have a mean bone in his body.

When in high school, I loved watching the Merv Griffin show. Merv had fabulous guests, was an excellent host, and he was an amazing music composer. His band played several pieces written by Merv, including his January February March. I'll never forget it. I wish The Merv Griffin Shows could be re-released.

I loved Merv Griffin as an entertainer but I do believe he s3×ually harassed and also blacklisted choreographer Denny Terrio. Geraldo's "interview" interrogation of Terrio on his talk show is horrifying to watch in this day and age.

I saw one episode of Merv live in the studio audience. He was quite the cold fish. Did not say a single word to the studio audience before, after, or during commercial breaks. No "hello". No "thank you". He just smoked and ignored the audience during breaks.

I look forward to getting to read all those books. Being a fan of classic film and TV in this day and age means most all of the stars are dead as are many of the people that knew them personally. I also like that it's a modern perspective including their sexuality that would've been omitted in any older biographies.

I loved Merv. He was a great entertainer and a joy to watch and listen to. That said, he was, in my view, a closeted man. He likely did treat other gay men poorly. Those were the times though.

Funny you mention that. There used to be an interview on RUclips of Merv's with Graham Chapman, who was a member of the Monty Python troupe and an out-of-the-closet gay man. Merv seemed to treat him with distaste and without his usual charm. I cannot find the interview here or anywhere else but I'll continue to look.

I'm not sure how this gentleman dates history. Elvis "broke out of the scene" long before '58, much less '59! He was already a sensation in '56 with "Heartbreak Hotel, "Hound Dog," and it's b-side, "Don't Be Cruel"! '58 was the year of "Hard Headed Women" and the later, fuller, Elvis sound. I believe "One Night," "A Fool Such As I" "A Big Hunk of Love" and other such hits were all from that period. He must have had at least one Golden Hits LP out by then (14 songs) and probably even two (10 songs).

The way he interviewed was mesmerizing to watch... charming his guests and audience with questions and his listening style.
Actually, we could all learn a little from that example of kindness towards others... especially now. I hope it was genuine... either way... that’s okay. Today, we’ve actually forgotten the art of interest in one another and just listening.

Basically, Merv Griffin should be remembered for his contributions to the entertainment industry. But I will always remember him for his relationship with Eva Gabor, and that's it. So what's the big deal? If this was the early 70's someone might care or think it was interesting. Paul Lynde was gay and EVERYBODY new it, he even had the center square. IF not discussing your sexual interest is hiding or being deceptive to a public who watches your show to see Donnie and Marie then we live in a different world. However, Merv was a showmen who's interests were to present entertainment, NOT entertainment with a Homosexual host, etc.
He did have known gay stars on his shows but people tuned in to see their act or interview not their sex life.
The so-called "Gay agenda" is SOOOOoooo needy as to making sure EVERYONE understands the act in ALL it's details and forms. Why not understand that being homosexual is just a very small part of who you are and NOT all that you are.

paul lynde and little richard and liberace were not THEMSELVES ADMITTING the fact in public at that time...
THEY lived in a world that was VERY DIFFERENT from the world of 2O18 and THEY knew it...
they stayed in the closet because they didnt want to risk their careers and finances and reputation.....
thats how it was in those days...you just DID NOT announce to the general public that you were gay...it was career suicide...

This book's very title implies an appeal to a certain "niche" market, shall we say, as opposed to a comprehensive biography of a noteworthy personality.
I realize the political agendas of some is a homosexual celebrity who conceals her or his sexual orientation is a traitor to her/his orientation peers. But I have always thought it a person's right to protect her/his privacy, inherent with such just as much right to remain "in the closet" as out of it.

I think Merv Griffin was very close with Eva Gabor. She was his beard in Hollywood. She made it look like they were a couple, but she was just covering for Merv to show he was strait. In Hollywood, a lot of gay men use women as a cover-up. especially back in the 1950's and 60's. when it was not accepted. Today is so different. there is still a stigma, but people are not ashamed or inhibited anymore.

    • @Lisa-di1wi

Rock Hudson is such an example. He was only married once; but it was to cover up his homosexuality. I didn't know that he was gay until he announced to the world that he had AIDS. And when he made an appearance on Dynasty, he had to kiss Linda Evans.
Sadly, Rock Hudson died on my 28th birthday; which was October 2, 1985.

I don't want to remember Merv Griffin for the rumors that he was gay. And I don't care to know it either. Merv Griffin should be remembered for his contributions to the entertainment industry. But I will always remember him for his relationship with Eva Gabor; and that's it.

In 1970 I began doing a series for the New York Times on `Gays in Film and TV` and the extent to which gay sub-culture passes for straight and indoctrinates viewers. The series never was published but in preparing it I got to interview some powerful gay influences including Merv Griffin. I have a couple of hours of Griffin talking about the subject. Sex orientation is one of several taboos which features in my interviews with megastars. The others are gender, race and antisemitism. Porter`s work does not contextualize. Thus it is lurid and salacious. Mine does or at least tries to.
