In this episode, I started using LBL for setting the clay base for the new shop and got frustrated enough with the strong arm steering, I decided to swap out the existing power steering pump and steering box as it has been leaking something terrible since the day I bought it. The swap was pretty straightforward, however, the end result wasn’t what I was expecting…
Enjoy watching the "little by little" progress of this Peterbilt 359 project that's nearing completion and the next #ProjectSnowman, a Kenworth W900A tribute truck to the one used in Smokey and the Bandit and the one after that a 1979 Kenworth K100 cabover that I’m planning to build up like the one used in the trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.

those original hear box bolts may have been "locking swedge nuts". on time use as the very end of the nut damages the threads as they were tightened. when i need a bolt to stay in place like that one for the gear box, i put it in the hole and then slide an o ring on the other side to hold it from falling out. once i have whatever it is mounted, i just cut the o ring. i would do 2 checks for the power steering. 1) disconnect the pitman arm from the box. jack up both sides of the front axle to get tires off the ground. try to manually turn the wheels side to side. checking to see if king pins are siezed. 2) with the truck running i would crack the pressure line at the gear box to see if it is pumping. then crack the return to see if it is returning.

      Dear J.C. SMITH
👍👌👏 Really nice to meet you here. I bet that your professional suggestions are able to help Mark P.. Because of the little bit resistance while steering, I also guessed that something mechanical is kind of seized a bit. I really hope he will find out what hinders him to have fun with the steering.
      2) This beautiful truck still has no brakes on the front axle. Maybe you have something used that fits in your storage? Maybe even something that M. P. can afford to buy? ;-)
Best regards, luck and health to all of you.

Ok mark, here you go, all your fans wrote in what to try to do and I Made a list,
1st take the truck for a drive and make a lot of turns to try to purge any air from system.
    2. Try filter change for that system.
3 check for clog or clasped hose.
    4. Jack front of truck and turn wheel see if turns easier.
5 check king pins/ what ever that is/
I am an aircraft mechanic not truck a mech.
    6. Check for frozen steering knuckle any thing in steering linkage.
7.try installing a psi gauge in to system should be 2000 to 2500 psi. I think.
    8. Might be a bad part out of stock, don’t know how many times that but me in the ass working on 40 year old Aircraft. Like DC10-30.

    • @longliner205a4

You can actually get trailers for free or almost free especially vintage trailers. In the 70's 45' trailers were the norm since it was the legal length limit. Where I live in southern California there is old trailers parked in backyard all over the place some being used for storage. My friend bought a property with 7 vintage trailers in the backyard and he wanted them gone so I hauled them all away. They were in descent shape just needed tires and to go through through the air system and electrical. I hauled them out of there on my lowboy and ended up cutting them up for scrap.

Hell no you can go and use the truck to help pack it down and it's a great excuse to drive Little By Little. No power steering bring you back to the days of the old Armstrong steering. As for the pump problems I would check the drive gear, could be its worn and not turning, next thing is you could have a bad hose, if the hose is plugged nothing will get thru and some of the old hoses look good on the outside but inside they get sucks in tight from too much pressure and it creates a jam other thing to look into if all that fails is to see if the pump shop switched something around incorrectly, kind of along shot they are usually pretty bang on things over st Hydra Steer but it's always possible. Talk about the parts gods smiling down on the project what are the chances that a pump could be on the shelf? Gotta love that.
Lol at the Jack Daniels spot moment, they ought to sponsor you,you are a faithful fan of their product after cold or hard days. Hey your there why not give her a shot of the black paint and make her blend with the rest of the truck, got to keep her looking sharp
One trick I use when I get parts that are heavy as hell and you dont want to kill your back is you can use some of the slider motorcycle straps to raise or lower things to the ground,it's like a little chain fall for small areas and tight spots
I am sure you will get the pump issues resolved and we will find out what happened on the next video, hope its something simple keep up the good work!

