When my wife died suddenly in 2018, this song perfectly captured my feelings of utter desolation - but it was also strangely comforting. I played it so many times in the months afterwards. I just played this for my grade 8 class after analyzing the lyrics as they connect to our novel study of "Speak". The were able to interpret the emotions related to trying and trying to hold things together, despite have it seem all worthless..."feels like wasted time." Beyond the lyrics they expressed how much her voice, the movement of the camera doing circles around the players, the repetition of chords on the piano, and even the instrumentalists on the steps gave depth and meaning to the song. The novel, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, tells the story of a 9th grade girl who is in the depth of isolation, sadness, and anger after a summer tragedy. Very powerful.

Nanna's voice is beautiful, that's the only way to tell you. I saw Of Monsters and Men live 7 years ago in Philadelphia. The entire band is beyond talented. Unless you've seen them in person, it's almost unexplainable. One of the best shows I've ever been to.
I'm over half a century old.. this song rates in my top ten, most beautiful of all time. This is sublimely good.. thank you Olafur. What's in that Icelandic water??
Its the weather, the cold and dark breeds depth and character. Iceland has the highest per capita prescriptions of anti-depressants in the world, this darkness and turbulence helps makes the whole. Beauty is a symmetry of light and dark, it is found at the inflection point between the negative and positive emotional states, this song exemplifies this, you need both sides. The bride is beautiful because she is shielded by the veil, the veil is the bridge between light and dark, the best and most beautiful music is found here, the veil is the inflection point.
My father works at home and he tends to put his music out loud. This song has been playing FOR MONTHS. MONTHS of this playing for hours on loop. I'm not making this up. I can't take it anymore.
Here are the correct lyrics, as posted by Nanna on her Twitter: Here I am Floating in emerald sea Keep me dancing Keep me still as can be And I try to keep the balance right I try but it feels like wasted time But these heavy hands They’re pulling me down on my chest Latching on, coloring all of my flesh Quietly, you hover over me And I fight but it feels like wasted time Say goodnight I know that I’m swallowed in sea We collide, colors that devour me Just say goodnight I’m already down I cry I'm already down Already down And I cry Already down And I try And I try But it feels like wasted…
What a voice and musical arrangements! Nanna Bryndis makes me dream in countless ways, under the guidance of the talented Olafur Arnalds. This is one of those unforgettable musical works of art - it will last for many centuries - for my grandchildren, great-grandchildren and whoever comes through the door of time. Congratulations in the clouds!
Does anyone realize this is possibly the first collaboration Olafur has done with a female "vocalist". I've been following his music since 2009 or so. This here, is gold, and absolutely new. I was waiting for something like this. A voice like hers, and Olafur's music to go with it. Beautiful!
@@11Garrett11 Actually, in my opinion, she sounds very unique against the rest of today's music. No hate on what you said, I respect your opinion, but I think she is very different.
So this is what Nanna has been doing, I have to say this was brilliant and I'm interested in Ólafur as a result. Plus does anyone else think she gets better at singing all the time?
I like thinking about the meaning of this song as a story of a drowned woman and her soul out of her body which sees that a lifeguard tries to reanimate her, but she already knows that's too late and it's just wasted time. Whole process of saving life is always emotional, rushing and stressful, but the song maintains peaceful vibe, even though she cries about leaving this world, but knowing it's time to move on. Say goodbye and don't worry- you've done your best
No it is not. Or not any more precious than any other blood. It may appear that an unusually high percentage of Icelanders are making appealing music, and indeed, a larger number of Icelanders do, but it has nothing to do with genetics or blood. The main reason is subsidised music schools and the grate work done there. A large percentage of Icelandic children study music from age six and up, the vast majority of which never become musicians, but a side effect of this is that the kids learn to listen to (and yes this is something you can learn and get better at) and appreciate different types of music (effectively building a market for music). This large percentage of kids learning music insures that those that do have an innate knack for it actually discover this talent instead of becoming a lawyer, hairdresser or a used car sales man. Long story short, good things come to those who work hard for them. This applies to societies just as it applies to individuals.
I don't think he meant it literally. He meant it maybe in a poetic way, that what makes Icelanders Icelandic is something to be treasured, captured, retained, hope never to be lost.

There are so many things happening in such beautiful unison. The fact that as the camera pans and when you hear each instrument is perfection. It's masterclass in everything, music videography, lighting...this song got me through
If less is more then this is the very, very least. It's utterly, utterly extraordinary. It sounds like something a Zen Buddhist monk would compose to explain what cannot be explained in regular language. Olafur and Sigor Ros are the reasons why Iceland is probably the closest country to where natural beauty, poetry and spirituality converge into an ecstatic and blissful state of nirvanic peace. I'm in complete awe at your extraordinary talent. If humanity still exists in five hundred years time , they will look back at this the way we look back at Vermeer and Byrd and Josquin des Prez today. Kudos. Kudos to the max.
Thanks, but I wrote the comment when I was waiting for the video to be published, that's why I refreshed my "subscriptions" page ;) Cool feature though!
A beautiful piece, Olafur. Wonderful work. And Nanna, she is a gift to the world, a treasure, so evocative, so passionate, so beautiful. The lyrics are gorgeous. I try to resist. But there is no chance. I can't. Fantastic, Nanna.
When I first listened to this song I thought it was absolutely beautiful but it wasn't until I experienced this song in the midst of circumstances that held the same tune that every letter spoke to me and I begin to appreciate it as a unique moment in time that can always be repated. Craftsmanship like this is why I started creating music many years ago and also one of many reasons I enjoy it as much as I do today.
Wow, this voice! The first time I heard this, I thought “hm… something familiar…”. It was very unexpected to hear Nanna here) BTW, she and Of Monsters and Men are beautiful. And Arnalds is too.
I love this song and I’ve listened to it a million times and it’s never lost it’s hold on me. I highly suggest listening to the entire album, Island Songs. The man who wrote the words being sung in this song is featured in one of the songs. He reads the poem in Icelandic and it’s honestly of the most incredible things I have ever heard. The song is called Árbakkinn .
We played this music at the funeral of my father. It was so beautiful. Thank you all i will never ever forget it because nothing could make me cry but when the music started i was overwhelmed
warrenbisch really I agree it's too good and I don't understand how anyone can not like it. That leads to my second point, everyone has taste, if this isn't theirs they aren't going to like and appreciate it how we do. Back to the first point, it's pure unadulterated talent and every soul should be able to appreciate something of this standard whether it's their taste or not. I'd say everyone has the right to their opinion, and certainly the right to their expressing of dislike to something. But to finalise my drawn out point and make my final one, why is there a dislike button! By not pressing like that is expressing your free will to not like something. To boldly say I do not like this and have to have that broadcast, especially something to this standard whereby anyone with an ability to feel emotions should be connecting on so many levels. Idk, free choice, individual taste blah blah, that's fine but these type of pieces to actively seek out to dislike it, I assume they boil kittens for fun ;)

