  • This video shows how we dehydrated snacks and meals for our backcountry canoe camping trip in Algonquin park. We love making our own meals - it's important to us to have simple, reliable meals that we know our kids will enjoy! Thanks for watching and Happy Camping!

    I'm not saying people should not be careful but I have been drying food for 25 + years and I have never rinsed my hamburger. I cook 93 % beef alone , in casseroles, spaghetti sauce, chili, seven layer, etc. Never a problem. I try to keep the meals in the freezer but in the last few years have not as we don't have room. I took 3 weeks of dryed meals that had not been stored in a freezer for 1.5 years and all were tasty and I suffered no discomfort. That stated it would be best to keep it in the freezer till your trip starts. I must state I don't go to the BW in the summer. Spring and fall when it is generally cooler. Thanks for this video, I enjoyed it.

      Thanks so much for watching and for your comment! Yes, I’ve often wondered if rinsing the meat actually helps, but we prefer to err on the side of caution, especially with kids. Keeping the meals in the freezer is a good idea though, if possible. Happy camping!!

    Backpacking chef is a great resource for dehydrating. You should check it out later. I’ve used his stuff exclusively for years and am thoroughly pleased.

    What lipton soup mix did you use. And did you cook it first. I have a very picker eater and we're going out for 10 days soon. I think that may an option for us. Thank you. And fyi loved the video it defiantly gave me some better ideas than I've had.

      Hi! So we cook up some ground beef and drain the fat. Once it's browned, we add roughly a cup of water, a package of the Lipton Chicken Soup mix, and a squirt of both ketchup and mustard, and then simmer it down till it thickens. So yes, the beef and noodles were fully cooked before dehydrating them. My picky eaters love it! Good luck and I'm so happy the video was helpful!

      Do you all sleep in the el capitan ?
      It's honestly the most bomb proof tent. The weight is meh, but wind and rain are no match. Thanks for the ideas!

    What is the ratio of lemon juice, water and honey please?

    • @CampingAcrossOntario
      @CampingAcrossOntario  2 года назад +1

      I don't have a proper ratio, sorry! I just squeeze as much as I can from one lemon and add some honey, then dip as much fruit as I can in the bowl. This year I added a generous amount of honey and the apples came out even more delicious!

    How long would the beef last dehydrated on trail without spoiling ?

    • @CampingAcrossOntario

      I'm honestly not sure. It's important to get as much fat off as possible. We have vacuum sealed our dehydrated food when we know we're not going to eat it right away, but usually I make it about a month before the trip.

      I brown it, rinse the fat off, dehydrate, cool, put in ziplock bag, then keep ours in the freezer until we go. Our trips are 8-14 days and I have never had a problem. No official knowledge about it.
