- What are Tasmanian Devils?
Where are Tasmanian Devils from?
The Tasmanian devil cannot be mistaken for any other marsupial. Its spine-chilling screeches, black colour, and reputed bad-temper, led the early European settlers to call it The Devil. Although only the size of a small dog, it can sound and look incredibly fierce.
Tasmanian Devils are the largest living carnivorous marsupial (Dasyurid) in Australia. They have sharp powerful claws and a backward facing pouch. Male devils have a head to body length of 652mm. Females are smaller, reaching only 570mm in length. Male Tasmanian Devils can weigh up to 12kg, and females up to 10kg. Each Devil has distinctive white markings on their chest, which is used like a fingerprint to identify individuals.
More than 5000 years ago, Tasmanian Devils were common on mainland Australia. Today, they are only found in Tasmania. They are however, found in virtually every type of habitat occurring in Tasmania, including suburban fringes. As Tasmanian Devils are shy, nocturnal creatures they are rarely seen in the wild.

Such adorable and fascinating creatures! Also it is fascinating how Warner Bros obviously did research on them from vocalizations till the attitude and character and turn them into an iconic and lovable cartoon character!
It is really rare to see cartoons use such a unique and rare animal (we usually see the standards; rabbits mice, ducks etc) and I am really grateful at Warner Bros they gave voice in this amazing creature in pop culture!
Looking at the babies, I didn't see any resemblance to Taz (no surprise - I wasn't expecting to); but I could hear similarities in the sounds of the older ones.

No one has ever been killed by a Tasmanian devil. They are very shy and avoid people. They will bite as a last resort if you got to close to a wild devil.
That’s why they’re called devils. When the English settlers first heard them in the forest they thought they were hearing the devil.

I couldn’t believe the idiots I used to work with at Motorola years ago. In a room of 22 of us, only me and one other person knew that Tasmanian Devils were real creatures. All of our other coworkers were mocking and laughing at us.....they thought we were trying to pull something on them......they thought that a Tasmanian Devil was only a cartoon character.
After having our home broken into several years back, I told my husband that I wished I could have Tasmanian Devils in the back yard to guard the house. Lol!

Our supervisor was temporarily sent to China to help orientate people in the new plant there, back in the late 90’s. He said that the people thought nothing of going to the bathroom in a corner of the clean room! Here we at least knew cleanroom procedures and protocol......but to save a buck, Motorola sent our jobs to China! You get what you pay for.

Technically like a cat I believe. There's something similar that is a lot more dangerous if you get near it called a quoll and that is a cat.