Here I am
Floating in emerald sea
Keep me dancing
Keep me still as can be
And I try to keep the balance right
I try but it feels like wasted time
But these heavy hands
They’re pulling me down on my chest
Latching on, coloring all of my flesh
Quietly, you hover over me
And I fight but it feels like wasted time
Say goodnight
I know that I’m swallowed in sea
We collide, colors that devour me
Just say goodnight
I’m already down
I cry
I'm already down
Already down
And I cry
Already down
And I try
And I try
But it feels like wasted…
Which is obviously incorrect haha

I'm so blessed with her voice, love you Nanna and thank you Ólafur
Here I am
Floating in emerald sea
Keep me dancing
Keep me as still as can be
And I try to keep the balance right
And I try but it feels like wasted time
But these heavy hands
They're pulling me down on my chest
Latching on, coloring all of my flesh
Quietly, you hover over me
And I fight but it feels like wasted time
Say goodnight
I know that I'm swallowed in sea
We collide, colors that devour me
Just say goodnight
I'm already down
I cry
Already down
Already down
And I cry
Already down
And I try
And I try
But it feels like wasted
Every time I hear it, it gives me the same sensations as the first day: tenderness, love and an extraordinary sensibility.
3:42 love the brush just going on every beat
4 years ago released, only found out about this jewel a week ago, spotify started playing random music when I was asleep and this was so beautiful that I woke up, saved it and went back to sleep
💓My beautiful Nanna 💓💘😍 oh my lord she sing so beautiful .magical voice its so unique MY BEAUTIFUL NANNA BH
Omg I love her expressions and her voice
There are so many things happening in such beautiful unison. The fact that as the camera pans and when you hear each instrument is perfection. It's masterclass in everything, music videography, lighting...this song got me through
Wonderful song. And respect for carrying that iron frame piano up those stairs
I was refreshing every 15 sec for the last 10 minutes! Worth it, thank you!
yup! same
right click in the video, click loop :)
Thanks, but I wrote the comment when I was waiting for the video to be published, that's why I refreshed my "subscriptions" page ;)
Cool feature though!
Words can't describe how this song makes me feel.
Pefect vocal and melody, all perfect together to listen to on a rainy day.
Just got here by chance and I just loved it .. greetings from Brazil.
Oh man... I love every single second of this. What a gorgeous, moving piece of music.
Words cannot describe just how beautiful this song is
When going down music rabbit hole's bring you here 🥺❤
A beautiful piece, Olafur. Wonderful work. And Nanna, she is a gift to the world, a treasure, so evocative, so passionate, so beautiful. The lyrics are gorgeous. I try to resist. But there is no chance. I can't. Fantastic, Nanna.
Simply amazing Niagara falls even during lock-down: ruclips.net/video/2k5AiSZsZuM/видео.html
So Close, So Far...all Particles. We float, sometimes touching. To music. This music. From the throbbing, loving heart of Iceland.
A grieving healing song. Only God knows our deepest intimate thoughts. Peace.
Put your earphones on, turn down the lights, close your eyes...and just cry for the sheer beauty of this song.
This song gets me every. single. time. Absolutely beautiful.
this song reminds me how magnificent is to be alive.
I can't remember, when I was so thrilled by such a beautiful piece of music. Takk fyrir!!!
Wow, this voice! The first time I heard this, I thought “hm… something familiar…”. It was very unexpected to hear Nanna here)
BTW, she and Of Monsters and Men are beautiful. And Arnalds is too.
I don’t know how anyone can listen to this song and not bawl their eyes out 😭😭😭
I love this song and I’ve listened to it a million times and it’s never lost it’s hold on me.
Thank you all i will never ever forget it because nothing could make me cry but when the music started i was overwhelmed
juffrouwdewit Rest In peace. Music always help to life. ☝😇
Came here for Nanna, 😍❤️🇮🇸
All this is pure magic...the voice, the song, the music, the place, the video clip... UAU
That piano is golden and warm. What a great sounding recording.
How do people downvote this? Pure talent, can't stop watching it. Love Nanna!!
warrenbisch really I agree it's too good and I don't understand how anyone can not like it.
This song is hauntingly beautiful and makes me cry every time I listen to it.
Fascinating location. I have always wanted to go to Iceland.
