  • Japan Plans to Release Radioactive Water Anger the World | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Japan is set to pour Fukushima wastewater into the Pacific. A UN watchdog has approved the plan for treated water release. But Japan's plans to release wastewater have irked neighbours. China has urged the suspension of Fukushima water release plans. South Koreans are panic buying salt, causing prices to rise by 27%. Is Fukushima wastewater release safe? Why is the world so angry at Japan?

At nuclear power plants, tritium is always produced as electricity is generated.
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant dilutes up to 22 trillion becquerels of tritium annually and releases it into the ocean.
Marine release of tritium is a common practice in nuclear facilities around the world.
For example, nuclear power plants in Canada actually release 21 times more tritium into the ocean than in Fukushima, nuclear power plants in China release five times as much tritium, and nuclear power plants in South Korea release twice as much tritium into the ocean.
By the way, France is the most released.
Does your country have nuclear power? How is tritium handled?

Many countries with nuclear power plants emit tritiated water. Among these countries, Japan pays the most attention to safety and processes waste before releasing it into the ocean.
How many of the people commenting here have actually investigated what tritiated water is released into the ocean as a result of nuclear power generation? And how many people know the total amount of tritium? Why are we only criticizing Japan when other countries are also emitting similar substances?
Are you aware of the fact that countries such as China and South Korea release waste into the ocean without any treatment?
    Tritium exists everywhere in nature.
However, most of them are at a level that does not affect the human body. The materials that Japan releases into the ocean have been treated to the extent that they do not have any negative effects on the human body or living systems. France and China emit far more tritiated water than Japan.

  • @leeo268
    @leeo268 Год назад +45

Tritium can be separated from water. There are a number of methods that can be used, including:
Water distillation: This method relies on the fact that tritium has a slightly higher vapor pressure than regular hydrogen. This means that when water is distilled, the tritium will be concentrated in the vapor phase, which can then be condensed and collected.
Ion exchange: This method uses a resin that has a strong affinity for tritium. When the water is passed through the resin, the tritium will be exchanged for the hydrogen atoms in the resin.
Electrolysis: This method uses an electric current to separate the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water. The tritium atoms will be preferentially deposited on a cathode, where they can be collected.
The choice of method will depend on the specific application and the concentration of tritium in the water. For example, water distillation is a relatively simple and inexpensive method, but it is not as effective at removing low levels of tritium. Ion exchange and electrolysis are more effective, but they are also more expensive.

There is always around 3400 grams of naturally occurring tritium in the earth‘s atmosphere as it is constantly being produced by cosmic radiation interacting with the upper atmosphere. Most of those 3400 grams are in the earth‘s oceans. The water in Fukushima only contains 2-3 grams of tritium so releasing it all at once would have no measurable impact. The reason why they are only going to release 0.1-0.2 grams of tritium per year at Fukushima is that the regulatory limits for radioactive releases from the plant are still the same as they were before the accident. So Fukushima isn‘t actually allowed to release more tritium in 2023 than it did when it was a normally operating nuclear plant.
