There are so many comments here talking about clowns being useless, scary, stupid... But that is not true, clown is a form of theatre and one of the purest. Clown, too, is art and the training behind it is much harder than just painting your face; you have to get full control of your body, voice, expressions and thoughts. You cannot be a dramatic actor/actress if you cannot step out of your human world and be extra mundane. Being a clown is being able to be present and in that manner, entertain people, make them laugh. That is the hardest and most Noble artistic profession I can possibly think of.
Clowning is well and alive however clown is dead thanks to serial killer John Wayne Gacy and the American culture that promotes such cynical depiction of clowns. Who knows, maybe a clown is due for an image rehab.
@@hankitytankity You are 100% right. Its movies and media who portrayed a bad clown image. a real true clown isnt scary. A clown is there to relief the audience from all the tension in the other acts. He enlarges emotions. He makes you sympathize with him, he puts a miror in front of you and shows all the emotions in the world and makes them bigger. Being funny is a VERY serious bussines and a hard one to. Because an act has to precise. If timing is a splitsecond of then it can be less funny. Or even not funny at all.
Freeeedom! That's what it's all about. And all the rest is either taught or taken away! Clowning is about being funny from the heart and soul, not acting as such... Loose it all, and then give what's left!
Clowns are always useful, friendly, smart, hilarious, and brilliant at making people laugh. Clown should remain a part of the theatre, whether in vaudeville, Broadway, or in circuses.
People have been telling me my whole life how funny I am. Now that I am starting my clown journey, I don't know how. I can't be funny when I try to think of skits and whatnot, but people laugh at me nearly everywhere I go
He's all talk and nothing substantial. Its al negative. But what does he teaches? He explains his philosophy and says its wrong, and no no no, and its bad. But does he give any examples of what is good and bad?? Nope. Does he give any solutions?? nope A real clownteacher will explain you about timing, about mimics, how to move and when. And how the timing affects the audience. And thats is why they laugh or not. Even a good joke can be killed. And a mediocre one can get laughs because of the way performed. But teaching like Gaulier doesnt gets you anywhere. He explains his philosophy and expects the student to get it without any explanation. If you dont get it your a bad student. He should point out what the student got: like you got good mimics: use this and make it beter. Or thats not your strong point: dont use it. He should develop the students tools. Clowning is after all a profession with rules and tricks of the trade. Yes theres also a philosophy behind it. But with only that you wont achieve it.
Personally, I think it's a waste of time and money. How can you have one guy dictate what is funny or not. The humor is in the eye of the beholder. If humor was universal, there wouldn't be so many genres of it. This guy is a clown and they're all clowns for believing him.
You’ve literally just stated what he has said multiple times throughout the video- that they are close when the audience is laughing. It’s tough for people to learn that, but you could basically do standup or systematically train on another audience
@Jimmy John that's interesting, I was contemplating that the other night looking at the difference between heath ledgers and Joaquíns make up. Heath actually did his own amateur clown make up and also Joaquíns was done without loud colours.
I see you made this comment four years ago but being a clown is a key part of theatre. You can't jump into a drama if you can't step out and make fun of yourself. Clown teaches you to leave all your worries aside and give people laughs by making a LOT of effort. You see, if you watch good clown routines, you'll notice these people need at least a year of body training to have full control of their movements. The clown is one of the purest and hardest forms of theatre because just like a Kings jester, it is meant to entertain with laughter.
You both are jackasses. Clown is an art form, politicians are bums. Don’t be such team playing sycophants. Enjoy the clowns bringing joy, disdain the bozos in DC

Laughter is the best medicine. Those who can make us laugh are healers. Noble profession indeed.
@@hankitytankity What if we can turn the tables around and change the perception of clowns for the better?
This is so fucking funny oh my god how is no one else seeing this is the comedy itself

this is like that episode of king of the hill where bobby becomes a clown and so unfunny...
Hank makes him realize that even prop comedy is better than this nonsense.

It's not one guy deciding. In the video, it's explained that he tries to express what he thinks the audience is feeling based on their own laughter.
You’ve literally just stated what he has said multiple times throughout the video- that they are close when the audience is laughing. It’s tough for people to learn that, but you could basically do standup or systematically train on another audience
@Jimmy John remember that scene from the joker? Where Joaquín phoenix explained that the audience dictates what's funny or not? Lol
