This is literally the perfect music for today. The sun is red, Corona virus is present, and the future is unclear... But it's okay because my mind is on a beach somewhere...
Man, I was certain hearing the first bars of the first riff I was going to hear Donald Fagen or Water Becker start to sing. What a beat, what a groove. Genki des! Reminds me of my times in Okinawa.
This is an interesting compilation, although it is NOT Island Music from Japan. I would say it's more like a Japanese take on Jamaican and Hawaiian sounds. There are bits of Reggae, Ska, Dub and Hawaiian music here, but no Japanese Island sounds - like, for example, Okinawan music or Sado music. Maybe the only song that has a more Japanese-ish sound is City of Aleppo (!), because the musician plays tonkori, which is an Ainu instrument. Anyway, I was more surprised than disappointed because the selection is good and pleasant.
You're right! When I first heard the Japanese term 島唄 (Island Songs) referring to Okinawan music, I was like: wait a minute, isn't Japan all islands? But no, they don't label Enka, Gagaku or J-pop as Island Music even though these music genres were created in an island! Anyway, there are so many weird subgenres such as "Mondo Exotica", it's hard to keep track. Apparently "Island Music" has a tropical, summery quality to it - in the case of this comp, it's more a crossover of different styles.

Sounds like Ska-J from Venice, who have been active since 2002. Excellent track!
