The art style and how everything is simple and cute is because that would be best represent how a child would see the world, it would also explain the looks of boy and girl. Boy and girl could be how young bf sees his parents and also uses that to try to fight his fear or truama (lemon monster or demon could be a representation of either one), it also shows us that bfs parents have a scarier side to them. They start off looking like a typical depiction of a sleep paralysis demon, they can disappear/reappear/shapeshift/redo events seemingly at will, they chase away the monster under the bed (or above the shelf, in this case), and their entire purpose seems to be getting BF to sleep (first serenading him, then helping to burn off his excess energy). Even the mod's title is "Twinsomnia", relating specifically to sleep and insomnia. Honestly, even if that isn't the real story behind them, I like the idea of it anyway~ ^^
