Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm f/1.8 with image stabilization was announced on April 2015. The first e-mount camera with sensor stabilization was the a7 II and was announced five months before the announcement of Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm f/1.8. Zeiss and Sony are friends for many decades but probably during the design of Batis 85mm f/1.8, Zeiss didn't know for the Sony plans on sensor stabilization of mirrorless cameras. Afterwards all the next Zeiss Batis don't have image stabilization. Also after the introduction of Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm f/1.8 on April 2015 only one Sony Zeiss lenses was introduced for e-mount or a-mount, for APS-C or full frame cameras. That lens was the Sony Zeiss Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA and was the last e-mount Sony Zeiss lens. I doubt if we will see any future Sony Zeiss lenses for e-mount or a-mount cameras. The last Sony Zeiss a-mount lenses were introduced in 2015 but frankly a-mount doesn't have any real future. Maybe Zeiss doesn't want to collaborate any more with Sony on lenses and prefers its own e-mount lenses. After the Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 all premium Sony e-mount lens are G (Gold) or GM (Gold Master).
Excellent video breakdown as always Dustin. I have the Sony 85 1.8 and the main advantages include the price, the size/weight and for me the focus button on the lens for eye af. I look forward to your views on the wider options as well and who you'd recommend them for including the Sony 24 1.4 gm, the sony 35 1.8, the samyang/rokinon 35 1.4 and I believe Viltrox has an option in that range as well. But in general, do you find the Samyang/Rokinon to be good investments for people looking at budget options while delivering quality? Another question is what if I don't want to buy a lens station, do any sellers calibrate the Samyang/Rokinon options?
Hi Jose - the focus button used to be a big deal to me, too, then Sony added full time Eye AF, and suddenly that is less of an asset. I still like having it, but it isn't as big of a deal now. The lens station is mostly good for firmware updates. You don't really need to calibrate focus with mirrorless lenses.
Dustin Abbott believe me we appreciate it, it’s not often we get to see all or atleast most of the options all together and at the same time for a review.. Take your time and thanks again 👍
I can't wait for part 2. Right now I am using Canon's 85mm f/1.8 on my a7III and am curious if any of the cheaper f/1.8 options you have are appreciably better.
You will notice a marked improvement in focusing when you get a native lens! I didn't know things could work this good when I switched to Sony. I quickly sold ALL my canon gear and never looked back.
Man I almost jumped out of my chair this morning when your post announcement for this came through. I watched but couldn't comment then. I'm so excited!!! This is going to be hell for you to compare so many lenses at once. I really can't wait for the results! I have the 85 1.8 as it was the first lens I bought with my A7iii body. It is my bread and butter lens and I love it. I mentioned to you on you Samyang test I was interested in switching because I love the warmer tones and the slightly better bokeh. I haven't pulled that trigger yet and can't wait to see your results. Also as a side note I miss the wooden wall. The bricks are, well, they are bricks lol.
I haven't tested that combo since more firmware updates have come out, but I would personally choose the Samyang over it. The Samyang does a lot of the same things in terms of bokeh and rendering with less CA and a much lower price tag
When reviewing Eye AF, could you please shoot subjects while they move towards and away from the camera and compare shapness (in photo mode) . I have the Samyang which really struggles at F1.4 but only gets better at F2 with Eye Af. Had to send it to manufacturer and have to wait about 2 months to see what they do!
@@ab85main73 I didn't bother to get it back. Got the GM. The extra few hundreds of dollars was well worth it. No fuss, no worry about the IQ, confidence in future, you get all of that in GM. Never gonna buy cheap lenses anymore
@@ab85main73 No worries man. Keep in mind you can always get a GM used for cheaper and sell it anytime for the same price as you bought or even sometimes for more! But with cheap lenses you struggle to find a buyer for them and when you do, you absolutely have no choice but to sell it cheaper than ever. I bought a 16-35GM for $2200 AUD used and sold it for $2600 just two weeks later. GM is expensive, but its like iMac, it never loses its value, its the best quality, and when you have it, you know that there is nothing better in the world than what you own. I hope you make the right decision. Cheers
It's taken a lot of time and effort, but I'll also break out from this and release reviews of three of these lenses that I hadn't previously reviewed, so call it multitasking.
As usual... Already two who disliked due to not liking very well thought and through reviews... I'll purchase the best option for the buck when this is finished . Probably the viltrox due to his past reviewwweeeeee :)
What's that 400 F 2.8 doing in there. Oh wait that's a Sigma lens
LOL. Well done, sir, well done
I thought it was Bazooka.
😂😂😂😂 Best comment I've seen on youtube all month!
Lol thing is a freaking tower
Now, this is what you call comprehensive... Thanks for all the effort.
You're welcome.
With Dustin Abbott videos I first like the video, then proceed to watch
thats the way to do it :3
That's kind :)
This is the best 85mm review I have seen. Thanks!

I don't see any area I disagree. The Planar 50mm F1.4 is a G Master lens in every way but title.
I hit that like button without even seeing the video!
That helps make up for those that like to give me a thumbs down without watching.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I had faith that you would deliver a good review which you did!
oh yes, here we go!
Enjoy!
Well done for all this work, thanks

As always very informative and well executed video 👍

fantastic ..... cant wait to see the next episode
It's going to get interesting.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ive got a good inkling to know where those suprises may be... . cant wait
Thank you Mr Abbott.
You're welcome
Oh yeaaa! You are the man for these shootouts 🤘
They are fun, though a lot of work (and expense) to coordinate and execute.

#1 love your work Dustin. Keep it up :)
Thanks!
I can't wait for part 2. Right now I am using Canon's 85mm f/1.8 on my a7III and am curious if any of the cheaper f/1.8 options you have are appreciably better.
The short answer is that all three of them are.

Subscribed for this one. Waiting for the image sharpness and quality.
Today I have a detailed autofocus evaluation that drops, with two image quality episodes coming over the following two weeks.
nice one Dustin.. very cool review. 👍
Thanks!

I loved that wall, too. Unfortunately after my move I don't have access to it
Starting to watch the video, I hope all lenses have their firmware updated to the latest
At the time of the review, yes.
Great Video 👍🏼 but where would you rank the Canon 85 1.4 L IS USM in this comparison?
Are you talking about adapting it? Otherwise it isn't really relevant.
@@DustinAbbottTWI yes, i mean in adapting it. I have the lens, but not the possibility to adapt it to a Sony.
I haven't tested that combo since more firmware updates have come out, but I would personally choose the Samyang over it. The Samyang does a lot of the same things in terms of bokeh and rendering with less CA and a much lower price tag
maik tebeck get that weak shit outta here

That's interesting, as I have great eye AF success with the Samyang.
Muji Huz have you received your lens back? If so how did it turn out?