I'm sure by the time you read this the power steering issue has been resolved. I have to agree with one other guy, a plug in the system or a bad supply line. Here one for you! My dad was working on a friend's car, and it would ideal fine, but everything you would give it throttle it would starve for gas. The problem turned out to be the short flex line to the fuel pump had gone bad inside and acted like a flapper valve inside the flex line. So maybe its one in the same, a bad hydraulic line. I love your enthusiasm and the fact you like the older truck! I like your choices in what looks good and what doesn't. And I must say You know your trucks!!! Keep up the great work and video. • @RipRoaringGarage

I would recommend this. Reconnect the steering and align it (you didnt have to remove it to bleed). Jack the front axle and ensure that the jacks are nowhere near the tires because you will be swinging them back and forth (left to right). With the engine started, cycle the steering back and forth at least three times with the bleed valve open (on the steering box. It will have a bleed port, that you connect to a hose, like on hydraulic brakes).
I can bet you that air was trapped around the gear and balls of the steering box. Once you start getting steering, close the bleed valve, then let it run for about 10 minutes, then repeat (to get the air from the return line out, as those bubbles will cause skipping steering).
    Hope it works out.

  • @davefontes8532
    @davefontes8532 3 года назад +3

I would suggest disconnecting the lines at the steering box, and connecting them together. Then take the return line off of the reservoir, and put it back into the fill hole. This will establish a complete loop you can see. Then you need to confirm what is the pressure and return fittings on the steering box. I would also changing your return filter. Also when working with a "clamp fit" of the pitman arm, if you tap a thin wedge in the split line, it will open it up enough to slide off. Don't go overboard, just enough to loosen it.

I'd be willing to bet one of the hoses is collapsing internally. You see it quite a bit in the soft brake lines, but it isn't out of the realm to have a p.s. hose suck itself shut. If those hoses are original, (which they probably are,) I'd say there is a good chance. Crack each fitting loose one at a time to verify the ATF is making it's way through all the hoses. That should eliminate the possibility of a bad hose. Please let us know what you come up with on this man. It was a nice change to see you wrenching on LBL, but I need more Snowman!!! Can't wait for the next one! Take care!👍😎

Did you check the fluid color after you ran the new steer gear stop to stop? If it is light pink and frothy looking you have air in the system. Best practice is to not start the engine. Jack the front end and support. Once the air in the fluid has dissipated run the steer gear full stop to stop 10+ times. This should allow any trapped air to "burp". Keep checking the fluid color. Light pink indicates air. Keep running the steer gear lock to lock with engine off until fluid color is solid red. Only once the fluid color looks the same as when you put it in should you run the engine and allow pump pressure to come in. This should still be done before any weight is applied to the steering system. I bet you are fighting trapped air. Keep up the excellent work and love for the forgotten sir!

That little snag you feel is probably the needle bearings in steering shaft u joints and you can jack up the front end and turn you steering without disconnecting the steering

Also forgot, check out fsc speed shop. He’s having a great time too.
Had to rebuild his transmission and clutch.
But at least he is indoors.
Wow Does that make a difference.

Maybe that bit of flat steel? you found behind the steering box was the remains of another set of vise grips from years ago !

I'd check the hoses too, as others have said. Although you can't see any evidence on the outside, the inside of the hose can collapse and prevent flow. You could look into the reservoir when the engine is running, you can usually see swirls in the fluid as it returns to the tank, it might be that you are only getting a trickle instead of full flow.

Have you tried cranking it lock to lock with the engine off and the tank cap off? I blead my dakota's system that way, maybe big trucks are different.

Twinstick. Did you check or replace the hoses? It is very possible to have a internal blockage by a chunk of cracked hose. GM had this issue back in mid 90's. Basically a internal kink. Just because you have pressure, dose not mean you have correct flow.

