Funny. Knew someone who drank those. Tried steel, just nasty. To me tasted like rotten old fortified beer. I stuck to the PBR and Milwaukees Best. Probably worked out to be the same cost per abv but to this day PBR and Schlitz still in my routine. Best not so much.
OE on the East Coast is 5.6%. Panama City Beach circa 1981. 6'1 180 poind dual-sport college athlete. I shotgunned 6, 16 oz Bulls. I don't recall the rest of the evening.
In my youth, we drank Mickey's and we all swore that the wide mouth got you drunker quicker as it allowed more oxygen to be swallowed with the beer. Not once did we ever think that drinking beer out of a pint glass would really get you hammered....... thankfully none of us grew up to become scientists. In retrospect, it was the 5.6 ABV that did the job.
Milwaukee's best ice. Old E in the 40 bottle at 7.5% and the 211 in the 40 with the black label and red logo. Haha. Glass bottles. Budweiser ice was pretty good as well.
Used to drink Steel Reserve a lot years ago but I cant handle it anymore. The hangovers are mercilessly brutal. IMO Mickeys and Colt are the best of these "selections." King Cobra should be in the running though.
I remember the first time I had a steel reserve. I finished off the can and got up to throw it away when it all hit me at once , I tripped over my feet and almost fell into the trash can 😂😂. I then went to bed and waited for the room to stop spinning
OE is my go to malt liquor. I like craft beer, but I've always had a soft spot for malt liquor. I like the body and sweetness, but I've always thought it's nicely balanced.
The Steel Reserve was the worst I've ever had i believe. I found the Natty Daddy to be my secret fave. Just the Tall Boys, not the 16oz. There is a difference.

Camo malt liquor is the worst ever, trust me 🤮🤮🤮. I used to drink on a daily basis and I couldn't even drink it lol, I poured it out. My favorite used to be olde English HIgh gravity 800 but they stopped making it I guess.
In our high school yearbook, some of the jocks got the "800 club" listed in their bio as an "activity". Somehow the yearbook advisers didn't know they meant "Old English 800" club !!
I remember carrying a full case of old English on my handlebars of my bike to bring to the party in high school! I also remember buying Steel Reserve with my last 2 bucks when I was broke. These Beers serve their purpose in life!
I’m pretty sure I’d had Steel Reserve twice in my younger days. Once in the back seat of a car in the liquor store parking lot we got it from and another time in a cemetery at night with friends haha. So yeah they do…. - Craig
First time I drank steel reserve was 40oz when the coolest Mexi every would buy them for me at 18 after work if I gave him a ride home. He was always walking around the factory saying " fock it, like a dirty bucket" lol miss him. Another time my buddy drank to many natty ices and we had to hand cuff him under a toilet because he was trying to fight everyone. He ended up ripping the toilet out with his cuffs on, broke all the porcelain, water everywhere. We just shut off the water and said fuxk it let him party. He passed out soon after. Good dude
OE… Mickeys….. and if you fell on really hard times King Cobra. I’ll still drink Mickey’s and OE from time to time. King Cobra was absolutely brutal, but it definitely got the job done!
Double Take movie Daryl Chase : How you supposed to run a successful business, you ain't got no Schlitz Malt Liquor! You ain't representin'! You ain't keepin' it real!
The only one I ever tried was the Colt 45 and that was a loooong time ago. Probably when I was in college in the 80s and I really don't remember much about it. The only malt liquor I ever drank sort of regularly was Molson XXX and even that was at least 20 years ago. I think I first bought it in a duty free shop coming back to the US from Montreal.
Man, maybe it's having drunk 1 too many in my younger days, but I still like Steel Reserve and think that you need the maltiness and sweetness to balance out the alcohol... And I might be hallucinating but it reminds me a bit of Lexington's Bourbon Barrel ale
These malt liquors bring me back to poorer college times. I would never drink it out of a 2x4 but that seems reasonable because you probably wont want to finish them. Interesting you had the stronger regular beers in there too. The Mickey's Hand Grenade was always my favorite but it was a little more expensive than something like old english, steel reserve, or King Cobra. Good rankings overall though. Hopefully these don't cause too many problems in the morning 😅
St Ides is also a noteworthy malt liquor, especially due to its ties with early hip-hop. That story is a complicated beast in its own right. I think the rights were sold to another brewer who actually still produces it. It’s very difficult to find though.
I used to love those Mickey's GRENADES back in the 90s
i'm glad good old steel reserve made an appearance
Steel Reserve was my go to in college for getting drunk cheap, without dipping into hard alcohol. Fond memories

Old English was decent though
Those wide-mouth Mickeys bottles will get ye grunker'n hey-ull.

Good tasting pale lagers for me top out around 5.6%, think Festbier or Dortmunder Export Lagers.

