  • I had the delight to have an RSC with the delightful, brilliant and hilarious Anna Russell in Los Angeles in 1979. What an honor!
Anna Russell was an English-Canadian singer and comedian. She gave many concerts in which she sang and played comic musical sketches on the piano. Among her best-known works are her concert performances and famous recordings of The Ring of the Nibelungs (An Analysis) - a humorous 22-minute synopsis of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen - and (on the same album) her parody How to Write Your Own Gilbert and Sullivan Opera.

Wonderfull and funny lady, I just met her searching for some info on Wagner's opera Der Ring des Nibelungen. She explains the opera in a very comic and knowledgeable way. A joy to hear.

I saw her live several times and her knowledge of opera music and other vocal music genre was absolutely marvelous when combined with her incredible comic timing.

Dalmata, it means so much to me that you appreciated the Divine light as much as I did all that time ago. Thank you for taking the time to comment. All my best, Dennis

Thanks so much for your kind reply, Dennis.
It's you who have brought a great deal of happiness to my life with this interview I didn't even know it existed!
I envy you, honestly, and I'm delighted to know that you had the privilege and enjoyed it for me, too.
      Best regards, Bernardo.

Anna Russell is who you listen to if you want to hear opera massacred (she does it intentionally, as her uncle was the conductor for the Royal Canadian Orchestra). She got hit in the nose by a hockey puck when young and that was the end of her being an opera singer.
HOWEVER. Since she knew all the operas (and is musically trained), she turned herself into an operatic comedienne and he is HYSTERICAL. You have to listen to her Ring Cycle, where she tosses off witty bon mots, clever turn-of-a-phrase utterances. She was absolutely fantastic.
When I want to laugh, I listen to her routines on RUclips. It never fails to make me laugh, no matter how rough my day has been. She was a gem. I'm glad I got to see her when she came to San Francisco in 1978. A charming, riotously funny lady!

I had no idea that Florence Foster Jenkins inspired Anna Russell!

I really regret not ever having the pleasure of seeing her live, basically because she only toured the English speaking part of the world, and I'm from a Spanish speaking country. I wasn't even born when she was on her heyday, but I really enjoyed her albums, some of which I still own and enjoy in my stereo.
She was from another world than mine completely, but I still worship her and will be grateful forever for her immense talent and for making me laugh like mad with her spot on comments on the absurdity of the librettos of some operas, particularly The Ring of The Nibelung. Just as she said in her "first" farewell concert: "Only Richard Wagner to explain it for us"
Thank you very very much for uploading this funny interview.

I'd always wanted to see more video tapes of her, and what luck that this is not just video, but the actual woman herself, giving an account of that outrageous life of hers. What an encounter for you! Great thanks for the invaluable document.
