    Thank you for addressing this! I always wondered how other artists were able to fill up sketchbook after sketchbook, and thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks for reminding me that everyone has different approaches to creating, and there ain't no one "right" way :D

    I can relate to this!!! I have tons of sketchbooks but never use them. I save them to draw “pretty” art but as I go I never liked my drawings in my sketchbook. I use random paper and I feel like I draw better on them 😅

      There's def something magic about not feeling the pressure to make perfect work!

      Yesss. The pressure to be perfect in a sketchbook is just too strong for me.

    Oh. My. God. I thought I was the only one 😮 . After all these not even half filled sketchbooks lying around (only one entirely filled from back in my art school days), feeling like a failed artist who can't even doodle, there's nothing wrong with me after all?! 😀

    Thank you for bringing up this topic! It's so refreshing to hear a different opinion when it seems like everyone is preaching that you absolutely have to cary a sketchbook around and use it all the time if you want to progress. I do use a sketchbook regularly, but I've never been able to get any learning out of doing random drawings when I'm out and about. At one point I even felt like I wasn't a "real" artist if I didn't have a sketchbook filled with wonderful sketches drawn on location that I could present to anyone at any moment. Thankfully, this feeling didn't last :D

    I’ve always felt like such a bad artist for not using a sketchbook!!! They just don’t work for me. I like drawing on loose paper and I never seemed to keep up with bound sketchbooks (kinda like how I’ve never been able to keep up with a journal even though I’m also a writer!!)

    Thank you so much for addressing my personal 'elephant in the room'. I find, because I work on several projects at a time, that sketch book time does not eventuate. At least I don't need to feel like I am failing as an illustrator because I don't use my sketch book. Thank for an terrific video, Kendyll. :)

  • @moriahdawnart4133

    Kendyll, I’ve found that I’m very much the same way. I’ve never been able to fill a sketchbook completely, nor have I been one to do quick sketches. I always put a lot of time into my sketches. It could be because I like things to look “complete” - and that’s what gives me satisfaction out of my work. And I think you’re right, there’s no right or wrong way to practice - as long as you’re continually working on your art, that’s what matters and that is what is going to help you improve. Great video ❤️

    I’m so with you on this. I have tons and I mean tons of sketchbooks that I’ve never touched. A few I have a couple drawings in even but I have never really gotten into them. I realized that like you I spend lots of time on my art and my ideas are are just the beginning. I now have pieces of watercolor paper taped up and ready for use and can pull them out sketch my ideas and such on them and the days when I’m in the studio and not working on a specific project I can go through the stack and pick one to start. I have joined an urban sketch group and have a backpack with sketchbooks in it for that but I am reasonably sure I’ll never be the classic artist with tons of filled sketchbooks. I also like you am now ok with this and no longer wondering what’s wrong with me or am I a real artist because of this. Thank you for sharing and making it feel ok.

    I see my friends "sketch books" and always feel so sad that their beautiful work is trapped in there. Thank you for this very helpful perspective ! Many years later.

    I love this topic! I grew up never using sketchbooks, I didn't understand the idea of using paper for something that wasn't a finished piece. Even in school, I only had one class that required it, and I found it really hard to keep up with the daily drawings because I thought it meant daily finished pieces. As an adult, I've tried extremely hard to get into using sketch books as a way to play and experiment (something I've never really done). I love art, I've drawn literally my entire life, but it wasn't until I was an adult I learned the value in just having fun with supplies. I still don't have the prettiest sketchbook, it's a lot of swatches and things, but I appreciate that it has opened my eyes to playing with supplies without guilt (even if that means I'll never have a flip-through worthy sketchbook).