Those little grenades are awesome
Mickey grenades!!!....reminds me of High School parties

tough tasting, you made the best of it!
Haha yes indeed, thanks🍻
OE is my go to malt liquor. I like craft beer, but I've always had a soft spot for malt liquor. I like the body and sweetness, but I've always thought it's nicely balanced.
steel reserve is rough, I couldnt even imagine the bull lmao
ahh yes, old english and steel reserve. Fond memories I hardly remember.
😂
Malt liquor rules!
OE is great. Tastes like a decent beer and it gets you where you wanna go for cheap.
The Steel Reserve was the worst I've ever had i believe. I found the Natty Daddy to be my secret fave. Just the Tall Boys, not the 16oz. There is a difference.
Tall boy is 16oz

Craft malt liquor is a new thing. Pretty good as well.
Matchless brewing old Tumwater.
Steeplejack brewing is pretty good as well.
Ahhh interesting, we’ll have to look out for those. I know Dogfish Head puts one out every now and then.
I never like Steel or OE very much... but the more you drank, the less it bothered you.
Natty Daddy is good. And anyone who thinks otherwise has issues. Well, beer-wise, that is.
It was a surprise
211

Arhhhhhhh matey ... you guys are limp wrist beer drinkers...Is that your Dad ?
Yep, father and son.
You guys deserve an award for trying those beers so I don't have to. Thanks!
😂😂
All I drank was malt liquor in the early 90’s when I first started drinking… Old E Colt 45 Private Stock were my favs
YEAST IS THE CULPRIT as far as aftertaste goes, along with hangover fuel.
In our high school yearbook, some of the jocks got the "800 club" listed in their bio as an "activity". Somehow the yearbook advisers didn't know they meant "Old English 800" club !!
I still drink a mickeys big mouth every once in a while
I remember carrying a full case of old English on my handlebars of my bike to bring to the party in high school! I also remember buying Steel Reserve with my last 2 bucks when I was broke. These Beers serve their purpose in life!

I haven't drank malt liquor since highschool but the best ones IMO were Old English & Colt .45
Tried colt 45.... oh my god that was horrible

😂😂 OMFG that story. Classic!
OE… Mickeys….. and if you fell on really hard times King Cobra. I’ll still drink Mickey’s and OE from time to time. King Cobra was absolutely brutal, but it definitely got the job done!
Brutal indeed. King Cobra was the worst of the ones I tried back in the day. I called it “King Condom” because of the smell haha. - Craig
Double Take movie Daryl Chase : How you supposed to run a successful business, you ain't got no Schlitz Malt Liquor! You ain't representin'! You ain't keepin' it real!
I accidentally bought a Natty Daddy once , I thought Natural light had changed their cans , OMG it was BAD!!!
That is quite an unpleasant surprise hahaha.
0:57 I’ve always said “druncle” just because it sounds funnier that way.

In Quebec colt 45 is 8%
wow
According to ChatGPT: Old English 800 Malt Liquor typically has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of around 5.9%.
That checks out based on the taste test. Thanks!
I also remember drinking Bud Malt and Miller Malt in the early 70s.
I’m not a beer drinker anymore but the Natty Daddy brought a smile to my face. Appreciate the video 🥃
Silver thunder laser and cobra were my go to malt liquor only in 40 oz versions though
I’d love to see you two play Edward 40 Hands.
🤣
you missed King Cobra!
I saw your Hi Wire glass - are y'all in NC?
New subscriber here from BRANTFORD Ontario. Cheers
Welcome, glad to have you following along! Cheers 🍻
U need some St Ides
Man, maybe it's having drunk 1 too many in my younger days, but I still like Steel Reserve and think that you need the maltiness and sweetness to balance out the alcohol... And I might be hallucinating but it reminds me a bit of Lexington's Bourbon Barrel ale
Hmm, not so sure about that Lexington comparison. It's been a long time since I've had one though. Cheers🍻
@@drinkingwithcraigandroger4539 I have been prone to the occasional hallucination :)
Cheers!
@@drinkingwithcraigandroger4539 and as always, thanks for doing the comparison... Always informative *and* entertaining :)
😂
It’s always fun. Thanks for watching.
The bad beers make you appreciate the good ones 😋
You’re totally right about that haha
I still like an Ole E now and then...just for a hoot...but like two tall cans is about all I can do these days
That'll get you somewhere haha.
Old English was my go to in my early 20's. It was cheap and it got you drunk.
Yep, that's checks out. Really pretty decent.
The bull hits hard but yeah it has like a sweet diapery finish that sticks around
🤣 well put
I have tried each of these variants.
Which one do you think is the best of the bunch?
I think Mickey's Fine Malt Liquor is the best of that batch. @@drinkingwithcraigandroger4539
I hear Canadians still get to enjoy OE fortys in the glass
Went to the liquor store today and it was in glass in NJ. Looks like they are making a comeback.
Mix that OE with some orange juice 🤫😎
😮
Oh dear lord. I feel for you guys......
🤣