  • @kenmurray4232

Check for blockages or restrictions in the lines both directions. Also looked like a filter top rear of the engine connected to the system. Just my thought for you. Great video. Minty

A "T" and a pressure gauge come to mind. The linkage between the steering wheel and the steering box seems specious, that much "play in the wheel" seems to be non-hydraulics in nature. Ron W4BIN

Once upon a time a long time ago, I heard a phrase used, "road feel steering".. Yeah I know, well the principal was at roadway or highway speed the pump would unload excess pressure to allow the driver to "feel the road" in the steering. Then at lower speeds the pump would provide assistance for manoeuvring and steering basically "assist" but not be completely powered. I can't remember what series trucks came out with that system, but it was one of those "added features" that everyone and their dog threw onto the trucks they manufactured as a sales point. Chances could be high that your truck has the "road sense" or "road feel" steering package. So what you have right now is what your going to get at the end of the day with that steering box and pump setup (if that's the case).. Hope that helps you out a bit Mark, Stay Safe & Thanks for the share! Cheers

I had hose that looked perfectly normal on the outside but the interior had decayed and collapsed on the inside and nothing was getting through it. It wasn't a power steering hose but a brake hose, maybe that is the issue. It was scary coming up to a stop light because all of a sudden the right wheel was locking up and the left wheel just kept rolling! Just check the lines. Hope the pump doesn't get burned up running dry! Anyway you could remove a hose and fill the pump and the steering box? Good luck.

I think there is something wrong with that pump you got. Especially if they said they had to reverse the direction? I changed my 1981 Pete from manual to power steering and after I got the new box and pump on it worked like a charm,. Can turn the wheel with one finger. As for the steering gear, when the worm gear is shimmed to match the lash on the pitman gear correctly it shouldn't drag or be too loose. Sounds like the lash is too tight.

On that psa you mentioned with batteries I put a power cutout switch in all my vehicles so that I can just flip a switch and I know nothing is live, if you did that to all your project trucks it be easier and less wear on your battery terminals plus just faster when doing electrical and testing too.

If it was in my shop, I would check the u-joints in the steering shaft. Then I'd put it on jack stands and try working the air out by steadily turning the wheel left and right. Also, would check the king pins at this point. Not sure if that type of reservoir would have a serviceable filter, but I'd check for that. Then all that would be left is replacing the power steering lines. Could be collapsed internally.

It's possible that there is a filter for the power steering system that's clogged. I had something similar with a K100.

I replaced my gear box a number of years ago. I got it from a rebuild shop. I also had a slight resistance when I turned just slightly to the right. I took it back and the mechanic made a slight adjustment and it worked fine (still does). I saw what he did and asked if it is still not right, can I try to adjust it? He said " no, just bring it back, I've been doing this for 35 years, I just know how it is supposed to feel". I don't know what he did but obviously he know what he was doing.

Are you sure it’s the box ? It could be binding someplace else like your kings or a knuckle, I guess I’d jack it up and see if it’s free or binding before I spent anymore money ! And check the hose flow , maybe there’s an obstruction in the line . I would think the new parts are bad so it has to be on the old parts ! Just a thought !

It’s normal to have a little bit of a hard spot in the steering box, it’s the centre of travel, and you have to overcome it to steer from one side to the other. It helps to keep the truck going straight, this is what I was taught when learning to overhaul steering boxes. Also trying to drive a wedge into the slot helps to remove the arm from the steering box. Phone Hydra Steer and ask them what could be wrong before pulling the box off the truck as it’s awkward and heavy. Inside the frame is usually greasy and dirty, only exception I ever saw was Les Steils, you could work on his truck and never seemed to get dirty, He always said if I’m going to have to crawl under it to grease it I’m going to make sure there is no dirt or grease anywhere on his inside frame rails etc. Miss the good old days as I’m retired, still work on NT 855 Cummins Engines, not many people know much about them anymore. Good Luck my friend I’m sure you’ll figure it out, enjoy your videos.

Might work, I get the front wheels off the ground, remove the power steering reservoir cap ,ignition to run so the wheel moves freely, turn the wheel back and forth lock to lock a few times. Check the level. Then turn on the engine and turn lock to lock again with the cap off and check the level occasionally.