      That's so great -- thank you for sharing. I've loved getting to hear from more folks who weren't typical sketchbook users. It's super encouraging. I like the way you're thinking about it too -- like an experiment/swatch book. I might even be able to do that myself!😅💕

    Thank you, thank you, thank you Kendyll! You took the words out of my mouth. I was already kind of feeling guilty for not having a "sketchbook time" or going back and forth to an unfinished work instead of creating new ones in one go. Learning so much from you, gaining confidence in myself, and somehow making things clearer. Love your work! 👏🏻

    I'm the same way with sketchbooks! I've never been much of a sketcher. I will do a thumbnail sketch, then go straight into a final piece. I wish I had better sketching skills, but I guess I've never really been interested in sketches. 💁 What I usually do is just right down a list of ideas as they come to me. I have lots of "To Draw" lists. 😂

    Kudos to you Kendyll! I embraced the sketchbook in art school also but in recent years I have been bothered by the piling up of random books with random sketches and devised my own way to "collect creativity". I am SO SO GLAD to see your confession in this video. I feel so much better. Thank you! Each person needs to do what works for their own creative process and I love that you encourage this.

    Thank you thank you thank you!!!
    For the longest time I thought I was broken because of my inability to do anything with a sketchbook. I envy those people that can fill out sketchbooks. But when I approach one everything falls apart. It may also be because I never really drew growing up and didn't take a drawing class until I was 33. I've found that if I could carry around an 18 X 24 pad of newsprint I may be more ready to sit down and sketch out. But who can do that. Thank you again for helping me feel a little less weird as an artist who doesn't use a sketchbook.

    it was wonderful to hear you talk through this! i've always struggled with keeping a sketchbook, and the only time i was successful was when i treated each page as a full blown art piece or collage... which defeats the purpose of the sketchbook. i've definitely felt the same feelings of "i'm not a true artist" or "there's something missing in my skill or practice" because of this. hearing you speak about this was really helpful for me, and it's just nice to know there are other ways to go about creating. :)

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  6 лет назад

      Thank you, Nancy! What a sweet comment. I really appreciate hearing that you've dealt with some of the same things. I think that's a big part of leading a creative life or working in a creative vocation -- recognizing that the most important thing is making the work, and not caring so much about whether it's done the "right" way or not. Thanks for sharing!💕

    I really love this topic and I believe that it's important for everyone to find their own ways to release creativity and not to be frustrated about how you are supposed to approach that. I totally relate to what you said as I don't use a sketchbook, either. I have tried, though, and, at times, I have also felt odd about this. So, thank you, Kendyll, for your videos and for addressing these topics that often get in the way of enjoying and producing art.

      👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 So true! I think it's a major challenge, but just learning to embrace and dig into your own creative process (whatever that may be) is super important. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Miriam!

    I really loved hearing your thoughts on this! Over the years I have become a really, really big "sketchbooker", but this video was a really interesting perspective that you don't really hear very much of. It also reminds us that every artist works differently and there is no right way to be an artist (or any creative field period), so thank you so much for your video!

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  6 лет назад

      That's so interesting to hear! As I said, I may still become a sketchbooker in the future, so it's great to hear from someone else who has made the transition. Thanks for sharing your experience! :)

    I use my sketchbook mostly for swatch charts. I know if i go by the book (by the book, ahhh pun not intended!) I would be using my sketchbook, but I do photorealistic portraits mostly so I don't think my sketchbook is ultimately necessary for that. Lately I have been delving into more creative backgrounds, as well as some interesting compositions featuring the portrait, and I still don't use the sketchbook for it. I have been thinking I should be using it so I don't waste a lot of time on a composition that doesn't work, however I don't particularly enjoy the sketchbook planning process for a finished piece. It's not meant to be a joyful experience, I don't think, but I particularly can't stand it. So I totally relate on this subject!

    Thank god I found this, all the videos I've been watching always go "have a sketchbook" and show a bunch of sketchbooks they had over the years. That made me panic since my family isn't really supportive when it comes to my art therefore slow progress. Just look at my profile picture, for example, look at that. Awful. When I had a sketchbook, I would rip out pages when I don't like the drawing I made until it goes thin a very bad habit... Now, I am dealing with a small Veikk graphic tablet, and my frustration over the difficulty of drawing on it because the output comes out on the screen and it's difficult to handle adds to my pile of paranoia on my future on arts.

