Hi Sara, torch firing can be done, but Sunshine Enamels need to be torch fired VERY carefully as they will disappear with too high of heat. Hope this helps!
Rather than etching, I'm wondering if just firing the undercoat to a grainy orange peel stage would be rough enough to take the graphite. Has anyone tried that? After watching this, I bought the set of Sunshine enamels. They are comparably very expensive, but they should last for a while. I know graphite is numbered by hardness. What number did you use here? I love that you teach techniques so clearly. Thank you.
Hi Barbara, we reached out to Jan personally with your question and she replied: The underfiring or doing what we call a sugar coat will be pretty good for drawing with graphite. The finer the grains are , the more delicate your drawing will be. The etching gives the smoothest of the matte surfaces. I LOVE my Sunshine colors- they should last you a lifetime. Cool Tools was nice enough to carry this set when I wanted to show it. If you had to order a set , they come in 2 oz quantities and it would cost a lot and you would never use them up. One of my friends, Anne Havel, does a lot with graphite and she uses a regular #2 pencil -the yellow school pencils. I also like the mechanical. I am teaching a few Zoom workshops for Pocosin Art Center-check it out.
Hi Silene, Sunshine Enamels can be torch fired but VERY carefully as they will disappear with too high of heat. I know that you have commented on another video regarding not having a kiln. If you are interested, we do have kilns in stock and ready to ship. We recommend the Kingpin 88 with a window for enameling. You can find it here: www.cooltools.us/Evenheat-Kingpin-88-p/kln-971-p.htm
I also double rinse my brush and my piece with baking soda so that I neutralize the acid. Once I have scraped off the etchant, I put the piece in a plastic tup with baking soda and a little water, so it is a slurry, Using gloves and a scrubbie, clean your piece in the slurry (you will see it foam at first as the acid is neutralized by the baking soda base). PLEASE be careful, and also dispose of your slurry carefully afterwards. Acid Etch can give serious chemical burns.
Hi Jan, How resiliant are the Sunshine colors? i.e. if I needed to transport a piece somewhere to get to a kiln, would it scrape off too easily to transport? Thanks
Hi Carol, the sunshine colors should transport successfully as long as you are very careful to not let anything touch them. Please note that sunshine enamels are to be painted over pieces that have already been enameled. If you need to transport a piece that you are enameling, this will not transport well. I hope this helps, feel free to reach out to us at sales@cooltools.us or 888.478.5060. We are happy to help!

Interesting video. I usually use Japanese lead-bearing enamels. Do you think I can paint over it with sunshine? Can I put a lead-bearing flux on top of the sunshine?
Hi Dordi, you can use sunshine enamels overtop lead-bearing enamels and use a lead bearing flux overtop the sunshine. You probably want to make a little test tile of the sunshine colors that you plan on using over the undercoat and under the flux to check on how the colors fire in relation to the undercoat and top flux coat. Also, sunshine enamels don't require a flux overtop - but one can be added if the artist desires. The sunshine would have to be fired into the previous layer of enamel before adding the flux overtop if they decide to. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching.

I have been taught to use baking soda solution rinse to neutralize any acid that may be in tiny scratches or pores. would this be applicable in this procedure? I am researching now, hoping to start working with enamel soon.
Hi Lily, can you elaborate? Jan does not use acid in this video so I'm not sure what you are referring to. We're happy to help if you can explain more!
Hi Diana, we asked Jan this for you and she replied, "It is a copper sheet with the corners cut out at 90 degree angles and edges bent down. I make them myself!" Hope this helps!
Very cool! Thanks so much for the answer! Can you also ask her what she does with them? I guess they'd be very cool as little pieces of art! You could hang them on the wall, stand them up....maybe a collection of them! Thanks again! Love this idea! @@cooltoolsvideos

Hi - thank you for your great videos. I am getting very distracted during your videos with a seriously irritating 'tocking' sound in the background - is it a clock that has lost its 'tick?? It is probably just me, but I find it genuinely annoying. What I have watched so far are absolutely excellent and thank you agin.
Hi John, this ticking you hear is the kiln running in the background. Jan's pieces are firing, and the kiln ticks as it is controlling the temperature. Thanks for watching.
I enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you...I'm so excited to try them!
Very insightful. Thank you

I'm really curious to know when & by whom was the graphite on enamel technique developed! If anyone knows, that would be great!
Hard graphite usually is a lighter color than soft graphite, but you are saying the opposite happens with this technique?
When we use etching for glass we use popsicle sticks and scrape off to reuse so you don't waste so much.
great idea
