This film takes us on a journey along seven of the remotest and most
untamed waters of Africa, where the delicate balance between life and
death plays out on the riverbanks. Harsh seasonal cycles dictate the fate
of the creatures in this changing environment where the survival of the
fittest is not just a saying but a brutal reality.
With cunning and opportunistic hunters of all sizes lurking in the waters or
prowling the banks, Africa's rivers are a predator's paradise. Clawless
otters and fishing spiders roam the clear shallows of the lush Okavango
delta while the legendary tigerfish, with its shark-like teeth, is a master of
ambush in the deeper water. Further north in Tanzania, the Rufiji river
becomes a death trap in the dry season as buffalo become stuck in the
mud, making them easy prey for hungry lions as the waters recede.
Servals and cheetahs are masters of stealth, hunting along South Africa’s
Sand river while the huge crocodiles on the Mara lie in wait for thousands
of wildebeest which need to cross the water to reach the green pastures
on the other side. This spectacular annual bloodbath is not for the
faint-hearted and it literally turns the river red with blood.
Daily life along these rivers is a high-stakes game where only the most
cunning and adaptable will emerge victorious. Climate change and
unpredictable weather patterns have forced many species to evolve and
adapt their survival and hunting strategies to confront the new
environmental realities.