    Kendyll, I'm exactly the same and I've always felt somewhat inferior because I've never managed to throw myself into investing time in a sketchbook. I feel a little bit like a "fake artist" because every other artist seems to be using a sketchbook while I much prefer to create BIG, time-consuming pieces. I really appreciate your video talking about this and am glad to know I'm not alone.

  • @elifblanco

    Hey Kendyll. I really love the fact you talk about this. I totally relate. I've never finished a sketchbook. Some years ago I used to buy beautiful sketchbooks, and it was very exciting at first, so promising.. But as you said, I would only use the very first pages and that's it. That would make me feel kind of guilty. But it's been like a year ago that I've accepted the way I work :) I usually send a couple of sketches to my clients, and I use normal sheets of paper. It's just more comfortable if I need to trace the sketch again to add variations depending on the client's response.. Once we agree with the drawing, I start the painted version on the watercolor paper. And I don't need a sketchbook during the whole process :)

    I just started brainstorming in my sketch books barely any sketches haha. For school I'd always finish my assignment and after I'd make fake sketches that looked like they built up to the final thing lol

    Hi Kendyll! I love that you are able to speak with confidence about who you are as an artist and not allow yourself to feel shamed or something just because your style is different. Unfortunately I am at the veeeery early stages of learning how to think and speak respectfully of myself and my art and not kinda cower under comparison or criticism. I am not a professional artist and I did not go to art school, yet I am completely confident that God has given me the gift and the heart to make art for other's delight or encouragement. But that's where my confidence ends. Anyhow, I am learning a lot just by the way you are respectful of your own work, you are willing to examine yourself and the way you work, like this sketch book thing, and then (it seems) to be confident in your own skin. Thanks for being so honest with us! ❤️

      What a thoughtful comment! Thanks so much, Jennifer. Maybe I should do a video about confidence... what do you think? I hope you can continue on your journey!💕

    • @JenniferFortner76
      @JenniferFortner76 6 лет назад +1

      I would LOOOOOOOOVE for you to do a video about confidence! It's funny, about a year ago I started my own blog about art because I needed a way to force myself to talk about the highs and lows and also to share what I've made in order to get used to other people responding to my work. To learn to accept both criticism as well as compliments! I've only posted like three times! I think when we tie something so closely to our value as a human it gets difficult to be objective, don't you? But I'm learning! I'm growing! I'm trying!

    Other than for A level Art- where we had to have one, I've never had a sketchbook on the go either- and I've always felt a bit of a fraud because of this (and been told this by others too). This video has just given me such a boost - I always have a larger personal project on the go alongside commission work- and this is where my daily minutes or hours are spent... I thought this was somehow wrong- "how am I meant to develop if I'm not experimenting?" - but I realise now creating larger finished work helps develop skills just as much. Thank you!!

    I can agree with you, I usually don't complete a sketch book, I tend to take pages out to draw on them, but an artist journal - of sketches and writing notes and life events - I have completed. As a professional artist and instructor keeping a sketch book can also mean a stack of loose sheets to see the progress of drawings. Thanks for your videos, they are great!

    I only used sketch books art art school too and it looked more like a scrapbook, with boys phone numbers and shopping lists. One of my most precious things in my studio is a hand made sketch book given me by my daughter in law for christmas and I plan to fill it with flower illustrations to give to my mother for birthday (not saying which one) I will try not to put any boys phone numbers in it :D

    Same. I don’t know with a sketchbook there’s this hesitation my brain has to make it perfect. I find I am more confident when I have loose paper. Also I like to draw across the whole paper and sketchbooks have the bound in the middle which I hate.

    I know this is a really late comment but I used to be the same way when I was kid/early teen. The only reason I started using sketchbooks is because my parents would get mad at me for using all the printer paper. That and I saw the other "art kids" using sketchbooks in middle school. Even then I would still use loose paper and have a few big file folders with band closures stuffed with my old non-sketchbook work. I love sketchbooks now (not that I was opposed to them before) but I get they don't feel right to everyone.
