- Johann Sebastian Bach composed the chorale prelude during his time in Weimar (1708-14). It is one of 46 works in what he called his "OrgelBüchlein" BWV 599-644, for which he noted: "Worinne einen anfahrenden Organisten Anleitung gegeben wird, auff allerhand Arth einen Choral durchführen ..." He therefore intended this collection as teaching material for budding composers and organists. Ferrucio Busoni transcribed the organ work for piano.
